HP ProLiant N36L MicroServer

Hi All,

Im looking at finding one of these Micro Server's (or recommended equivalent…) to run 4x 2TB hdd's in a raid-z config with FreeNAS for backup purposes. I also plan to store all my media files on it, and using my existing Mediaportal htpc to stream the files from this instead of storing them on the htpc.

I have seen a few deals for these on here but nothing for the past few months. Can someone tell me where to get the best deal? I already have 1x 2TB Samsung Ecogreen hdd I can use, but would probably prefer 4x better full speed 2TB drives.

Look forward to any recommendations :)

You will be unlikely to need anywhere near even 1/2 the speed of a 5400rpm drive over a network. The bottleneck in cheap NAS and small servers like this is the CPU and Network Card, not the hard drives.

Using FreeNAS you should be able to get a maximum of about 50MB/sec output over a Gigabit LAN. Any green drive will more than keep up with that.

  • OP I have one available for $225. Unopened, fully sealed, Sydney Pickup near Liverpool.

  • Hey glenb83, I have one available as well. Sealed and unused, $199 + sixpack of beer. Went a bit over my head earlier and bought two of these boxes from hp. Pickup in Concord or Pyrmont.

    • Have you still got the HP Microserver available? I can pickup.

  • Hey sk280 and cdundee,

I'd be interested in getting one from one of you guys. I probably couldnt pick it up till next week though. How long ago did you buy it, do you still have receipt for warranty purposes etc?

    Cheers!

    • Hey, I got the delivery 22/9/11 and yes,I still have the receipts.

      • Excellent mate, sounds like a deal! Just need to find time to get up there now, I live in Kiama on the South Coast. Is Tooheys Extra Dry ok for the 6 pack?

        • Ted is fine. Just let me know when you're planning to come over. I tend to work in Mascot/St Peters every now and then as well. My gmail is cdundee.

    • Yes. I have the receipts as well. I bought 2 months back I think. Have to go back and look.

      • Hi sk280, do you still have the box for sale?

  • seriously?? why is no one in melb falling over to sell their "extra" microservers lol

with the regular get wines direct deals down in Melb, i could have managed $199 & a slab!!!! :P

  • If you can have it around $220 taht is a good deal

  • Anyone still trying to get rid of those?

I'm located in Perth (willing to pay postage if it is not outrageous)

    Thanks!

  • I'm looking, can pay cash in Sydney.

Eyo supposedly has stock coming in at $239.80 a unit. Freight ranges from $7.50 - $25 depending on your state. Or maybe you can collect if you live nearby

  • Yep, that's what I thought - I might order from them.
    Stock ETA 1/11.
For me to WA it ends up $265 - not as good as the HP deal, but still well worth it (I think).

  • I'm looking for one as well, can pay cash for someone's 'preloved' or if someone knows any online stores doing promotions?

    • Based in Mlebourne, CBD/Western suburbs

  • All, I had forgotten all about this thread. Mine is still unopened with warranty. Let me know if you are interested. Sydney Pickup (Southwest).

  • Hi sk280, I'm interested in purchasing it.
