Do Huawei Phones Pose a Security Threat?

I was comparing a Huawei Mate 30 Pro to a Samsung S20 Plus and noticed there is a lot of concerns that Huawei as a company are involved in spying and commercial espionage.

I found this article and it seems very compelling.
https://www.theverge.com/2019/3/17/18264283/huawei-security-…

Do you believe this is a concern or just scare mongering?

    Who is Huawei

  • On the original question: neither phone. Huawei for security concerns and Samsung for their software bloat and reversed back/home/apps buttons.

Yes not only is Huawei and other Chinese tech manufacturers a risk, the country and CCP regime is a risk to the rest of the world.

    • +7

      Yep!

I'm sick and tired of everyone tiptoeing around this fact. God forbid we offend China! Too much money at stake!

I'm amazed at how the whole world is sleepwalking towards an inevitability that scares the crap out of me.
Money is being used to influence political decision making, China is bribing and blackmailing entire countries to stay quiet, and our world order is being changed right before our eyes.

Money is being put in front of our very sovereignty, and NOW that the Australian Government is finally saying no to China (in very small ways), China is getting more aggressive. It's time to cut our dependency on them…. big time.

THEY ARE NOT OUR FRIENDS. They need our resources to fuel their rise in power. Germany expanded for this reason, and so did Japan.
      War is coming.

      • +5

Australia made its bed, now got to lie in it.

Resources boom. Yay for Chinese buying our resources so they can manufacture exports to sell to us. Divert some of that to build their military which now terrorises us.

Yay. Chinese come and pay good money for our houses. Some say now too expensive, many happy home owners. Borrow more money to buy houses.

Now you have your private bits in a vice. Don't keep selling to China, no money to pay the mortgage. Don't buy cheap stuff from China and can't afford to put food on the table and pay the mortgage.

Starts and ends with us, bit of an anti climax isn't it. Don't save the windfall, now stuck, can't say no because you need a hit of vitamin M(oney).

      • +2

They might not need much actual war, if you can occupy a country from within and have enough control to know they will follow what they're told you don't need to go to war, We are already close to that.
The fear of upsetting them is amazing, so much so you can't even have a discussion about it as people will get uncomfortable and shut it down.

Because people are up to their eye balls in debt that requires money from China to pay off. Nobody saves anymore everyone wants a bail out, whether it is from the government or inadvertently from the Chinese.

Financial freedom gives you the ability to say whatever you want because you know you will live. Why do you think Chinese elite have been sending their money and kids overseas seemingly out of reach of the Chinese government. But unfortunately not for the majority. Just look at the UQ, students can't speak up

As opposed to US? who has decades of history of actually militarily invading the middle east and now Trump fanning the flames of racism and hate so much that it's lierally burning there.
You're so blinded that you cannot actually made a judgement anymore

      • -2

So it was Trump who murdered George and kicked all this off, gee didn't know it was him without the wig on his head.
The USA are not a threat to us, too many things in common and we are of little value to them.

China on the other hand believe they are the superior race and can do no wrong, its us stupid westerners who are the issue, that the world is rightfully theirs.
If not the world then at least Asia, the deceptive tactics of debt traps to countries they KNOW can't pay their bills but will take up some land for military use, later which will work against them.
The continual reassurance that they are no longer a threat to anyone as they build bases in the South China Sea, trying to reassure neighbors they're safe.
The securing of supply chains from many countries to make sure they are in control of food and minerals from various western countries.
The immediate backlash for anyone who speaks out against China, (look up Drew Pavlou) followed by punishment and warnings how anything we have can be taken away. More bullying & fear.

The majority of their people blindly follow what they've been told to follow out of fear, look at the social credit system in place! Want to talk about oppression? check that out!

In very large parts their culture and regime are completely incompatible with the Western way of life, they are not willing to change that as it is their power within their home country and if that's seen to be challenged that power is lost.
If you do not think they are the greatest risk to the world then you need to start doing some reading and see what goes on.

Nice try dodging the question! The amount of Yellow Peril racism evident in your post is mindblowing.

          LOL

they are the greatest risk to the world then you need to start doing some reading

The greatest risk to the world is who starts WW3. Which country has been involved in wars for the majority of recent history and for what BS self-furthering reasons?

You're delusional, a racist - or both. I want to reply to the rest of your post, but: https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/518524-never-argue-with-a-f…

@khell: The question was "as opposed to the US"
I answered that and said that they are not a threat to us.
I'm sure you like to blame Trump for all of America's ills even though they've been there for a very long time, sadly we can't lump all this on one idiot. To do so would give him far to much credit.
Yes America do love a war, look at Obama, who holds the title of PUSA who was in the most amount of wars at the same time and was at war from the moment he was in office until the day he left office, also had 10x the amount of air-strikes than Bush had, but lets skip over that as its not Trump.
            No dodging questions here mate.

Oh racism, of course, waiting for that card to be shown. Pretty easy one to throw around especially when you can't support a conversation so just shout racist! and then think you've won.

The next world war will drag everyone in to it to pick a side, no one will be left unaffected.

You've bought into the propaganda from the CCP, you know like how they were trying to censor reports about the origins of COVID? When they were leaning on EU not to report it as originating in China? No bad press as it wasn't them right. Neither were the 3 previous outbreaks I bet.
Or how they were blaming America for coming in to China to release the virus on them? Just laughable things.
It's a country of lies, run by people who are 100x worse than Trump on a bad day with what they have done and what they want to do to keep control of their country and people.
China suppresses free speech, regulates political activity and exercises a pervasive program of propaganda in education, the arts and the news media. - In that way alone they are incompatible with the Western world.
You think those military bases on islands which they've made in the SCS are just to look after their neighbors? China is preparing for war, if you doubt that then you're the problem.

I'm always up for a discussion, not even here to neg people or call names. Just seems people are too scared of a bit of reality.

            • @91rs: I called you a racist because you are one. I've read a lot of posts like yours, but I never thought Ozbargain would be the first place where I read someone writing that they, "believe they are the superior race". Speak for yourself and western civilisation's colourful (pun not intended) history of racism! It is intolerant people like yourself who call them a threat/incompatible/whatever because they are different. Classic Yellow Peril argument.

Do you know which other countries are different and "incompatible"? Saudi Arabia for one. Where are the pitchforks on that one? The answer lies in that they are subservient to US interests in spite of being completely "incompatible" - it's you who has been loaded up on the very same propaganda you think I've "bought into".

Neither were the 3 previous outbreaks I bet.

No, they weren't - or are you going to show you're a science denier next?

You think those military bases on islands which they've made in the SCS are just to look after their neighbors? China is preparing for war, if you doubt that then you're the problem.

I guess the countless military bases the US has all over the world are also not to look after their neighbours! How long has the US been preparing for war, then?

The problem is people like you. Intolerant of others, hellbent on villainising something you don't know a thing about besides what you've read on the Internet, and convinced war is the only option. The colonialists that subjagated peoples across the entire world also thought like you.

I'm done here, now I really do look like a fool for being baited.

              • +1

                @khell: Yeah not racist.
You genuinely believe China is not a threat?
You didn't see the part where I said USA love them some war?

You did see the part where I said "China on the other hand believe they are the superior race" C-H-I-N-A … Its taught to them in schools.

Plenty of incompatible countries with the West out there, but like you said many have other interests, money usually. Also China is in our region, Sudi is not a direct threat, they also don't have a billion and a half people they can just command go fight for them.

It was a joke, that China were trying to censor the world on the origin of COVID, pretending it didn't start there like previous viruses which we know for fact did … its undisputed they did originate in China. I've not ever denied science that I can recall, not starting now.
Swine, Avian etc .. Just like COVID which they're trying to say wasn't them. More lies and attempts at disinformation so they don't look bad.
                https://www.who.int/csr/don/archive/country/chn/en/

Depends on if you're on good terms with your neighbors or if they regard you as gum under their shoes or if they make statements like "Australia will pay an “unbearable price” if it sides with the United States in an economic “Cold War”". Doesn't sound friendly does it? One too many tennis balls or frisbees over the fence me thinks.

I am not saying go to war with them, I am not supporting or suggesting war at all.
I am saying we will be dragged in to a war with them and we will not win.
I am saying I believe based on their actions that they are the biggest threat to us and the world at this point in time.

Maybe have a re-read of the things I've said before you start name calling and telling me what the "problem with people like you" is.
Otherwise you're no better than China wanting to censor anyone who raises concern about them.

                  From the US CDC website
                  https://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/information_h1n1_virus_qa.htm

Where did the 2009 H1N1 flu virus come from?
The 2009 H1N1 influenza virus (referred to as “swine flu” early on) was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009

                  And from another page
                  https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/2009-h1n1-pandemi…
In the spring of 2009, a novel influenza A (H1N1) virus emerged. It was detected first in the United States and spread quickly across the United States and the world. This new H1N1 virus contained a unique combination of influenza genes not previously identified in animals or people.

From April 12, 2009 to April 10, 2010, CDC estimated there were 60.8 million cases (range: 43.3-89.3 million), 274,304 hospitalizations (range: 195,086-402,719), and 12,469 deaths (range: 8868-18,306) in the United States due to the (H1N1)pdm09 virus.

Additionally, CDC estimated that 151,700-575,400 people worldwide died from (H1N1)pdm09 virus infection during the first year the virus circulated.**

I missed those Nokia days, the governments will have petabytes of data all about snakes, now they also know which fruit I love to chop.

  • +6

If you believe african gangs are a threat, then yes huawei is dAnGeRoUs

  • Why is Huawei considered a security risk, but not Oneplus and the other Chinese mobile manufacturers?

  • well, tbh they are both bad. Considering that phones know your location and everything about you, i'd figure china would pose risk if you travel there,

  • This is so politicized it just make it more expensive for consumer to buy new technology. There is no substantial evidence to say Huawei's phone have spy system, even Huawei itself have sign a agreement with some of the Europe countries that there phone have no spyware on it. I do have Huawei phone and say NO and I presume most people who voted YES probably never owned a Huawei phone.

    • +1

Most people have nothing important on their phones and I doubt China cares about the 20 other pictures that wasn't instagram worthy.

I'd be more worried about my health insurer knowing I visit regularly KFC, HJ, Maccas and OD on two portions then jack up my health insurance costs.

I read the heading and thought this might be interesting but came here to see people fighting over and defending their choice. Simply put I would refrain from using Google or Huawei devices. I would possibly be more safer going towards products being currently spied by US than China. Call me cynical but I have a fear of not knowing anything about my data with China. In a few years someone will blow the lid over what US were doing with our data but that is not going to be the case with China. You will never know what happened with the data.. Tbh I would prefer a phone made by another Asian country like India or Vietnam because their philosophy has never been to take over the world and I prefer doing my business where I don't feel threatened using the device.

  • With Chinese funding Victoria on soon to be new projects, effecting aus/USA relations Chinese spying on Australia isn't the problem, it's the triangle relationship Australia has with both nations.

All I know is America invests 850 billion dollars in Australia, and china 140 billion, what that money goes to via both nations no idea.

Why Australia needs china, when the value is less then 200 billion.

America has self interests, and since china is now investing in Africa and most third world countries, not only for dominance but also to help those (while falling to debt ) a chance to eliminate poverty.

That's something America has never been able to achieve internally and externally.

we give up privacy for convenience, this is pretty much true with any company.
why single out Huawei, I don't buy what is said in the media.

    • +4

Because Huawei is Chinese and the Chinese do not kowtow to the global preeminent superpower. America has a long history of literally destroying countries that do not bend over for them.

      Case in point: https://foreignpolicy.com/2019/10/30/the-united-states-overt…

      • haha
but watch the current trade war, only God knows who will be winning this one in a decade.

        • I see India making a lot of out this trade war.
For instance, Australia will now move a lot of trade from China to India.
India has a large, YOUNG, population to work! Chinese population is aging due to one child policy.

  • Huawei and Samsung sell themselves as a technology/hardware company where as Google is a data company.
I own phones from both and using Huawei's P30 Pro at the moment which isn't affected with the Google Services lockout like the newer phones. I prefer their hardware hands down and have no issues there where as I don't trust Google at all with my privacy.

  • If you want to know how f'ed up being in bed with the US is here's an example:

If you take a trip to Japan, you would obviously have to give up your finger prints. It's safe in the hands of the Japanese of course….

That is until you consider the pact Obama signed in 2014 with Shinzo Abe over the guise of 'terrorism'. That means the FBI have access to your finger prints via proxy of Japan.

And since the Australian Government is a part of the 5 eyes they also have access to your finger prints.

I love Japan so I still go, but must admit I sweat a little every-time I pass customs.

    • Would be interested to know your source for intelligence sharing of fingerprints within 5 Eyes.

    • … but must admit I sweat a little every-time I pass customs.

What did you do to pose a security threat to the US? Same as what Huawei did?

  • i guess if you look at huawei close up it might not look so bad. but you need to look at the big picture..it might not be so pretty.
like most of people don't think hitler was that bad back in 1933…

    • +2

      Funny you mentioned Hitler.
I guess if you look at Trump close up it might look so bad. but you need to look at the big picture..it might be even worse.
Yet he was elected and possibly re-elected. Guess who is posing bigger security threat to the world?

  • If people are so worried just stop being cheap and buy an iPhone. Only $2k. You said you were worried about your privacy, right?

  • I am not sure if anyone agrees, but there is way too much China-bashing in the west. I think this is partly because China is effectively replacing the Soviet as the other great power in the world and a lot of people in the west are just uncomfortable with that.

It is unfortunate that our beloved Ozbargain has now turned into a political opinion forums (which normally has no end and never ends up with a pure agree to disagree).

I vote for banning political related discussions in OzBargain.
