Purchase a Used Holden Astra VXR?

I noticed a used 2015 Holden Astra VXR with 52k Kms on sale for $15,000.

What are people's thoughts on purchasing this vehicle in the context of Holden pulling out of Oz?

I am able to perform basic maintenance such as changing engine oil/filter and brake pads/rotors. I do mostly highway driving.

I'm not familiar with the longevity of Holden vehicles or if there are known mechanical issues with this model/brand, so would be grateful for some expert advice.

Thanks in advance!

    Just don't is my opinion.

Holden isn't making spares for long either (Officially 10 years but there is rumor mill of less than 5).

Only morons purchased Astras new. Second hand? That requires a new word.

    Don't touch Euro Holden/Opels

    • Why?

It's just an accepted truism: never buy a Holden model that ends in "A".

Other reasons include second-rate sensors and their bloody-minded insistence on placing the ECU in the engine bay where it cops a lot of heat.

    • No cruise control tho

The OP is looking to buying a Toy Racer, not a mundane shopping cart.

I wouldn't, even if they were staying :)

You buying this used Astra won't cause Holden to not withdraw.

The decision has been made and GM is just working out how little to pay for the exit.

The Opel/Holden OPC/VXR is a very decent hot hatch, good looks, great engine, locking diff, handles very well and the exhaust sounds amazing in the cabin. I eyed one up back in 2013 but ended up getting a Focus ST instead. They're a good car and at 15k second hand you're getting a heap of performance for the money. As others have said I'd be staying away due no more Holden, you would still be able to source parts for Europe/UK, but it's not cheap and can be a pain.

If you're after a second hand hot hatch of similar age/money, check out a Megane RS or a Focus ST. If the Astra interests you go check one out, just keep in mind that it could be a pain in future to source bits.

Op the negatives my comment above is getting is most certainly from people that have never driven an OPC/VXR (or know nothing about it) and are judging the car based on earlier model Astras which had a bunch of issues.

Nah…you just seem to push Euro shit-boxes all the time

Oh diddums, bit of a euro hater. Thanks for reaffirming my earlier point.

I was a mechanic until 2012. Worked on a few Astras and I remember them being a a bit unpleasant to work on. Saw some timing belts fail prematurely which bent valves. I'd advise against buying it. Buying a second hand euro car usually isn't worth it. Get Japanese or Korean especially if you're gonna put a lot of k's on it.

Nice looking car but it is GM product, who know what will break. I looked at them as I wanted a cheap hot hatch, went Kia instead, love it

Well I’m going to against the trend because I’d happily drive a good condition VXR, if I got it for free…
    I’ll show myself out.

  • Don't forget that when the seller says the car is "fully loaded" they mean weapons hot as opposed to
    nicely kitted out.

    Run, run away

  • I have had the same idea some time ago for a toy car. But put off by the air suspension. These things are not so reliable, and spare parts? - only VXR run on magnetic ride.

  • The issue is not Holden

    Its the Astra

Terrible resale value for good reasons

    Stay well away

  • Blue one, plate 1EIM549 in WA? Used to be ours. Stay away, major gearbox issues

  • For those saying "you won't get parts" you probably won't have the car by the time the planned support period is over, as with many cars that the importer no longer supports them, you will find that someone will be importing parts and there may be a forum for the model where people exchange "Howtos" and sell parts,

If the model is unreliable there should be a supply of them at wreckers for second hand parts, all you need to determine is whether the model is reliable enough for you and what your willing to spend keeping it on the road.

    • Wonder what the cost of Insurance for Full Comp Cover would be and how easy/difficult parts would be in the event of a Bingle.

  • Holden… who?
The brand is DEAD…. a lot of concern regarding maintenance etc….

BUT… that puts you in a much better bargaining position.

Holdens have been around for decades and there is ample parts if not new, floating around in car part yards.

Mechanics love working on them bc they a simple.

Bargain the price… play the game… express doubts (they know) offer 12k … yes that's right 12k and even walk away.

  • Commiserations…. 🤭🤣
