  • Just in time for tax season perfect to stock up now.

    • How does it help tax saving?

      • Whoosh.

That's a banger, surprised people aren't hooping about this

    • +21

Do many people even use skype anymore with Whatsapp/Messenger/Viber/Facetime available? Even older people are using WhatsApp.

      • +10

When we (used to) travel international, Skype was great to call a non voip service (landline or mobile) when roaming (on Wi-Fi or on an international roaming SIM that has no voice minutes). Also good for the occasional international call for same where no international minutes on the domestic mobile plan.

And great as emergency back up.

      • +2

With Skype you can call Harvey Normal or Officeworks to check your order. Until all these businesses open Whatsapp line Skype is seen as very useful. 50% off the Skype international rate is great.

This deal Seems to come up one a year. Not bad if you still use Skype to pay for overseas calls but most mobile plans come with overseas calling included these days.

    • exactly, may be few countries are still not included in free calling zone

      • Yes but in those few countries, WhatsApp or other messaging apps are widely used anyways.

  • -1

Any reason to buy them? When you’ve free international calls, FaceTime and WhatsApp?

    • +4

There are a few use cases, including mine. My elderly mom lives in Italy and doesn't know how to use Whatsapp/Facetime etc. I recently moved from Boost to Optus and this 12-month SIM card does not have any international minutes inclusions. I use Skype-to-go to call my mom, dialling a Melbourne number from my phone, with Skype redirecting that call to my mum's landline in Italy.

      • I use Skype-to-go to call my mom, dialling a Melbourne number from my phone, with Skype redirecting that call to my mum's landline in Italy.

If you're using Skype anyway, why can't you call the international number using Skype directly from your phone (assuming your phone plan has internet data or you have wi-fi)? Why do you need to use the redirecting service?

        • I think thats what you gotta pay for. Using skype to call numbers. From what I know, skype is only free skype to skype.

          • @Boioioioi: Yes, but why call a number to get redirected to another number? By Skype paid account, you can call the intl number directly.

            • @virhlpool: Because if you call an international landline number with Skype you need Skype Credit - whether you use the app on your phone or you call the redirecting number, you still need Skype Credit to make that call. Calling the Melbourne number (that re-directs) doesn't cost me anything extra (I have unlimited AU calls like virtually everyone else these days). Why do not I use the Skype app to make that call? Because its not very good on mobile, based on my experience.

              • @bukowski73:

Because its not very good on mobile, based on my experience.

That's what I was curious about. I use Skype on Android phone and works ok generally. I can imagine it may not be as great as the re-direct method though.

              • @bukowski73: Skype to go or not, you still need to pay the same Skype out rates as you would by dialling out using the app.
The only extra convenience it provides is a dialling a local number without using data. But Skype out rates are still there, don't get confused that it's free.

Skype-to-Go is great for my personal use case.

I can register all my family mobiles (without Intl call credit inclusive) as registered numbers.

Then I setup Skype-to-Go landline dial in numbers (local Melb) for overseas contacts and then the family mobiles can call these numbers with a local call (which is inclusive - unlimited local calls - think $10 Amaysim).

Some of the family users inclusive of 90+ elderly who can't operate a smartphone so no point in installing the Skype app ;-)

          • @bs-a: Thanks for the details in here. I’m always looking for skype credit bargains for most of the reasons above. Will setup a skype to go today and see how it goes.

      • -1

I thought the main use case these days was scammers money laundering.

remember Unlimited Free Calls to USA and Canada Phone Numbers @ Google Hangouts

Also Boost has a decent amount of countries with unlimited calls included

    • Boost's international is very limited unless you buy the add-on, 28 days expiry. Skype works out cheaper if you only call occasionally to not included countries. I found that a major draw back with them, unable to send SMS or call phones in Europe.

  • Such high was the demand of these just a year back when Boost wasn't so much in the game with their free intl calls inclusion in their plans.

  • Thanks OP, this could not be more convenient as I can slash my tax bill to ATO by half now.

    • I can slash my tax bill to ATO by half now.

      How?

      • +2

You pay your tax with gift cards, can be google or skype and with gift cards being half price that means you pay half tax! So happy!

  • +1

Also good for non-tech savvy people to use to call their hometown. Had a old couple friends that made 4 international calls to Italy and Thailand on Telstra mobile unknowingly and cost them about $90 extra in the bill…ouch!
So i will introduce them to use Skype, just need to set it up for her on her iPhone.
Can we use ww gift cards to buy this Skype gc?
And is there any expiry date for the credits once applied?
    Thanks in advance.

    • Can we use ww gift cards to buy this Skype gc?

Not anymore. It stopped a while back at all stores. You can't pay with WW gift cards when buying ANY gift cards.

  • +2

    ABSOLUTLEY RIPPER DEAL OP!
    Cheers.
    Surprised this isn't as popular.
Thank you so much for the post.

  • +2

Handy when travelling overseas using hotel wifi or at airport
Calling rates are good if u are still on grandfathered unlimited plan which cost only 64 $ with 1/2 price gift cards
Hands free calls on Alexa devices.

    • +1

I missed the November deal. And my subscription is due in July, Yes God send with these 50% off Skype GC deal.

I'm on the grandfathered 600 mins plan. Not as good as yours :-) but hey I can't possibly talk for 600 mins in a month so it will have to do.

  • Does anyone know of the credit expires?

  • +4

The world comprises more than 200 countries… not to mention the 1800xxx or 0800xxx or else that are almost never included in any plans. And no, VoIP doesn’t work for everything, you still need to be able to place phone calls.

Was waiting on this, woop woop! Thanks OP

  • I'm very new to this, are we able to use Wish gift cards to purchase these?

    • +1

Gift cards can't be used to buy gift cards. It worked for a long time, even though the T&C's said you couldn't, but recently they closed it off so you can't. YMMV.

      • Yes ausremi, that was my personal experience as well.

  • Started to wonder if they had stopped doing these deals as not noticed any I'm sure end of last year and into this year yet, normally there are a few deals before mine is due in July. I have the world sub and a Skype number. But I also have boost $150 plan with calls international and txt.
I don't use this Skype as much as I used to but I still grab this, had this deal not happened I might have passed on Skype,

I'm not even sure if they still do a world sub, I know from a previous sub I had I let it expire and lost my old sub and world was next best thing but way more. So it might be different again or might cost even more now. But if I grab these and put them into my account come July they will take payments from my credit.

As it's been a while is it $25 the highest cards, I'm sure any higher stopped ages ago?

    • I got 300 mins globally for AU$5 about 6 years ago and have been clinging to it, even though it's not sold anymore.

I can go months not using it at all, having Facebook, WhatsApp, Facetime and 100 international minutes from my mobile provider, but then there are months I would spend 4 hrs hanging on Skype, so makes it even, especially after stocking up on these 50%-off cards.

  • -4

Who the hell uses Skype anymore?? It's dogsh**

  • Pretty expensive calls rates plus a connection charge on every call. It’s a shame VOIP providers such as penny wise don’t exist any more. Been trying to find and alternative that you only pay for what you use not a monthly cost.

    • +2

Only if you don't subscribe to a "pack" and use the service as a Skype credit.

Some of us on a subscription made it worth hanging on to with these 50% off deal.

Eg my grandfathered World Subscription 600 mins per month cost approx $74. 50% off make that $37 (in real $$$)
      $37/12 = $3.08/ month. Divide that into 600 mins = 0.005 per min
Granted we don't use every minute of it ;-p but hey at $3 a month to have this

Some even have it as World Unlimited which is great!!

      • I must have the world limited as it costs $201 but with this deal half that.
I did have a previous sub before that about 3 yrs ago which was cheaper but i let my sub expire and lost it and at time this was next best thing.
If this deal had not happened prior to my renewal then i just give it up.

I also have the skype number so people can phone within that country at local rates and get me on my mobile.

I think that's 37.50 but obviously half with deal.

Does anyone know what the gift cards they offer are $5,$10,$25 is there $50 or did they stop last year. Im not in my woolworths often so just wanted to know prior.

        • For this deal, $10 & $25 ones only as in-store ad confirmed.

      • I have the World Unlimited (grandfathered from years ago)…costs $128 a year ($64 with 50% off)…

        • +1

That's probably the sub i had until one time i forgot about its expire and lost it tried them to give me it again and said they cant as its old and no longer used. In other words if you keep paying it in time your all good.it was annoying as the new one they had was much more.
I have been on the current one for about three years.

  • None available in my local Woolies or online.
Can't find the deal in the catalogue as well.

Could you please provide more detail as to where these can be obtained from?
And where did you see the deal?

    • Page 19

      • +1

Page 19 has an advertisement for "Fully loaded cookies" ;)
Not sure why, but in mine it was on page 40. Probably a different version of the catalogue.
        Thanks!

Now just need to find a branch that sells them.

        • OK went to my local Woollies and can't find them in the Gift Cards section initially.

Then going thru them row by row and guess where I find them?
Bottom row right at the corner. Certainly not very prominent position for a "special" :-(

Also no sign promoting them either (no yellow sticker over special item). Well done Woollies

          • @bs-a: Look at the positive - you found them.

          • +1

@bs-a: Same here in two stores only available in $10 and $25 value.

  • +1

Thanks Op :) Got more than 5 at a casher and a woolie staff didn't care.

  • Bought a couple. Unfortunately our main Skype account isn't linked to me, such a pain to recover account details.

$10 is great to top up my own account for overseas travel :) I use it as a backup or to call when needed (like last time I was stranded in Fiji)

  • I saw a customer try to buy 100 (literally 100) in self serve. She bought 20 before staff caught on, but she said she'll just go to other stores…

  • Hi I am looking for some help here. I am currently stuck overseas with my wife thanks to covid-19 and not really keen on taking long haul flights at the moment. So I would love to have some skype credits to make international calls (airlines, immigration etc). I have been keeping an eye on these skype gift cards for a while, missed the previous deal in November last year. Contacted my friends in Bris to see if they can find some in local store, but no luck at all:(
Would anyone be able to grab me a few skype gift card (like 2-3). I am happy to pay a bit extra as gratitude. Drop me PM if you can, thanks in advanced.
