Help Me Pick a VPN Provider + Seedbox

I've been tossing up between Surfshark and Express VPN. I have seen 90% discounts on Cashrewards. Nord is the current one on special but Surfshark goes on sale for the same discount. Main purpose is to torrent and maintain a nice ratio on private trackers. I'll be using an OpenVPN docker container to route my docker containers through it.

I'm sceptical about Nord VPN because they have been hacked previously and failed to notify users. Also their heavy marketing has turned me off.

I'm currently using Torguard but its part of 5 eyes and want to move away from it. I'm happy to pay yearly upfront or two if the price is right.

I can't decide and its hurting my brain! At this stage I'm leaning towards Surfshark.

Seedbox, I'm looking at moving my freenas server to a seedbox to leave it on 24/7. I was looking at a Hetzner storage box. I'm weighing up whether to just keep my current setup or move to a seedbox and sftp from home to the seedbox to grab the files.

  • Express VPN.
It's expensive, but offers the most value.

    • I like the split tunnelling feature. This article is one of the better ones I've read. Most of them are written to generate affiliate link revenue.

  • Surfshark has been good for me, rate over NordVPN. As for a seedbox, I rent a dedicated server from OneProvider in France, 1TB 1Gbps. Set it up with Debian and installed rutorrent. Happy days. Ends up about $13 a month.

    • I'll take a look at OneProvider. Which torrent client are you using on debian? Rutorrent? How are you transferring from your SB to your pc?

      • Debian and rutorrent. When setting up the ruttorent, it punched out an IP and port and I've hung onto those since. Cuteftp was my favorite. Using Filezilla on the Mac to FTP at the moment. Ftp from seedbox to pc.

  • I'm happy with Surfshark but I don't use it to watch Netflix. It hides your IP address, the kill switch works, doesn't seem to slow things too much. That's all I want. And they are very quick to respond to any problems.

  • One positive note about Surfshark is that their support is great. Also another thing to consider is the number of locations:

    ExpressVPN - 94 countries
    Surfshark - 63 countries
    NordVPN - 59 countries

This may not matter to you so much, but NordVPN for example doesn't cover Philippines which is good for Spotify deals.

    • Nord is probably my last option. How are speeds on Surfshark?

  • Suggested PIA Private Internet Access

PIA if you can wait for the 3-5y discount.

    • PIA has a good rep too. 3-5 years might be a bit too long to commit to but thanks for the suggestion.

  • Don't seedboxes have their own VPN option?

Been using these guys for a while.

  • Thank you everyone for your input. I've decided to go with Surfshark. $11 for 3 years for arguably the second best vpn service from this deal. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/545929 I have it setup on my ubunut headless server. I've decided to use my freenas rather than pay for a VPS/seedbox.
