A very personal look at Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran. Cindy Wockner was a journalist reporting the story of two surly drug smugglers. She was there from the beginning and would become a good friend of the two changed men.

The Pastor and the Painter: Inside the lives of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran from Aussie schoolboys to Bali 9 drug traffickers to Kerobokan's redeemed men

A sad, moving and powerful story.

These young men reformed themselves and did so much good in their years in prison right up until the end.

do you mean these drug dealers ? because of their acts many more lives are affected in negative way.
Pastor and Painter - just because they were caught red handed and had no other choice!

I have some sympathy that these two genuinely rehabilitated themselves in prison however I am very uncomfortable with the media (and some members of the public) treating them like heroes as they were approaching and after the time they were executed.

If it wasn’t such a long period between conviction and punishment it would have been a different story.

        • The entire group did a terrible thing, not taking away from that at all. They bought so much of public humiliation, heartache, guilt and shame to themselves & their families including money drain in terms of legal bills.

But, from being right at the bottom, they chose to help those around them by getting involved in teaching courses at the prison. Having watched some prison stories, can you imagine living here in Aus and then going to prison in Indonesia, how terrible it must have been. But, they rose above self-pity and in some ways redeemed themselves by their conduct post-incarceration.

Remember Corby was also in at the same time, but The Joker chose to release her and shoot these men. What had she done to deserve being released except for being one of the prison Don’s!

I had a good friend who became reliant on heroin to cope. Her execution too, was by her own doing, one injection at a time.
She destroyed her life and a caring and loving family.
Unfortunately she never found art or religion to save her.
