Tips on purchasing a first PC please. Single channel vs dual channel.

Hi guys

I am looking to purchase my first PC ever, yay!
However, I need your help. Even I watched numerous posts and youtube videos, my low IQ brain cannot process much info when it comes to PC :(

I am looking at this PC from techfast
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/542446
Ryzen 5 3500X
GTX 1660 6GB [Galax 1-click]
8GB 2666MHz
A320 MB
240GB 2.5" SSD
550W PSU
Leaper Air Mini RGB Case

I only play League and valorant. Would this pc be enough to get a consistent 150+ FPS on these games? If not, Do you think it is worth upgrading to 16GB DDR4 [2666MHz] (2 x 8GB) for $89.00? Because I have read dual channel will get much better fps than single channel.

Thanks guys!

  • Be fine for league, should be ok with valorant.
Dual channel does give boost but is very marginal

    • If it's only marginal I may just go for single channel to save some bucks haha thanks bud

  • Could always add to it later, if 89 bucks is breaking the bank.

    • Will I have to replace the whole ram if I want dual channel laters?

      • you buy another stick of 8GB… See above how you said the extra is 2 x 8GB that's all dual channel is btw 2(dual) sticks of RAM running on two slots ergo two channels for the CPu to utilise concurrently. Makes little to no difference of your FPS also but that is a whole undertaking I'm not sure you grasp, couldn't hurt though

Got ya!so I just need to add 8g ram into my existing one right?

          • @qkqnxogus: For best results match them(like for like RAM stick), also check on the Mobo documentation which slot is which channel(slots will be numbered) but yep you got it.

        • Got ya!so I just need to add 8g ram into my existing one right?

          • @qkqnxogus: looks like you get the matching part ;P

          • @qkqnxogus: Ideally it should be a matched pair which you can buy as a pack. But in reality try to match at least the latency values at working bus speed when you add another 8GB in future. I currently use 4*4GB RAM in a dual channel setup which I found from here and there without any issues.

  • Usually for a 8GB Dual Channel setup, we are supposed to use 4GB*2.
But the performance improvement is marginal and better to save RAM slots for future upgrades specially if you only have 2 RAM slots.

If 8GB is enough for your game and have some spare money, better to invest for a better GPU always (could be a used one).
Make sure that 550W PSU (specially max current in +12V rail) is from a reputed brand so that you can go for a better GPU in future.

  • Single and dual channel shouldn't even be in your top 10 priorities when buying a PC lol

That's not true at all. Dual channel RAM is important when you're building a high-end PC. The double bandwidth does make a difference. On a budget build like this, not so much.

Also, OP: Yes, it's worth upgrading to 16GB RAM. Just bite the bullet and do it now for longevity.

  • with 3200c16 16gb 8x2 kit keeps popping up here at $100 or so , better to just sell the 8gb 2666 for $40 and get a deal here to upgrade yourself than paying $89 to techfast

    • Such a good idea! just sell it on gumtree?

      • yeah, friends / gumtree / ebay , whichever suits you

or if you want to cheap out, then just go to your local umart and get another 8gb 2666 stick to save yourself 40 bucks from techfast upgrade

        https://www.umart.com.au/Crucial-8GB--1x8GB--DDR4-2666MHz-Si…

        don't worry about compatibility issue

        • you are the best! thanks heaps mate!
