Any comments on the quality of this rice?

No idea on quality but any rice that is grown overseas in natural conditions and does not require massive aussie irrigation has to be a winner. Anyone who cares about the environment should refuse to buy aussie grown rice.

    • Why? Can you elaborate further please

      • Australia's Arid climate isn't suited to growing Rice.

    • Interesting

      Interesting thought.
What about support Aussie farmers, workers?

    • I've always wondered how Sunrice can be quite competitive on cost on a $/kg basis, especially when the supermarkets are doing half price on a 10kg bag.

Rice naturally grows in monsoonal tropical climates where no artificial irrigation is required. In Australia we have to create an artificial environment using massive amounts of water.

I say buy your rice from Asia (India Gate basmati from Costco is my go to) and have Australia concentrate on growing the crops we can naturally do best.

I reckon the Moi rice is great value.

Isn't rice growing on a large scale (in Aus) only allowed near good water supplies (rivers etc) to reduce water wastage and heavily regulated in terms of how water is used? I doubt monsoonal tropical climate areas can supply all the rice needed on Earth.

Also, considering Australian rice is exported to many countries why would they even be interested in this product? I can't be cheap since our labor costs would be highest. Even with advanced technology surely it's cheaper elsewhere… Maybe they see it as more of a premium product (strict quality controls and perhaps less fertilizer/pesticides etc)?

At a time of global pandemics, I'm kind of glad Australia's grows so much food and doesn't have to heavily rely on imports. Seems counterproductive to boycott Australian rice because other parts of the world can produce rice with less irrigation. You're looking at a single factor only and ignoring lots of others.

  • @save50, can u pls advise which store u seen this? i dint see this when i was at Midland store on Tues.
