Extra RAM for Dell G5

I recently bought a Dell G5 PC from this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/540394
Comes with 16GB RAM. I would like to upgrade to 32GB (and possibly as high as 64GB in the future)
What is the best way to achieve this?

If I buy 2x8GB sticks I will fill all the RAM slots and further upgrades will mean full RAM replacement.
Would it be more prudent to buy 2x16GB sticks for a total of 48GB of RAM with a less costly future upgrade cost? Will this even work?
What considerations do I need to take re timings, speed, channels and compatability?

Comments

  • This looks to be the Dell G5?

Do more with more memory: Up to 32GB Dual Channel DDR4 at 2666MHz RAM ensures overall advanced performance during intensive gaming.

Dell also have their own instructions on how to choose/upgrade RAM

    • Correct. Thanks for those links :) Whilst the marketing description implies 32gb max, the product manual specifies 64gb as max, and 4 slots.

  • +1

2X16 and 2X8 will work fine. That's what I run.

But do you need that much ram?

You'd probably be better off buying tighter 2X16GB sticks with much tighter timing/speed and take out the slower 2666 ram, unless you absolutely need the 48GB.

EDIT: I assume your board has 4 slots…

    • Nice, has 4 slots according to both Crucial and the Service Manual. Good to know that will probably work.
I don't need 48GB of RAM. But I need to run 5 VMs concurrently.
Also if I add 2x16GB sticks like this, what will be the advantage to removing the slower existing 2x8GB?

  • I think it's only got 2 slots for RAM. You can confirm in the service manual, with dell, or checking out a detailed review.

To the previous question, do you actually need that much RAM?

    • I don't know if I need that much RAM. I do think the current 16gb is pushing it for what I want to do (running multiple vms).
I would like to upgrade to 32gb, but leave the option open for 64gb down the road.
      MB has 4 slots.

      • Ok, thought you were talking about the G5 laptop.

      • +1

I'd add 2x16GB now so that aren't having to get the whole lot again if you ever upgrade to 64GB. Be

  • Looking to do something similar with my G5, but I know very little about RAM upgrades. Can I just buy any set of 2 x 16gb DDR4 ram, or are there other aspects specific to the motherboard, etc that I need to factor in?
