  • It's good that you poor buggers living at Sydney's northern beaches get such good grocery deals!!!
I'm sure all the westies are very happy for you… :)
You'd be a mug not to take advantage offers like this wouldn't you.
Is this a regular thing with the local Coles, as I noticed another post last week?
Does anyone else get offers like this from their local Coles, 'cause we don't get these in BrisVegas.

    Cheers,
    Live Long and Prosper.

    • I think it might be a new store, as I have never heard of anything resembled "5% off everything" near where I live, Sydney Eastern suburbs. It's more like "5% or more expensive than everyone else!" around here…

  • I live in Mona Vale and know a few of the managers @ Coles.

Sales haven't been to great lately.

Mainly due to a number of factors:

    • General economy

    • Strong competition from the the nearby newly-refurbished Woolworths (and new carpark)

    • And soon to open Aldi (going in where the current video-ezy is)

It's probably affecting sales a bit.

  • I was told that Coles were not making a go of it ,(after about 2 years), and that they were going to close Mona Vale because of Newport store opening soon, but if that was so ,why would they be promoting the store

  • You're correct Danceman, Mona Vale Coles is closing (when the newport store opens up) and Officeworks is moving into that space.

Aldi moves into where Video Ezy is currently.

I thought there would be enough customers for all the major supermarkets to be in mona vale (since warriewood "mac-mansion" valley is increasing in size and the land development starting up at ingleside and surrounding area etc).

Not sure, why they are doing this promotion, since they are going to be closing this particular store in i'm guessing 6 months - maybe to just maintain their local customer base on the peninsula.

  • Hey Lucky, Did you hear that Tandy were moving in to the Coles site as well as Officeworks? That baffles me a bit because Tandy is Woolworths owned and Officeworks are Coles Group owned. Apparently Terry White is closing as well and Priceline are moving in there

  • Newport Coles is opening in Feb/March 09.
A Proposed Woolies 3000 sqm site at 343 Barrenjoey rd Newport (200 metres up the road) is on the agenda.
A joint venture with Pittwater Council to amalgamate the carparks in Foamcrest and rezone the site for commercial as part of the Woolies deal.

Yes there were 3 supermarkets in Newport at some stage all adding to a total of around 1200 sqm.

Newport is now faced with potentially 4600 sqm of pure supermarket trading space for a total of around 9000 residents.

For a comparison, look at Lane Cove. There are 26,000 residents in the area and only one supermarket (Coles) with a total retail area of only 2500 sqm.

The proposed Newport Masterplan will lose it's community feel and village atmosphere as it hopes to achieve. The contentious area that needs to be rezoned amalgamating the two car parks and the commercial area is evident, but not for another supermarket to take occupancy there. This will have a severe impact on local businesses as the commercial stretch on Barrenjoey Rd is limited.

Additionally, a recent article dated August 8th 2008 in The Manly Daily refers specifically to this particular proposal.
