Anyone managed to transition their old plan from Optus HFC Cable to FTTC NBN? Or get a reasonable plan from the switchover?

I received a letter from Optus advising that I must switch from Optus Cable to the NBN (FTTC). Ideally I'd like to keep my current plan with Optus

Current Cable bundle plan:

100Mbps speedpack (speeds have always been fine in my area), Unlimited Data
Fetch Mighty 1TB with all 4 Fetch Channel Packs Included
Fetch Mini
Unlimited Local Calls and Worldsaver Ultimate International calls

$100 per month

After chatting on the phone with two operators, an equivalent bundle to my current plan (apart from upping to upload from 2Mbps to 20Mbps - which will not significantly benefit my usage significantly) has been offered for ~$155/month (this is after a $10 per month 'discount' they offered).

Paying $660 extra a year (then $780 extra when the 'discount' expires) for the same service apart from increased upload speeds that I do not make use of is frankly absurd, my HFC has been perfectly fine speedwise for the last 5 years.

I've looked at Telstra, iiNet, TPG and Aussie Broadband

Aussie Broadband's $89 plan looks ok but still feels like a downgrade (paying $11 less per month but losing both the Fetch Mighty + Fetch Mini, the 4 Channel packs, and losing the unlimited local calls and international calls), the rest also look a bit garbage

Has anyone managed to negotiate a reasonable price (i.e. $100-$125) from Optus or another provider for a plan that pretty much matches the current Cable plan I have?

I can live with losing the unlimited local calls and international calls as long as the price is similar to the current plan with everything else staying pretty much the same.

I really dislike how the NBN plans have turned out in this situation (esp Optus - paying more for less or much more for roughly the same).

I would suggest you look at whirlpool forums. Im paying $90 while retaining fetch/sports with 100/40. people are also getting $15 off P/m for their entire contract.

    • Thanks for that! I'll use that info and whirlpool as a starting point to negotiate with them, rather than completely getting ripped off. It seems like they are relying on most customers just going into this transition 'in the dark' to rip people off

  • You can't keep your current Optus plan. Aussie Broadband has NBN with Fetch

    • Yeah I've already seen those plans but they also effectively come to $154 to match my current plan's inclusions (Fetch Mighty + Fetch Mini + 4 Channel Packs + unlimited calls included - with reduced international rates).

Even with the call pack gone $134 is still a significant price hike for a plan that is effectively not better in any meaningful way for my usage unfortunately

      • How long have you had NBN in your area? I am in a similar position and would like to stay on the Cable for the 18 months or whatever it is supposed to be, but have heard Optus is keen to get people off their cable network once NBN is available.

        • From pretty much today. They gave me exactly 90 days to switch to NBN or be completely disconnected

        • Yeah the 18 months disconnection date doesn't apply to Optus cable.

  • Yup, NBN is unfortunately a mandatory downgrade from Optus cable.

Tip though: go with an NBN provider that is not Optus so when your NBN install inevitably goes wrong you won't be left without any internet for a fortnight.
