I Just Applied for a Job at Hardly Norman. Should I Hand over My OzBargain Patch?

So lost my job recently and to make ends meet I sold my soul to the devil and apply for a job at Harvey Norman.

Am I obligated to leave ozbargain forever?

Good luck with the new Job! I had a great proprietor when I worked at Harvey Norman during uni (11 years ago). Things have changed a lot… but this was his management style.

    1) Every saturday, we would grab a coke can from the vending machine and head to his office where he would pour a shot of Jim Beam (from one of those giant bottles) into our cans. I was 18 at the time, so this was AWESOME! Great competitive team culture, plus we weren't open on Saturdays.

    2) If we made our kpi targets (connects/warranties) - he would set up a minigolf hole. The more targets you made, the closer you took the shot. If you made it the shot, he would double our commission - just like that. I'm talking about $300-800 for a regular week being doubled.

One of the best retail managers/prop i've ever worked for. I learnt a lot about management styles during my time in retail. I hope to use that in my career now. I think individuals with sales experience is still a highly sought after skill in many industries. Everyone is a salesperson in the end, whether selling your services (physicians, dentists, architects & engineers), your business or in the traditional sense.

Also the BEST deals are directly with the suppliers (50% off RRP usually), so work on your relationships with the "reps".

  • I was about to make a inside man joke…but realised i was beat to it by like 100 other posts. I've spent toomuch time on this place…

Down with the demon, ironic the lil b was complaining now he's lapping up the floor with these tough times, the guys selfish and only sees the world in the circle he lives in.

      He's a communist.

      • Extreme communism and extreme capitalism are essentially the same thing

  • You mean hardly normal 😤😤 are they stil open, anyways just apply for a job and give us a huge special when you resign, tell us how long you last, and update us on tiktok, Instagram, or Facebook about your deals.

  • All the best, hopefully you could land the job :). I'll come and support if you'll be based in NSW.

  • I think the real question is, how can you consider yourself a true OzBargainer in the first place, when you call them "Hardly Norman" instead of "Hardly Normal"?!? Oxymoron much.

    • Wow. I only just realise that typo now. Point taken.

  • Hello my new best friend…

  • As long as it pays the bills then any job is good at the moment right.

They are big on the word "Team" in theory, not so much in practice.

I used to be an Admin Manager for them and I'm glad that I'm not now, that's all I have to say about that.

Despite me catching one of the Franchisees fleecing the company blind to the tune of $200k plus, as far as I am aware they did nothing about following that up yet they terminated me (oddly enough after I discovered this and bought it to the attention of their Head Office) for and I quote "Poor time management". I ran 5 Franchisee businesses by myself and still had time to see that money was going missing and I was the one sacked……

No - there's nothing fishy about that at all….

I wish you good luck but don't consider this a long term gig…..

Used to work for JM. Great deals to be had if you get to know what your looking for.

There are items in the system that from memory are coloured yellow in the system, they are exclusive to HN and usually a negotiated price for a particular set of specs. These are usually always the best deals to be had.

Just after a stocktake is always great.
Any item that hasn't hasn't sold in a period (usually 90 days) gets a markdown, and that figure can be pretty hefty depending on the price of the item.
If it's been there even longer then the markdown is higher.

Got at $1800 hp laptop, with an original cost to store of over $1600 for $501. It was the only one in the store and it had never been on show as it had been forgotten about/no room for it on display.

The beauty of their stocktake process is that another franchisee (who runs the same dept in a different town) is the one who sets how much the markdowns are. It's a little game they are forced to play with each other. And if the franchisees don't like each other then they will be quite ruthless with the markdowns.

Speakers and amps are usually very high margin (see 50% markdown and still making profit) especially if it's a store sourced brand and not the standard HN big names (they can still be a good 40% off). Usually a separate speaker pack and amp will have over 50% margin in it.

Cables/power boards/warranties are always massives item for the stores. Your main KPIs as a sales person but also where a massive amount of money is hiding.

Cooking appliances, not overly the small appliances but ovens/cooktops and rangehoods are swimming in money. There are plenty of items there with a sticker price of $1200+ dollars that u can probably get for $300-600.
Display items are always super cheap, as there are rebates available for the store, so end of life items are a steal. Alot of the deals are had when the items come in a package first and then are split up by the company/franchisee. Got a $1800 blanco rangehood for $250, and that was the normal deal on them.

Sell the right kitchen pack and you've made comms budget for the week.

Also, and this is the tip of the day for all of you, be nice and comfortable with the sales person, get them to make a big deal out of showing you the discount that are offering you, cos when they want to show you how nice they are being they will show you the POS screen, and this is where you might see the truth of it all…

There are 2 main things you Wanna sneak a look at on the screen, if they are taking a look at the batch screen looking for the best one to sell you (for their pocket), it lists every time that item has been received by the store, how long it's been sitting there and the cost of the item with most store based costs factored in.

It'll be, from memory, just a string of numbers depending on the value of the item, a $1000 TV might just say 478, that's it that the cost of the item, it's just written backwards.

The other page is the view item/discount page, again they'll make a show cos it looks good for you, but again there is some hidden info, this page doesn't always reflect the true cost of an item (the other view can include rebate money and other adjustments) but 90% of the time it's accurate (if the store has processed their paperwork correctly). Again on this page there will be a string of number just sitting their on the screen, not looking out of place, again just read it backwards, from memory it also includes cents. 55489 just looks like a random item number or something you wouldn't care about, but 984.55 is probably the cost of that 1200 TV your looking at.

    FU HN group.

  • Everyone gotta eat. All good as long as you do your job half arsed and don't spend a cent in there.

    • *unless its at cost or below

  • gtfo

  • GTFO

  • Don't worry, we are all hypocrite here…I am sure if a product is heavily discount in HN and not anywhere else, it will be ozbargained regardless XD

  • Yes. Unless you are thinking to sabotage HN
