WELCOME-T8S3

For those of you who were sad to miss the previous Shun deals, do not worry because ya knife enthusiast boi found something good. Some of you may have heard of Tojiro/Fujitora as I have been a proponent for that brand for a few years, but now I found you something better:

Yaxell is a very well known knife brand in Japan, older than Global and make high quality hand-crafted japanese knives. I noticed Kitchen Warehouse started stocking these a few years ago. The Mon line is quite similar to the Tojiro/Fujitora, however I believe that the handle is more comfortable, and the fit and finish is a lot better (edges on my Tojiro are still a bit sharp for my liking). The Zen line would be ideal for those of you wanting something a little more "special". Without needing to be said, either are better than Global knives.

These knives are handmade in Seki, Japan.

  • Thanks OP.

I'm unfamiliar with the brand, but with a Rockwell rating of 61 degrees, they appear decent and your thorough description is appreciated.

The Zen range look particularly impressive, but I think that both of the Mon range in your link come with a knife block rather than the magnetic stand.

Wonder if these were originally on the 30% off ebay sale until Kitchen Warehouse pulled all their listings yesterday?

    • I had a look but I don't think they had anything from yaxell there. If they did, it was full price. Their Amazon store has these products at rrp.

Yes you are right, Mon comes with a block.
Yaxell has about as much exposure as tojiro, not many people in aus know about them. I only know about them because of burrfection

They were on Kitchen Warehouse's ebay site yesterday, with the $467 Yaxell Zen 6pc Knife Block Set available for $327. Ouch…

I suspect KW hadn't priced a lot of products correctly for the 30% off, given how switftly they pulled everything from the sale, but I'd still feel compelled to test these knives on a finger if I knew I'd overspent by $125 on what I could have landed them for…

        • When I clicked the deal and clicked other items, these knives weren't up there interestingly.
I actually bit the bullet and bought the 4pc Zen…deal was too good to ignore. I paid $130 for my kasumi and these are equivalent

          • @KnifeEnthusiastBoi: I had the same issues trying to search their range yesterday - lot's weren't showing up, especially if you used the search link on the 30% promo page. But if you copied and pasted the product name from their own webpage, items would show up and be eligible for the 30% discount. I got the 5 piece Shun block and would have grabbed more if they hadn't pulled the deal.

The Yaxell Zen range look beautiful and that magnetic holder gives you room to add 2-3 existing favourites or new knives to your 3 Zen pieces. Your greatest challenge may be finding appropriate knives to add which don't look like poor cousins next to your Zens. If you already have or can find a suitable 19-22cm bread knife and 15-17cm Utility or Santoku knife, you'll never want for another knife in your life.

Nice work - enjoy your purchase.

    • They are legit mainly oem manufacturer, here is some youtube video about them

  • I ordered one. Good reviews and looks to be good quality.

I got a non stainless steel knife in Japan for about $140 but it's not as nice as these. It's sharp but. I need to polish it because it's discoloured and slightly rusted.

    • Make sure you oil your carbon steel blades and dry them thoroughly! Patina is okay, but rust needs to be taken off. Try to avoid cutting acidics with it

    Just got these too… cheers.
Use promo code NAKED15 for $15 off.
Edit. OPs code is the same… forget mine

  • Thanks OP, was actually looking a getting the Mon chef knife on amazon for $123. Purchased the Mon 4piece set for $182 instead. Now i'm regretting i didn't get the Zen. Is there much of a difference besides looks? (is it worth the extra $60)

    • Cutting performance will be more or less the same. Difference is mostly with looks, the damascus style cladding you could "argue" (but be very hard to prove) that it allows a bit more flexibility.

The hammered finish may allow the sliced vegetables to come off easier. Cannot confirm, because i havent received mine to give it a test run, but based on what others say thats what it does.

Core steels are the same. So where the rubber hits the road (or where the metal hits the board?) is the same. Meaning that they should cut exactly the same. Handles are also made the same, and they take the same amount of care sculpting the handles regardless which line of knives you buy.

$60 more for me was a small price to pay if it meant i would get a magnetic board and damascus finish. I paid $130 in the past for my kasumi knife chefs knife which is similar to the Zen.

    • How are you finding them?

      • I ended up calling the store and purchased the ZEN - will be picking them up over the weekend. The Mon feels great on hand but obviously i have not used them as i'll be refunding them.

        Thanks for your feedback thought!

  • Just tried ordering Zen 4pc Knife Block and it's now OOS

    • The 7pc still pretty worth if you need a bread knife!

Otherwise the Mon is pretty good too.

      • Already have more knives than I need. Like the Zen and magnetic holder. A 25cm Zen would be enough if it was available (at the right price)

    Thanks OP.
Ended up just getting a Yaxell santoku 16.5cm which should do me.

Didn’t know a about the Yaxell previously so thanks for bringing it to my attention!

    • Do enjoy. Mine just arrived and its a real beauty!

Mine just arrived. Its a beauty!
    Pic here

    • Wow. That looks like a truly stunning piece. Enjoy - and watch your fingers!

I'm still debating whether to get them as well - only put off by the 12.5cm Santoku in the 4 piece set, which I suspect would be too small for my main intended usage of slicing vegetables.

The 6 piece Zen set looks perfect, swapping out the 12.5cm Santuko for the full sized 16.5cm version and adding a 12cm Utility and 23cm serrated bread knife - albeit isn't as great value as the 4 piece Zen deal.

All these OzBargain knife deals have me in a spin. The hammered Damascus finish looks amazing and the hardness of the steel and great reviews have me dreaming of a knife I'd never heard of before your post.

Can you can us a brief review of the 4 piece Zen set?

I think the Santoku would be "OK". If I was chopping vegetables bigger than the santoku could handle, I would be using the Chef's knife anyway. Arguably, you ought to be doing the same if you were chopping bigger vegetables, but then again it comes to personal preference. To my uses, the 12.5cm Santoku is just a token knife which my future partner might want to use. I mainly only use the Chef knife for about 80% of all my work, and yanagiba for the remaining 20% which is just sashimi. I rarely ever pick up any other shaped knife unless i feel my chef knife is a bit too dull, or i need to peel something (paring knife).

Here is how I justified my purchase (even though I didn't technically need another knife).
The magnetic board is an adequate storage solution that could fit those and some additional knives.
The average cost per knife (taking out the cost of the board) is about $80 each - about 50-75% what I would be happy to pay for the caliber of knife
        I don't have a decent paring knife.

The Zen is now sold out online, but can be bought from local stores if they have stock. The Box Hill one is apparently in stock of the Zen 4pc.

I would be glad to do a review for you, but in my opinion i would highly encourage you to buy either the Zen or the Mon. The caliber of knife you are paying for is extremely good value (Having now seen the knife in the flesh, I am convinced its about the same performance as my Kasumi knife, which i paid ~$130 for about 5 years ago. Now the Kasumi is worth about $160-180, which makes this even more of a steeal). Tojiro on amazon is retailing for around $150. I would buy the Mon over a Tojiro.

Please PM me tomorrow and if you don't hear from me about a review by Monday, I'd say just go for it (if you need a knife).
See the single Mon chef knife deal on Amazon I posted here if you just need one.

          Cheers for the detailed info.

My thinking is similar to yours, although I'm going through a purple patch with my fluted Santoku's lately, so I think I'll miss it more than you. That said, I've never had or tried anything smaller than a 15cm Santoku, so maybe a smaller one could be niche purchase. The magnetic block looks good and is part of the allure - here's hoping the magnets are up to the job…

My local store has some of the 4 piece Zen in stock, so I think I'll stick my head in tomorrow and have a feel. If it feels half as good in my hand as it looks in your picture, I think I'm gonna need a bigger knife drawer! Thanks again.

          • @UncleRico: No problem. I have relatively small hands, the handle is chunkier than the Tojiro DP and feels better to me.
I really hope you do enjoy checking it out, as soon as I took it out of the box I was glad I got it.

        First impressions:

Just cut up some chinese cabbages today, nothing special.
Knife is insanely sharp, truly sharpened well professionally, VG10 gives the cutting performance I am all too familiar with.
No effort required, the weight of the knife was almost enough to cut through each stem of the cabbages.
Beautiful design and construction, feels great in the hand, handle is almost identical to the Kasumi.
Don't yet have an opportunity to test the "non-stick"ness due to the hammered pattern.

All in all, was it worth it? I don't regret it at all!
