    This is a good deal, just beware of the limitations of a such a small pan.

    I know everyone has their own method of cleaning them. I personally use some coarse salt and aluminium foil to scrub off stuck on food, then wash with hot water and sometimes a little bit of soap (a big no-no apparently). Always thoroughly dry immediately.

    For cooking eggs, I use a little bit of coconut oil (the spray version works very well).

          You shouldn't, as it will remove the oil coat and expose the iron.

          The salt should only be used to remove rust.

          • @Shwayne: not familiar with cast iron, how is that any different from the chainmail scrubs?

          • @Shwayne: I regularly scrub my pans (CI an CS) with [edit: oil soaked] steel wool to remove any burnt food residue and then give the pan a quick stove top season. Scrubbing the pan like this should only remove any poor quality seasoning anyway. It would take a significant effort to strip the good stuff.

            • @TEER3X: No, neither of those things. The rings are not tiny (on mine they are about 10mm diameter), so bits of food don’t really get trapped in it and just falls right off when you hold the scrubber under the tap.

      i just use a scrubbing brush and dish soap, the reason people say don't use soap is from back when it contained lye

      make sure to not leave it wet long enough to rust and you'll be fine, i've had metal spatulas or steel wool take the seasoning off of carbon-steel pans but cast iron it seems to be almost impossible to accidentally remove it once it's properly seasoned and the lodge pans come with a really good seasoning on them.

      Everyone parrots the "DONT USE SOAP" line but realistically if you apply a light coat of oil after drying immediately it'll do no harm.

        I rarely even do that unless it looks really dull; after a while of use, the coating is pretty solid, and can easily stand up to song dish soap. Only time it needs a reoil is after cooking acidic foods e.g. tomato sauces

          I agree. Usually don't even need to do the oil, I just do it for piece of mind.

      Do people just use those to make pancakes and crepes?

      I like my cast iron pan but feel it needs the high sides to stop spatter.

        I got one of these in the last sale and my family is obsessed with it. It's amazing for grilled cheese toasties, eggs, bacon… Anything that might be a bit tricky to flip when there are sides.

  • cast iron is great, but a pain. cleaning you just need water and a non metal brush. NO SOAP, you will remove the oil from the pan. after washing, dry immediately with a rag. put it in the oven in low heat for a few minutes to really dry the pan. then put a little bit of oil all over, inside, outside, handle, everywhere to season it again. stick it back in the oven and leave it there upside down for like15-30 minutes and then turn off the heat. leave it in there until tomorrow or the next time you use it or use the oven so you have to take it out. this maintains the slippery nonstick surface for me. i also use calphalon and all-clad, but really enjoy my cheap lodge pan. also hit the gym to cook with a cast iron pan, lol.

      If you're going through all this seasoning process you can definitely use normal dish soap. Only strong detergents or very high heat will take off good seasoning.

      I don't find them as painful as that. Once they are seasoned well, there is no real problem with using mild soap like dishwashing liquid. After each cook all I do is wash like normal, dry out as much as I can then place on a hotplate for 15-20 minutes to ensure it's dry. Every now and then (once a week if it's a new pan, or otherwise once every month or so) bake a few more layers of seasoning into it. Cooking with lots of oil will tend to do this naturally though as you cook.

    • After cooking I just soak it in soapy water for 5min and then clean it quickly with a relatively smooth metal scourer and then heat up on stove for a couple minutes to ensure it's dry. I have no idea if my 'seasoning' is gone but the surface is completely not stick now but was not non-stick when I first got it.

      • Yeah mild soap doesn't remove the seasoning.

      Wow, way to make a simple job difficult. One of the great benefits of cast iron is it doesn't need to be babied.

      For the last 15 years I've been using a nylon brush with regular washing up detergent on the cooking surface. Maybe half the time I'll heat on the stove and give a light coat of oil but haven't noticed much difference doing the oil immediately before the next use. Some of my cast iron pans have some rust underneath but it's going to be a looooong time before any of that rust goes past the surface.

      For anyone else overly paranoid about using detergent on cast iron please do your own research. Seasoning on cast iron is polymerised oil and can't be removed with detergent.

        I cancel it straight away with a reason like delivery time from the options.

        However if the item ends up being late I never complain as to not draw attention to myself. I have been doing it for about a year without issue.
