Ryzen 3600 + Tomahawk Max

This is probably the most solid budget AM4 pairing so I'm really after this configuration.

  • I recently got a separate 3600 (Amazon AU $273) + B450 Mortar Max (Centre Com $179). Worth checking perhaps?

    • Cheers I've been looking at both. The VRM heatsink on Mortar max isn't as good unfortunately. I'm trying to future proof an upgrade path for 4900. Also think Mortar doesn't have a USB C port

      • I have not much experience in building a PC. This is my first build :)
I think Mortar might have: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450M-MORTAR-MAX/Specificati… It says 1(Gen2, Type C)under USB 3.2 Ports.

      • This is how it would look like: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/D2MYGc

        Would love your feedback.

        • I reckon go with a better ram if you can. The CL speed on that one is not that great. Go with a lower one.

I'm in the camp that the PSU is although important is not worth spending $180 on.

Not sure if you're 1660 is the best option. You can find a used 1070 or 1660 ti fit around 350 (got mine last week off gumtree for 300).

Also maybe go with the tomahawk just so you're super site it'll handle up to around 4700 or so easily (maybe even 4900 with heavy airflow)

          • @er1992: Ah, thanks for this! That was the best price I could find on 32 GB RAM without breaking my bank. Let's see how they perform for my needs (image and video editing, I am not a gamer)

Yeah I felt that I ended up spending quite much on PSU. What cheaper version will you suggest? I bought from Amazon AU and could potentially return it. Being a first timer, I think fully modular would be better?

For my needs, OzB suggested going for NVidia. Can't go for second hand in that I don't know a thing about GPUs.

I was also confused between the two mobos - I think what drove me towards this was 2 m.2 slots which I might end up using at some point.

            • @tanmay375: I guess frequency matters more for you than CL. Without going in to too much detail, since CL is only the first column load latency, you won't have that too much rather you'll have a bunch of data first where you only load once (CL) then read the whole thing (frequency).

              https://www.gamingscan.com/psu-hierarchy/

I'm not really that well versed in PSUs but You can use sites like this. Should be able to safely go down to tier 4 and still be totally fine. I guess go with fully modular if you care about tidiness.

Anytime I want to get a used GPU or CPU, i just get it installed and run a benchmark & burner and check the scores against others online. Should give you a good idea.

Boards are also almost identical, most importantly tomahawk has a slightly better VRM heatsink

  • Rumour is Ryzen 4XXX desktop will be next year so 3600 is still a good time to buy. I paid about $488 for my 3600+B450 Pro Carbon just before the lockdowns so that's a decent price especially for the MAX version. I'd expect the MAX motherboards will be easier to upgrade to 4XXX Ryzen due to the 32mb BIOS.

AMD have confirmed that Ryzen 4xxx/Zen 3 is releasing in 2020.

    • I'm pretty non max would not be supported on zen3. It's gonna be easy too difficult to get the 16mb flash ROM updated for them. Max versions have 32mb ROMs

Oh haha you already mentioned the ROM size. I would read the comment before putting mine up 🤦‍♂️ how do you delete comments lol?

      • Hey, I’m not too familiar with bios flashing, but is it confirmed the tomahawk max will support zen 3? I’m just looking at buying a 3600 with the tomahawk max and if there’s a path to the 4000 series available, that’ll probably finally let me make up my mind.

        • All B450 will support Zen 3 now as AMD backpedalled on the decision. But I would personally be more comfortable with MAX variant as they may have an easier time supporting the new CPUs, although I'd be very surprised if any B450 has issues (especially MSI ones). Still it's hard to say at this point. If you have the money to spare the X570 Tomahawk gets excellent reviews and will have no issues supporting Zen 3.

  • You sure PMON20 coupon going to work?
I don’t want to sign up for nothing and find out it doesn’t apply to this….

    P.S I’ve already used my 30 day trial :(

P.P.S…..solid deal. I am getting it, so should you.
Top motherboard and best value cpu.

    • Where abouts are you located? I can potentially buy 2 sets and send you one of them if no one in your state sees this and offers their code. I'm in SA

      • VIC.
I am happy to sign up, as long as it works.
Does it work for you when you enter the code?

  • Thanks for the post OP, really tempted to buy it right now.

are the rest of the parts fine for the Ryzen 3600 and Tomahawk Max?

    • Yup they are all good to go. You might want to get an NVME drive though. Less cables, way faster, much neater look. I highly highly recommend getting an NVME drive.

      Something like this: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/pxKcCJ/crucial-p1-1tb-m2…

      • Thanks heaps! Will look into getting one of those

    • I'd personally cut the PSU budget and go for a better RAM. That cl16 isn't ideal for gaming. Maybe 16 would be ok if it was >3600. Also there's plenty of nvme deals going around for 1TB at around $170. 500GB is gonna full up quick. Btw don't get the shitty crucial NVMEs. They're DRAMless ughhh.

Solid build otherwise. Check if you can grab a good deal for a wraith prism. Got myself one off Facebook brand new for $20

      • thanks a lot! will get a 1 tb nvme

  • I'd buy, but toma only has 2 PCI x16. I have a 10gig sfp+ adapter, plus SAS storage adapter, so ill have to splash out.
