Big W: Apple 'in Ear' Headphones (Includes Mic etc) Was $117 Now $37

650

I was in Big W today looking at headphones and the guy at the counter showed me these, which if you an Apple nut you might be interested. Not sure of the frequency response but decent saving, but really who would pay $117 for Apple headphones! Would be way better than the crappy bundled ones though.

Current RRP is actually $99, but still a hefty saving!

how do these compare against $5 ue200??

    • -2

      Wayyy better

      Frequency response: 5Hz to 21kHz

      • I was all about the frequency response and bought Sony somethings… but the iPhone specs say it only outputs from 20hz, so my 8hz lows are moot. =-[

      • +3

Headphone frequency response quotes mean nothing because:

1 - The vast majority can't hear outside of 20-20,000Hz and people quickly lose even that as they age.
2 - Even taken at face value they're subjective according to the manufacturer. Whether the driver can actually reproduce 20KHz doesn't matter if compared to the rest of spectrum of sound it is completely inaudible.

        • +1

          Edit

        • True, but:
          1 - I can
2 - If they don't live up to the claim, I take 'em back!

(this post isn't aimed at anyone in particular)
Download Audacity and generate your own waves. On a PC with my Sony whatevertheyares (EX38?) I can hear right down to 8hz quite easily.
I rip my audio with no low or highpass at 320kbps and it sucks to think you will lose all the subtle highs and lows when you spend a decent amount of money on head/earphones. =-[

If a manufacturer says their product won't do lower than 20hz, I have to assume they won't do lower than 20hz… and I want lower than 20hz! =-D
So in some cases, the rating does affect how I purchase. Yes, I wouldn't buy a crappy camera just because it has a high pixel-count, but neither would I even consider one under 6mp these days.

I would use the rating as a starting-point to start my research before purchasing. I agree you shouldn't buy stuff because of shiny stickers or impressive figures on paper.

        • "20 Hz is considered the normal low frequency limit of human hearing. When pure sine waves are reproduced under ideal conditions and at very high volume, a human listener will be able to identify tones as low as 12 Hz".

Olson, Harry F. (1967). Music, Physics and Engineering. Dover Publications. p. 249. ISBN 0486217698.

Most likely what steve.rand is hearing is overtones or harmonics produced as a byproduct of his creation of an 8Hz tone which is not a pure sine wave.

Using frequency response as a gauge for sound quality is like using megapixel count as a gauge for image quality.

      has 2 drivers

Damn I bought for 60 something on big w online few months ago

Btw forget these if you are into heavy, bassy music they are very ordinary. Good for jazz, soft rock, blues, etc. Basically anything Steve Jobs was a fan of :P

hmmm Most stores are selling apple products cheaper then apple now, so people are paying extra for the privilege of lining up at the apple store?

    • +3

They need to feel 'special' and 'loyal' somehow right? Shopping at BigW or Kogan for bargain is just not the same. Don't have the iExpensive iFeel to iBuy factor! Get the drift?

        No.

Back-off Huu! Don't you know that leaving votive offerings at shrines is a selfless and centuries old custom.

These are a great all round headphone and for $37 they are awesome, twin driver tech for $37, unbeatable….
Might not have the bass some people like but with in-ear headphones the bass can be overpowering to the rest of the music i find

  • anyone know if its at this price in all stores?

  • how much better are these than the earphones/mic that comes with an iphone?

    • +23

      282.86% better

(iPhone Head phones $35, This one $99 so 99/35x100=282.86%) hehehehe

  • Yeah and online as well

  • How would these compare to my CX300s (which just broke) - looking for a replacement. Im extremely weary given my stock apple earphones actually physically hurt my ears.

    • can't compare these to the CX300

      • Even though the Apple earphones cost more at RRP? And I thought Sennheiser was overpriced…

      • u cant compare a BA earphone to a dynamic driver earphone, they sound completely different. CX300 is only better at bass, as said if you are bass lover n happy with CX300, get away from high-end earphones.
so many sennheiser fan boys out there, sennheiser makes good headphones not earphones (except ie7&8 but they are overpiced)
@ambiguous get this, considering BA earphones with 2 drivers such as se425, w2, um2 goes for over $200

        • +2

Most reviews I've seen put these Apple dual-BA earphones waaaay below those others you mentioned (and even at $37, below some similarly-priced dynamic earphones), so I don't think they should be compared that way.

        • of course, i am just stating how much they should be lookin at for a BA earphone with 2 drivers, personally i wouldn't go near low end BAs

      • I have 2 CX300 that just broke too. one of them has sound only from 1 side and the other is broken where near the jack

        • My wife and I both have CX300s. Both now only have sound on one side. Apparently it's a common problem. I liked the CX300 for sound and comfort (only used on train), but now looking for a more reliable replacement. I got some UE200s, but we both found them really uncomfortable (too big, even with the smallest fitting).

        • Evil-Elmo, here's what you need: $2.95 on eBay:-
Dual 3.5mm Mono Sockets to 3.5mm Stereo Jack Adapter

    • +1

Reportedly higher quality, but if you like CX300's sound (i.e. bassy) you may want to look elsewhere.

      • ^this

If you have the CX300 and you like them, these Apple ones are not for you

  • <insert obligatory Price Match @ Officeworks post>

I'm more interested in the $34 iPad 2…

  • Which Big W store was the photo from?

  • I never use the earbuds/headphones but I'm still tempted :P

  • Might have to pick up a pair as a spare given the price.

Even though these are dual drivers they aren't particularly amazing. If you were to compare these to the UE 700 they wouldn't really rate imo - I had both. However, for the price it is pretty sweet.

Mmm seems like none around Sydney or anywhere worth the trip.

  • +1

I am an apple nut ;) I ll take em :)

  • Wonder if this means a new one is coming out… Hopefully they improve their game and actually make the new one (if it will exist) better and worth half the cash you dosh out for it. Or better still please mean this is the end of these dreadful earphones. At $100 they're not worth it at $37 decent price.

  • I work at Big W and they've been at this price for a while. A guy came in saying it was that price on the internet store, but me and the girl I was working with were like it would be an internet only special, but when we scanned it, it came up as $37! We bought the last 2 at our store after that customer :P
They're good headphones, but to me they're just headphones. I slightly regret spending that amount on them as I hardly use them, but if you're a headphone lover then go right ahead. (It should be the same price at all stores).

  • Wow, good price on these, especially for Apple equipment (no offence intended)

I've never used these, but there suppose to be pretty decent. Can't say whether I'd spend the extra $30 when you can get some UE200's from LogitechShop or some CX300II's from MyMemory.

    Either way, +ve from me.

  • I've had a pair. Personally I wouldn't recommend them even at the lower price.

    1) The in-ear rubber tended to slowly slide out of my ear, especially while moving. It was frustrating having to replace them every 10 mins or so, especially if my hands were full (I listen to an iPhone while doing house chores and other things).

Now it could be the shape of my ear canal, but the rubber on a pair of Sennheissers I wore to death never gave me this problem.

    2) The 3.5mm plug sheath is very thin and the internal solder joints are small and brittle. Just like the cruddy "out ear" earphones that come as standard with iPods/iPhones, a connection inside can break after slightly rough treatment in a few months.

This has happened to me on three different Apple earphones. Yes, I'm probably a bit rough on them, but again, other brands didn't give me any trouble.

I believe that, just like mice, Apple doesn't make decent earphones.

    • You can try wearing them over the ears? It might help prevent it sliding out?

  • In terms of tech, twin BA for $37 is a steal.

If the tips can be changed, it might help. Anyone know if Complys or the UE rubber tips fit these?

For $5, the UE2 are a TOTAL bargain. The COTD deal is over but you can still get it for $7 shipped from Logitech shop.

I sold my UE TF10 (triple drivers), switched to the UE200 and am putting the extra $190 I saved in the bank. Is there is difference between the two? Sure! But not $190 more IMHO.

Always out of stock for BIGW's big discount items, for jumproo before and for this too!! what is wrong with BIGW..

    • +1

Low stock is no reason to neg the deal. Just picked up a pair from my local store. Thanks OP.

  • Sold out pretty much everywhere in NSW as at 10am on 11/10/2011 other than BIG W Neeta City (despite website saying Winston Hills had lots of stock). Thankfully I was able to get Apple Store (Castle Towers) to price match but since there was only one left in Neeta City, they only were willing to do the deal on one.

Quality is not bad- case/packaging is very nice as per Apple standard. Earphones aren't very bassy as others comment compared to other in-ears. I really only wanted it for remote/mic since it means I don't need to unplug them when a call comes in.

  • Guys, you can check stock levels via the online page. Mostly sold out.

    http://www.bigw.com.au/electronics/audio/audio-accessories/h…

    • It's not accurate unfortunately- I checked postcodes around Castle Hill (2154) and Winston Hills still says it has normal stock levels, whilst the others have low stock and to call ahead.

  • They're great - 'transparent' would be how I would describe them. Nice sounds, bass is present but not overbearing. I prefer these inears to my previous shures which really smashed the bass but did little else.

  • Not available in Canberra centre big w

  • Should add that this expires on the 30/10/11.

  • if anyone know any stock in melb, vic let me know !

  • It's Apple brand. People buy it because they don't care about sound quality. They want it for the label. If you want sound quality, look elsewhere.

    • Shiny,

I don't think you've listened to these ones. They're pretty good, and at $37 they will walk over anything similarly priced. Even at $100 they're very competitive.

      • Nope, have not heard them, so I have no right to say that they're shite. I'm going based off assumptions that Apple can't make $100+ range earphones. I've listened to Etymotics, Head Direct, Audio Technica in ears before. The moment I saw 'Apple' and '$117' I thought ugh… money better spent on proper brands.

But that's just me. I'm an ass.

  • I bought these when I got my 3Gs and am still happy with them. Only time they give me trouble is when they have been in the container and the leads have been wrapped for too long. Unflexing them properly will stop them sliding out of your ears. I paid top price from Apple, but only after looking around the stores for any decent hands free, in ear buds. Definitely a bargain.

    • The container is really quite difficult to fit it into- maybe I'm unco here but trying to wrap it around so that both the remote and the 3.5mm plug end up on a straight side of the triangle rather than at the end can be a tad frustrating since you can't close the case if anything is protruding. Still nice to know that the earbuds will stay clean(ish) a tad longer.

  • I got this for my Iphone and pretty happy with it, was going to get another pair but its sold out already, how does this compare with the logitech Ultimate Ears™ 400vi? saw it on their website, only $45.
