What is the simplest way to have my new phone with my old phone number when on two pre-paid plans?

Hey guys,
This is hard to explain, but I hope it makes sense.

Currently I have the following -
New phone - $65 a month post-paid with JB Hifi (Telstra) - new 2 year contract
Old phone - $129 a month post-paid with Telstra - finishes Sept 4 in a few months

Currently I just put my old sim in the new phone and I am paying for both plans which I accept and understand that I am paying the higher price until Sept.

Ideally, I would like to have my new phone with my old phone number, and then just cancel the old plan in September when the contract finishes.

What is the simplest way to get to preferred solution WITHOUT moving to another provider for a month?

Hope you guys can help.

  • I did this with Telstra, I signed up to a new plan with Telstra, then called up Telstra and cancelled my old plan, then asked them to reinstate my old number on my new plan. Took about 30 min.

The person in the phone said that by law they can’t give your old number away for 6 months, it’s your property. How true that is, I have no idea.

    • These are both pre-paid plans, with one expiring in Sept. Telstra said they can't swap due to them being pre-paid.
I just signed up with the new $65 plan a few weeks ago.
      Very confusing scenario.

      • Generally the number goes into quarantine for 6 mths in where no one is allowed to take that number.

You will find however that not all phone consultants will do this number swap plan and cancellation. This is because people where signing up to new plans to receive gift cards (JB, GG) or to take advantage of promotions for “new customers”. They then have their old number disconnected and re instated onto the new plan.

Store employees will Always refuse to do this as it is handed down from management.

    • technically the number should go into quarantine (so no one else can get it assigned) for a certain period of time. This is because if your number has been fraudulently ported to another provider, it can be reinstated.

    • Telstra employees are generally lying scum over the phone or in person. I've come to this conclusion after many years of lies.

are you sure they arent on post paid???

never heard of pre paid on that high.

Been out of mobile for a while but most providers allow you to exit you contract with 3 months to go.

Or you can pay out your existing contract

  • New phone - $65 a month pre-paid with Telstra - new 2 year contract

Is that the jb hifi / TGG plan with new cheap/free phone?

Prepaid is usually contract free, thus can leave whenever.

I have a feeling you have postpaid and prepaid mixed up.

    • My bad - it is Post Paid.
      I will update the post.

I signed up for the $65 a month at JB Hifi with the $500 offer on a new phone (Pixel 4 XL).

Your new phone isn't locked to any sim, so you can put your old sim into new phone. Unless what you mean is you want your old number to be transfered/replace your new number that is under the new jb hifi plan?

        • I am already using the new phone with the old sim, so that part is good.

          Yes -
I want my old number on the new JB Hifi plan.

Thanks for taking the time to understand.
It is quite confusing and hard to explain.

  • I recall someone posting on here that they did somethign similar and then the next bill, all the discounts got removed

  • Telstra have the capacity to transfer your old number to the JB HiFi plan, once the former's contract has expired. But, if the rep is doing their job properly, they won't do it for you, because you're just trying to workaround the terms and conditions on the JB HiFi deal (new number, or port in from provider running on the Optus or Vodafone networks).

Thank you all for your input, much appreciated.
I visited a Telstra store in person and sorted it.

    Summary -
Visited them asking them to help me save money.
In the end, I paid out the contract for the old mobile and he assigned my old number to the new $65 plan.
I am happy with this as I keep my old number and will be saving heaps in the future.

    Thanks again
