Audio Technica ATH-PDG1 Open Back Gaming Headset - $101 (Was $169) @ JB Hi-Fi

350

Purchased these recently for almost full price. They're an excellent set of headphones for gaming, especially being open back which is nearly impossible to find at this price point.

Review (Thanks to Gfunk Zero's comment): https://majorhifi.com/audio-technica-ath-pdg1-review/

Closed back version (ATH-PG1) also on sale here (Thanks to Bold Eagle's comment): https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/audio-technica-ath-pg1-pr…

Next model up (ATH-ADG1X) also on sale for $179 down from $299. Thanks to BluBlu for finding that.

    • Good find. Also highlights how rare open-back gaming headsets are at this price point when the new models RRP is $299.

    • +1

The ADG1X are an amazing set of headphones.

    • Tempted… stocked by 6th July and $5 delivery

    • +1

it’s not a newer model, it’s the next model up …

      • This is correct, my mistake.

    • +1

Link goes to 404. Looks like it's sold out :(

      • Still works for me, possibly went down briefly.

  • +4

Is open back like.. So you can hear the missus?

    • +1

Yep, you can get the close back one If you prefer😉

    • open back are much less fatiguing during long covid work from home conferencing sessions …..own a pair and wouldn’t use close back except on public transport or if family members are home …..

  • +1

I need to sell something now to get this…smh

  • Just curious… does the mic pick up voices from the headphones since they are open back?

    • Shouldn't pick up sound from the headphones but there's still some sound bleed

    • +1

no …..the microphone in on a boom, and the ear cups project any leakage side ways …..they are brilliant.

  • Does anyone know how this compares to the ATH-AD900x?
I use a pair of ATH-AD900x on my gaming computer, but the rubber/plastic on the cord started breaking apart/crumbling last year after ~6ish years of ownership, the 50cm starting from where the cord meets the headphone down is basically all Gaffa tape now, as I've been patching it up as more of it crumbled over the last year or so.

Tldr; my old ATH-AD900x still work, but may be on there way out, is this a worthwhile?

    • I read somewhere that the ADG1x headset is about equivalent to the AD700x - AD900x https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/audio-technica-ath-adg1x-….

The PDG1 would be a downgrade over the 900x for sure.

    • Audio technica replace the cable into the driver for $70 inc return postage (for my 700), get your 900 fixed and enjoy ….

    • Thanks for the feedback. I'll definately have to look into getting the cable repaired.

  • Anyone used these for office based calls (zoom, teams, etc)??

    • +4

Yep, I use it on a daily basis at the moment, on teams. Ive also used it on WebEx and zoom, no issues.

      Sound is perfect.
Microphone I’ll say is also perfect.

There’s a mute slider on the cable which is super handy when needing to mute yourself quickly rather than fumbling around to find the teams/Skype/zoom app’s mute button

  • These or HyperX Cloud II for gaming/Videoconferences?
Is the USB connection/7.1 "surround" a real benefit on the HyperX?

    • +2

I have both the Hyperx Cloud II and the next model up from these (ATH-ADG1X). Keep in mind the Clouds are closed back unless you swap out to the included velour pads which makes them semi-open. The USB sound card is good if you don't have a decent audio solution or are using a laptop. Audio quality will be similar between the two so you just have to concern yourself with looks, price and comfort.

    • +1

The biggest difference will be open vs closed back. I personally hate using closed back. I like to hear my own voice clearly, hearing things around me (e.g. partner on the couch), staying cooler for longer, not to mention the larger sound stage the open back provide.

      • Thanks to you both for the tips.

I wasn't sure about open and closed back, but I think from your description I would prefer the open back.
They will mostly be on a Dell gaming desktop PC, and maybe sometimes on laptop for work (where the audio is not such a concern).

      • When you use the velour ear cups on it (I have them) you can hear your voice properly. Only time you can't hear is when there's other stuff blasting into your ear, but same goes for open back.

  • I was looking at these. Than I saw this video and it kind of put me off: https://youtu.be/Hb_FBy_akeQ?t=213

Anyone know another other really good open back headphones ~$300 for gaming / music ?

    • +1

      Mic: Massdrop/Sennheiser PC37x ~$200
No Mic: Massdrop/Sennheiser HD58X ~$270, can be found for less on sale

I own the Massdrop HD6XX and the Sennheiser HD599s. Never looked back.

      • Thanks for that, I'm looking at the HD58X or the HD599, if you had to pick one for gaming/movies/music which would you go for?

    • FYI there's no popping noise at all using my mute control on the ATH-PDG1. Ditto the volume control wheel, mines responsive the whole way. Maybe he has a defective unit?

      • I can't say about the popping noise when muting, but my unit's volume wheel behaves the same way as the video. I ended up taping over the volume wheel as even a small knock of the volume wheel would drop the volume a significant amount. I'm using both a keyboard with a volume scroll wheel and a Sound BlasterX G6 so volume control is within easy reach and not an issue.

        • Oh it's absolutely touchy and I can completely understand why you would tape over it, but mine effects the volume the whole time, unlike his which had no effect at all for 95% of the wheel scroll.

$200 (from $300). Very similar to the PC37X @nairajun recommended.

  • What happens when it is awaiting stock when you check out? Risk of a refund?

  • I've had these for years, they're great and comfy and I use them all the time but wow they let in a lot of external noise (even for open backs). Not recommended for noisy environments or if you're using headphones for music to block out distractions - a closed back pair will be a better choice.

That said, if you want headphones but also want to hear what's going on around you - these are perfect

  • +1

They also have the closed back of the same model on special, maybe you want to update the OP?

  • Clicking on go to deal shows 169 ? 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • A couple others have mentioned this happening for them too, but it still works fine for me.

      • +1

Weird, I tried two different computers plus my mobile, even incognito mode, all showed $169

        • Oh apologies, you're right! I was thinking of the 404 error others were getting… I'll update the post, thanks.
