Older Steam Games with "Must Play" Mods?

I'm curious to know what the are some of the recommendations that others have for games on Steam that have amazing mods? Not referring to DLC (though feel free to suggest) but creator mods or add on packs which turns a good game into a great one. More importantly, which mods specifically?

  • Dunno if it's budget but Arma 3 and Hearts of Iron 4 come to mind for me…..

    • Which mods in particular would you recommend?

Millennium dawn, Road to 56, Novum Vexillum and Kaisereich are a few popular on Hearts of Iron…

As for Arma its a bit harder as you may want mods tailored to online group missions or be like me and like messing around with silly mods and scenarios …

To help others give you suggestions what genre's are you into?

Thanks for listing them and posting the links.

I'm into most genres with the exception of RTS and RPGs. I was asking overall to help myself and others who aren't necessarily too familiar with mod packs. Might even help others discover new games or stretch out existing games in their library.

Rome total war / Medieval total war 2

With Lord of the rings mod / Third age total war mod.

    • Medieval 2 also has a mod with the armies of different Zelda factions, and this was close to a decade before TW:Warhammer had monstrous creatures.

This might be of use to you - not sure what's going cheap in the steam sales, though.

    Nonetheless, hope it helps!

      Can personally attest to the following;

      • Call of Chernobyl for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - good combiner for the three games, though it should probably be played with some other stabilising and overhaul mods
      • The Last Days for Mount and Blade - Lord of the Rings mod with fairly good models in the Mount and Blade engine
      • The content pack for KOTOR II - restores a lot of content that was left on the cutting room floor for knights of the old republic
    • Wasn't even aware the site existed and found some interesting mods on some older FPS games I already have. Cheers.

  • I hope someone can help me out with the name of the mods, but torchlight 2 has a lot of mods (Synergies!) that do turn the game into a headache inducing grindfest (on a big screen). There is a lot of good support. At work right now, I might be able to list the 4 i have running later when i get home.

The changes to game play are very minor but necessary, such as heaps more inventory slots and easier to view item stats.

    • Thanks for suggesting them.

  • Mount and blade bannerlord

With pretty much all of the better mods - like the starwars one or Crpg or the total conversion etc

    • Just saw some footage…reminds me of Star Wars Battlefront. Thanks. 👍

  • Nier Automata is a game that goes from a great game on console to a good game on PC because of a crummy port but you can get a fanmade patch which turns it back into a great PC game.

  • Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 with mods are amazing. Go to nexus mods and download and read the compatabilities or for Knights 2 use the steam workshop to install mods. You can get the games around $5 each on a sale.
