  • Just wondering how often people replace their bowls and plates? Or how long do their bowls and plates last?

Do you replace whole sets or do you have all mix match? 😆

    • +10

Corelle last forever. Buy once and pass it down for generations.
Also, you can never have too many small plates and small bowls (unless you don't have space for it).

    • +2

The only time I'd have to replace my Corelle crockery is when I accidentally drop a plate or bowl on our tiles :( Sometimes they're completely fine and sometimes they just go smash, lol. But we have at least 12 of each at home, so not a worry to go and buy a new one or set, but I'd never stray from Corelle. I honestly think I might have the same set linked above and that's at least 25+ years right there.

      • yes, agreed. stick to plain old white Corelle. Don't go for their patterns. you can buy individual plates/blows without having to replace a whole set. From memory even Big W sells individual corelle pieces.

    • Recently I have been getting rid of my IKEA set from uni. I'm replacing them with individual bowls and plates in stoneware mostly from ecology. I like having them all be different from each other. But they are about $10 - $15 a piece so not worth it for everyone.

I bought a Corelle set (slightly different to the one shown here) when I first moved out of home in 1989.
Lost a couple of pieces along the way to drops on kitchen tiles (they survive more than they break - but when they do break the explosion is amazing).
The rest has survived housemates, partners and now kids and going strong. Not fancy, but I'm impressed.

    • +1

We had ours for 20+ years now.
One of those items you buy and never regret, just buy more, for family and friends as presents.

  • +3

They are light and they stack compactedly. (Just made up a word)

    • +2

agree on the stackability index - you can have more plates avaibale in your crockery draw - and classic white is unbeatable - easy to clean also

      great deal

      • and alsa are much lighter than the cheap stoneware rubbish.

Beware that the mugs are of different material, they're just like the usual ceramic mugs and made in China.

    • +1

i'm buying the set but will send the mugs to vinnies

  • +1

What's the regular price on these?

    • It shows $60 now.

I really wish Corelle would make mugs of the same Vitrelle glass. I'm not sure why it's so hard.

I keep trying to find mugs I like and being disappointed.

Ordinary glass breaks too easily, but doesn't stain and is nice to drink from.
    Steel sometimes tastes funny.
Bone China is both fragile and stains easily.
Stoneware I just don't like, heavy and clumsy.

I use glass (bodum) at home, but have had some nasty cuts when hitting one against the tap. Stainless double walled in the caravan. Corelle would be so much nicer.

    • Yes, their original cups were so good, I still have 2 more left. I think they stopped making them around 15-20 years ago, have been on the hunt for the past many years and no luck finding any leftover ones.

  • +1

Plenty of my Corelle sets are chipped. I throw them away piece by piece as that happens.

    Chip resistant, not proof.

    • +3

Yup agree - I misinterpreted break-resistant to mean break-free and tested it. Silly me. Wifey is still angry about it lol.

    • For their weight, the chip resistance is golden. Had a few bumps and mishaps but still perfect here.
Parent's place had those oven proof HEAVY ceramic dinner plates, even lifting them feels like a chore, let alone washing and storing them

  • +1

DFO Morabbin Airport has a Corelle shop that sells complete sets, or pieces, heaps to choose from.
I have been using the same set for many years can recommend,

We’ve found the IKEA OFTAST range to be similar chip resistance, feel & weight characteristics for a fraction of the price. The OFTAST are a (marginally) lower quality control level though - in that they don’t stack absolutely perfectly.

Light and great value ~ been my favourite so far

      Cant go wrong @ $0.70 - $1.50 each

  • Best in the dishwasher. Lightweight too

  • +1

    Are these lead-free?

    • +1

      Yes they are vegan friendly

  • Love these!

  • Break and chip resistant.. definitely not break and chip proof though… having worked at a store stocking shelves & dropped corelle many-a-time, let me tell you.. when they do break - they EXPLODE like glass.
