Keeping Bigpond Email Address after Moving from Telstra to Aussie Broadband

quick question just moved from Telstra to ABB this morning but forgot about what will happen to our bigpond email account that we have had for 13+ year

I have seen that you can do the $79 a year for the email but seeing as we still have our foxtel through Telstra would we need to pay the $79 fee or will it be included because we still have the foxtel service?

    $79/year still applies.

Maybe buy a year's worth of bigpond email, and buy a domain for cheap and start letting people know for the next 12 months that that's your new email address for the future (you can redirect the domain's email to your ABB email, and whatever future ISP/mail provider you have in future)

    • but if we still have the foxtel service active will we need to pay the $79?

      • Pretty sure the email is linked to the Bigpond/Telstra Internet service you had active with them prior to the move to ABB. Email is linked to an Internet service rather than a general Telstra service (in your case, a Foxtel service charged to your Telstra account).

You could try your luck with Telstra livechat, but if the email address is important (since you've used it for such a long time), probably best to keep it for a year and transition off it, just to be sure.

Porkbun.com or namesilo.com are good places to grab a domain name

but do I need to do anything to be able to have it free for the year?

@eckers19: Why don't you call Telstra instead of asking a random on ozbargain.

          • @eckers19: If you're worrying about the $79/cost more than keeping the email address, it seems like it's not that crucial to you whether you keep it or not.

I would still suggest buying a new domain to avoid this problem in the future.

  • I have Kogan internet but still use my Bigpond email address for free.

I have 2x Telstra Mobile SIM only plans and Foxtel from Telstra.

I called and asked them to ensure my email remains active, as I am using my mobile data to access my Bigpond email.

I havent had Telstra internet for about 3 years now…..no issue, no extra fees.

    • so if I would just have the foxtel should I call up to see if it can remain active without the fee?

      • I would give it a shot.

I would let them know that you are still a Telstra customer.

Hope it works out for you.

        • ok thanks

The login for my bigpond email is still active 10+ years after I moved away from them - just checked a second ago and it all still works..

    • do you still have any services with them?

      • I moved from Telstra to Aldi in March. No more active services with them. A kind user here (Telstra employee) actually told me my Bigpond email is still active.

Not that it's any use, I've had a personalised domain for my emails for nigh on 10 years.

        • do you know what users name is so I can ask him about this?

            @eckers19: It was me

Usually when Telstra disconnects an internet service, they very rarely actually remove the Bigpond email. Which is actually kind of dodgy, because technically the email is meant to be $79 per year after the first year

Jump on MyTelstra app and start a messaging chat with someone, or send me your billing number (starts with 2000) and I’ll have a look

            • @87percent: will pm you tomm

            • @87percent: Hey do you think this will still work now? I’m really looking to leave Telstra. But I’ve had the emails for many years. Thank you

      • do you still have any services with them?

        2 mobile phones, that's it.

        • I still have foxtel (via telstra ) with them

  • can confirm that telstra don't deactivate your bigpond email, still get spam mail from the bigpond in the inbox everyweek
