Already an enormous bestseller in Asia, with more than 3 million copies sold, The Courage to be Disliked demonstrates how to unlock the power within yourself to be the person you truly want to be.

Using the theories of Alfred Adler, one of the three giants of 19th century psychology alongside Freud and Jung, it follows an illuminating conversation between a philosopher and a young man. The philosopher explains to his pupil how each of us is able to determine our own lives, free of the shackles of past experiences, doubts and the expectations of others. It's a way of thinking that's deeply liberating, allowing us to develop the courage to change, and to ignore the limitations that we and those around us can place on ourselves.

Psychoanalytic approaches (that this book draws on) are now not in favour in Psychology as it is founded on ideas that can not be proven. That is, it's unscientific.

Adler was founder of the school of individual psychology. His emphasis on the importance of feelings of inferiority…

But it can give helpful insights.

The Courage to Be Disliked could also be looked at from a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach commonly used in Psychology.

In my past work, my successful clients often dealt with the fear & dilemma of not being liked. A senior public servant was given the job of making 600 staff redundant - he was a wonderful person, but very disliked!
When he became comfortable with he would not be liked, he became more liked.

The thoughts, beliefs, & desire to be liked often holds us back from success. It's a major form of control. But "risking" being truly ourselves usually results in being liked for who we are, not who we think we should be.

I downloaded the Ebook a couple of months back (for free from my local library service as any good ozbargainer would do). Personally, I didn't like it. I gave up about half way through which is unusual for me. I normally stick with it, looking for the value or at least be open to the ideas presented. I found the ideas a bit out there, but that wasn't the problem, I quite like to hear different ideas and approaches. My issues were the Q&A format which I thought was pretentious and irritating, and the volume of words. Why present an idea in two paragraphs when you can use 500 paragraphs of waffle instead. I accept that all the good stuff might have been in the second half that I didn't get to, but the first half could have been presented in a page and a half. I hope others have a better experience, but I wouldn't spend $4 on it. Free was about the right price.

It's similar to the approach taken in psychotherapy, philosophy, & some religions - a very long discourse.

Am just starting to listen to it. Possibly a better approach than reading a discourse.

The thoughts could have been distilled down for easy consumption.
But that's not in the tradition of this field. We have to work for it.
My guess is it would appeal more to those who have experienced psychotherapy.

      Here's a summary

  • Tell me about it, no one wants to hear the truth.

I got the audiobook on Audible and to be honest, its not that great. Yes its got some insightful discussions, but i would not spend money on this, the audiobook is also narrated by the most boring guy on earth.
