Office Applications/Browsing Laptop for MIL $500- $700

MIL needs a new laptop for her tutoring business. She'll basically just use it for office applications and learning games as well as typical browsing/youtube.

I'm thinking:

  • 256gb - 512gb SSD
  • 500GB - 1TB HDD
  • Preferably 16gb RAM but in her price range, more likely 8GB.
  • integrated GPU is fine
  • size and weight is not an issue for her

Not sure if this is possible within her budget, but she refuses to go higher on her budget.

TIA OzBargainers!

I would probably say one of these from TA's previous deals - not sure when the next deal is though

    • Thanks for the link! Will definitely keep an eye out for something similar.

  • Does she need the mechanical drive?
I'd go with just the SSD, I can't think of too many laptops that would come with both in the low cost price range. If she really needs the space, get her an external hard drive.

    • Good advice. I'll definitely drop the HDD, and suggest just getting an external.

  • I would get a smaller SSD if that means I could have a bigger RAM.

If size and weight do not matter, would she consider getting a desktop instead?

    • She has a seperated office in the backyard, and likes to bring the laptop in and out during her tutoring sessions. I suggested a desktop, but she's not fond.

    • That's a great option! Warranty becomes void after upgrading, so i'd have to ask my MIL if she'd be happy with that.

      • That budget is more than big enough. What Iangh posted is good I reckon. Also does warranty get void with upgrading? I don't think so…. Maybe I am wrong though, you got a source?

Upgrade referring to changing RAM in this case, nothing severe.

        • I was reading through Acer's general warranty PDF, and it states under their exclusions list, if upon inspection peripherals or hardware not supplied by Acer.

Wasn't entirely sure how to interpret that.

          • @Frayin: Just put the original RAM back should you need to do a warranty claim

      • I would check with Acer Australia to see what they think. I think the upgrades make it into a nice bargain and would have gone ahead and done it anyway. They left the holes to be filled: increase in ram from 4 to 12; an extra SSD.

I was planning to follow Mike's videos for the upgrades.
