Hyundai Getz Back Firing around Corners - HELP

I have a mysterious car issue in my 2010 Hyundai Getz that I cannot figure out.

It has 117,000 km and mostly drives well. However sometimes, when it is warm and I have driven around a corner or round-about -
the car hesitates when I accelerate and makes a sound like chains rattling - and then blows out a plume of grey/black smoke.

I also cannot pin point where the sound is coming from. It could be from the engine or exhaust.

It only happens at low speed.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks !!!

Advice: Take it to a mechanic to diagnose before you get into an accident that injures yourself or innocent others. Could be anything from a simple leak issue to the engine disintegrating.

Pro Tip: Pick up car from mechanic within two years.

      • Wait for the invoice first !

        • Invoices to be sent to previous address, old email or former phone number only.

  • Sounds like the spark plugs are misfiring. Check the plugs and spark plug cables.

    • Thats exactly what I thought at first. I replaced the plugs and cables and the problem is still there.

Did you put them back on in the right order?

        • Everything replaced correctly, and the exact same problem remained.

      • I've experienced the chains rattling sound (sounded like marbles rolling around in my exhaust pipe) when the workshop replaced my spark plugs but damaged the spark plug cables. When the engine is under load, like when accelerating from low speed, the spark plugs would misfire. I still think the issue is with the ignition rather than fuel. Did the problem improved at all after replacing the spark plugs? Did you gap the new spark plugs correctly?

Found this which talked about issues from the oxygen sensor causing the misfiring.

Consider a visit to a mechanic to get the error code. It would help narrow down the problem.

        • Thanks - a very interesting thread. I'm thinking it could possibly be the oxygen sensor.

  • Have you refuelled your noz?

    • It's a stock standard unit.

  • Could be faulty fuel injectors, but your best bet would be to get a mechanic to do a diagnostic test to find out the exact problem.

    • Thanks. I've read the rattling sound may indicate injector probs.

    • Thanks !! You nailed it … the mechanic found the fuel injectors to be the issue

      • The biggest reason for fuel injector failure is low-grade fuel.

Guess all that money you saved up using E10 just went up in smoke , literally.

        Unlucky.

      • 16 months later… that was a quick resolution!

        • stayed with the mechanic a bit longer than anticipated.

    Stop going around corners…

Stop going around corners at low speed.

Get a subwoofer to drown it out.

That's thinking outside the square :)

  • Oil level?
    Blocked oil pickup?

    • I keep the oil topped up … but it is burning a little. Definitely a possibility.

Does this still happen when fuel tank full?

Black smoke is caused by an engine running rich. If it's only happening on acceleration then your ecu is dumping in fuel to go faster but the engine is being starved of air so check the air filter but it could also be an air flow sensor fault.
Rattling or knocking 'pinging' might be a timing issue which would make this an electrical/sensor fault. Take it to your mechanic.

    • Thanks. I'm guessing possibly an oxygen sensor. Will be heading to the mechanic soon.

Acceleration and chains rattling it sounds like pinging/knocking/detonation. Caused by poor quality fuel, bad spark plugs/leads, sticky/gummed injectors, carbon on pistons, blocked air filter or bad timing.

Black smoke is over fueling. Grey smoke could be a mixture of over fueling (black) and unburnt fuel (white). This, coupled with the “rattling” sound on acceleration could mean that you have combustion or fueling/ignition issues…

The grey smoke could also be black mixed with light blue smoke. This indicates burning oil. The engine may be worn, or if there is an inlet side blockage, (filter, collapsed intake pipe) Under heavy acceleration, the engine may be sucking air from anywhere it can get it, including back through the sump, or under load, it’s pushing past the rings and back into the intake via the PCV.

Either way, best to take it to someone who can diagnose it for you. It’s not a particularly difficult issue to diagnose once they can look at a few things.

    • Thanks … sounds good !! … I will be taking it to the mechanic coon. I was hoping to get a bit of an understanding of what the prob might be.

  • "Misfiring system"

    • That would be a bad sniper?

    • LOL :)

  • Definitely needs tune-up and nothing more.
Make sure the exhaust system is to spec as well

  • Did you find out what it was?

    • My mechanic is booked solid for the next few weeks. I'll post the verdict.

      • To me it sounds like a wire that is part of the ignition system is faulty or stripped and grounds when you are going around the corner due to the motion of the car but lets see. I'm curious

  • Thanks all for your thoughts … the mechanic diagnosed the fuel injectors to be the problem.
