Time to make use of those cast iron pans bought from Amazon 👌

    • I cant use mine anymore, cooked eggs on it the other day and they completely stuck to the bottom.I seasoned it when i first got it, thought i did it right as i had just seasoned a wok. do you know how you are supposed to take care of them? I am sure i must be doing something wrong. Hard to get the stuck food off the pan also

        Couple of things:

        • Just because the cast iron is seasoned, you still need to use oil. Seasoned =/= non-stick.

        • Heat may potentially be too high and with cast iron, i generally cook mostly on the lowest setting of my gas stove (exception being searing meats).

        • Get a metal spatula or fish spatula - the scratching is a good thing and helps even out the surface so eventually the seasoning becomes smoother.

        • Awesome! thank you. Taken all of that on board

I watch Cowboy Kent Rollins on YouTube and he has some great tips for cooking with cast iron. We just cooked eggs this morning using low heat and sufficient oil, as well as making sure the pan is cleaned and oiled before putting it away is important. Definitely a bit more work than a non-stick, but much tastier and better for you as no chemicals when cleaning. Watch this video on how to clean it - https://youtu.be/a5NbQwzwUTw

@beeeej: +1 for Cowboy Kent. While you're at it watch all his videos on everything, great and wholesome channel.

@beeeej: Thanks for the link! He has a cast iron pan with a long handle and a handle cover, how would I clean the pan in this way if I have the 2 small handle version. Is best way to just put it down in the sink or some other clever way?

@Alex10: There's probably some clever way with short handle but I'd just do the same and put it in the sink, that's what I do with my cast iron Dutch oven.

        • Good info on the metal implements!

Years of Teflon PTSD had trained me to avoid metal implements but your comment makes a lot of sense.

          • @Telios: Didn't he say better to use a wooden spatula?

…. i'm still trying to season my aldi cast iron pan :/

    • +1

Are you finding it difficult? asking because I am planning to buy one from aldi.

      • My Aldi one has rusted big time and has permamnent black stuff on it. I will probably need to sand paper or rock wool it out. I can't recommend em to noobz.

      • +1

difficult - yes. i thought i had seasoned it properly prior to first use (there's an endless number of youtube vids on seasoning). but my marinated steak left what seems to be a permanent black crust on the cast iron, and nothing can remove it. wooden scraper. salt. soaking in water. washing detergent. steaming. steel wool. i.e. stuff you're not meant to use on a cast iron pan.

i want to buy the ringer / chainmail scrubber.. but it will cost as much as the pan lol

every man and his dog says it's easy but that's not my experience :(

        • There's a guide on how to season your pan a few pages into this book.

        • Heard same from too many people.. sounds like hard to maintain.

  • Kung Pao chicken recipe with no garlic, no dark soy, no Szechuan pepper??

    Bad bad bad.

  • All I remember is my mother and grandmother used cast iron to make us behave.

    • +1

did they cook you really nice food?

      • They preferred to hold the pan over my head.

        • oh i didn't think it was possible women could at all be the instigators of domestic violence.
