Buy Now or Wait a Bit to Buy a New PC?

It's time to buy a new PC. I'm looking to get a PC built around an AMD 3600 with a 450 motherboard, 32G of RAM (I do run VMs for dev), 5600TX.

I've been waiting for years to upgrade and I've finally decide to do it. But COVID seems to have pushed up some prices. I've seen various comments in deal posts saying prices are due to come down, new AMD 550 mobos coming out will push down 450 prices, etc, etc.

So I'd like to see what others think about this. I don't want to put off my purchase too long, but if waiting 4 months (tops) drops the price enough, then I would consider it. Also are there certain times of the year when prices are better?

What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance

  • but if waiting 4 months (tops)

Could wait for the 4000 series

    • Then wait for the 5000 Series then wait for the 6000 Series…..

      • Are those expected to be coming out in around 4 months?

  • Prices are still high from COVID but are coming down. You might be able to find some EOFY deals but it'll probably be around a couple of months before we'll see pre-covid prices again

  • I would wait. Quite a few items are at 10%-20% WFH premiums. There is extra welfare money splashing around.

Start buying each component along the way

  • I was looking to upgrade easter last year, but held out for new tech. Still holding out, and still not missing much. And now that the PS5 has more details officially released, its interesting to see PC specs (pci-e 5 and 6, ddr5 ram) details start to emerge.

I've been price tracking all year, and the decreases in CPU prices dont make up for the increases in mobo prices. Ram is still the same. Nvme drives have gone up a bit too.

I'm personally going to wait another year. Might get an SSD in the meantime.

  • AMD is starting to bundle Horizon Zero Dawn with some processors in the Europe region. Hopefully the deal comes here too. So may be worth waiting for unless a good deal comes up.

  • Buy Now Pay Later… it is what everyone is into. Whether you are a buyer of products or buyer of shares. Sounds like magic money.

AMD has started releasing their XT CPU's, so you might already see a small price decrease on the 3600.

Ryzen 4000 is assumed to be released this year, but there is no guarantee of this or a further price drop.

AMD has been loud about releasing halo GPU's this year, so 5600TX's might be run out. Further, rumours about Nvidia RTX doubling performance could further push down prices on release if rumours are even half true.

That said, they can only discount a $300 CPU and a $500 GPU so much. And you will have your computer maybe three months earlier.

If that was what I wanted I would look for sales and buy now. Is a few hundred dollars worth waiting for you?
