Cheapest they have been so far.

These are passive speakers, you will need an amplifier to power them.

These P17’s could be budget entry-level bookshelf speakers in a stereo setup for casual listening, or as budget rear’s in a surround / home theatre setup.

Notes: From my understanding these P17 are the passive version of the active R1700BT (P12 was passive version of R1280T), another difference is the R1700BT are angled cabinet, these P17 are conventional straight-on.
These P17’s could be an alternative to the popular Voll’s.

  • What are a reasonable value amp to go along with them? Say <$50

    • +9

Maybe something like this SMSL SA-36A.
Or this Mini TPA3116 if you need Bluetooth & Tone controls (this one is Fulfilled by Amazon so probably the better bet).

      • really helpful. tempted to get one of the mini TPA3116 amps for my current passive speakers - currently around $65. Canadian reviewer on amazon for this amp says it is paired with P17s and it sounds great.

      • How would it compare to something like this (incidentally also manufactured by the same people), given I wouldn't need it for the bluetooth function?

        https://www.amazon.com.au/Nobsound-NS-10P-Audio-Pre-amplifie…

        • +1

What you linked is a pre-amplifier. You will need an amplifier to connect the speakers and power them properly.

I will recommend the Fufilled by Amazon option in the comment above.
But if you must have tubes I found this Dilvpoetry R50 6J4 Tube Amplifier

  • I was happy with the Volls for PC speakers. They have not very much power though, difference between $200 bluetooth speakers with a lot of bass and the $100 Volls is night and day, makes the Volls sound rubbish. But you might not want a lot of bass or power in general at your computer so the Volls could be ideal still.

    • I currently own Voll B50. Are there better passive bookshelf speakers at Voll's price point of $129? Before I bought Voll, I was comparing it with this Edifier P17 and came to the conclusion that Voll is better due to its larger driver (5.25 inch) and better looks.

      • Not at $129 - i think these are about as good as you're going to get

add a sub on a xover

        • I am still in the 30 days no question asked return window. Should I return the Voll and get this ? I have a sub so don't need more bass. Just need good sound and good soundstage. What do you think of minx min 12?

      • I bought some second hand Aktimate Maxi speakers for $100 iirc. They sound incredible. I'm really liking powered speakers and not having to fuss with an amp or anything.

        • I was on powered speakers before but changed to receiver and passive speakers mainly for movies as I watched a lot of them on my PC. So still very much keen to stay on this route. Have tried the following and current setup does sound better with surround sound:
          Bose 2.1 speakers
          Compact 2.1 soundbar
          Logitech z5500

          • @bestbarginever: Yeah a good sub adds a lot to any speaker pair. I wish I knew how to stop the buzzing on some speakers. Instead of finding the magic cable that doesn't buzz, I'd like a little device that acts as a DAC or just anything to stop the buzz. I tried Jaycars ground loop isolators but they just added more buzz. Buzz from plugging them straight into a tv headphone jack I mean.

            • @AustriaBargain: I don't have this problem though as I am plugging my sound system into a PC via HDMI cable
And yes if it is analogue it does introduce static or buzz as you called it (i hope they mean the same thing; not very knowledgeable in this area)

            • @AustriaBargain: Get an amp with a built-in dac like the smsl Ad18 or Q5. While getting separates might be better in the long run I'd avoid daisy chaining as it might add more noise to your setup.

I wish they came in a better colour. Ugly af

    • There's not much choice really… its either cherry or black vinyl or white ash…

I'm surprised that Edifier can even offer polished cherry at this price but hey, someone in china is doing a bang up job of not offering anything but cherry.

Black vinyl is boring and ash is going out of style.

      • I haven't seen this model in black or white. Which would go a lot more with the buffet my record setup sits on. The cherry is just such a niche colour and doesn't go with much unless the area you're putting them is dark coloured.

  • wanna use them as rear speakers along with my q acoustic speakers. can anyone provide feedback on the sound quality on these.

    • +1

If you watch movies at reference level like me these will last about 5 minutes. 20 watts is not a lot.

      • agreed, will look for better ones. Thanks.

  • Are these for audiobooks?

  • 20 Watts is not a lot of watts. You'd have to be careful not to blow them up when connected to an AV receiver.

    • +1

My guess is at $47 per speaker most will use these with “value amp’s” like ones suggested in the first comment.

  • +1

Still waiting for a good deal on the R1850DB.

  • Wish there were deals for the R1700BT ):

    • +1

Yeah Edifier claim to have a sale now, but prices are hardly any better than dealers.

    • oh so, can these be used as rear speakers in a home theater setup and run off the amplifier?

  • Sorry everyone, I am confused as to where I got the original deal specifications from
(I copy pasted them from the last deal I posted).

On Edifier AU & Edifier US websites, specifications for P12 & P17 state 20W-100W.
    https://www.edifier.com/au/en/speakers/p17-passive-bookshelf…

My thoughts are since the Voll B44’s are rated @ 75W that P17 @ 20W-100W specification is more accurate.

  • Tossing up between four of these arrayed around a room or a Google Home Max - are these going to be heaps weaker?

    • +1

A single google home max? It will be louder (apparently they're around 200w) but I'd rather surround sound. Very weird choice tbh, why not get a pair of 300 speakers and a 100 amp, possibly even a subwoofer? There's more to audio than just loudness (looking at you jbl).

  • Would these be suitable for a record player setup?

    • Yes, you just need an appropriate amp that has a 4ohm output.

    • Please refer to the links in the first comment for value amplifiers which are similar in price to the speakers.

The link you shared goes to an empty shopping cart.

      • Strangely I cant find what the sensitivity of the P17 is. That would determine how efficient they are.

Granted I think just about any amp made in the last 25yrs could power them to a decent level however it would be nice to know what the exact number is.

The fact they say 6 ohm would tend to tell you the need a slightly stronger amp. I bought a set last time at $97 and its still in the garage.

Will need to drag them out and hook up something like that $400 Onkyo and see how it goes.
