Nokia 2.2 for $65 (Telstra Prepaid Locked) @ Woolworths

190

Found this deal via price hipster. Android one phone so should be good for basic use. 16 GB is a let down but I think for the money the phone is great.

    Code doesn't work… kidding

No stock anywhere around me. Nice for them to do a "special" without stock….

Who do they think they are, Aldi's?

  • Pity its locked. Would have liked this for my kid.

    • Cheaper, and far less fuss, to buy a new one than unlock one with <6 months service. Tls charges $80 BUT they make the choice simple by requiring you to go into a store, pay the fee, then get on the phone and ask them to unlock the phone. Just went thru this for a friend. No, he didn't opt to give Telstra another $80 and yes he will be dumping them asap.

How did you get anyone to help you unlock. It seems impossible now covid is the excuse for lack of service.

        • Apparently it can only be unlocked in-store.
          Can anyone confirm this?

          • @Tiggrrrrr: I can confirm that pre-paid locked phones can ONLY be unlocked using the process I described above atm - supposedly this is Covid19 driven (lol).

"go into a store, pay the unlock fee, then get on the phone to Telstra pre-paid and ask them to unlock the phone using your receipt".

Initially after looking on the web for info and going thru the usual press 1, press 2, hang on we're busy, press X to destroy etc, I got to a recorded phone message which said "pre-paid phones cannot be unlocked online, you must go into a store".

Not wanting to waste time going in only to be told 'sorry', I rang a local store and was informed they definitely cannot unlock the phone in store. I told her about the contradictory online message so she said she'd see if she could find me a solution and ring me back.

Eventually I was given a Telstra pre-paid services number to ring where the process above was outlined. I give Telstra a 2/10 for the ridiculous confusion and processes involved, but the woman in the store a 10/10 for her individual service.

Btw there are "secret" Nokia keycodes which can be used to reset lock codes to a default (12345 or similar) on some phones according to my web searches. Might be worth trying, might be risky.

            • @[Deactivated]: From previous searches into unlocking phones you can purchase the unlock codes online, generally costs $3-15 dollars from memory. The codes usually are specific to your actual phone (you need to look at your handset and find the manufacturing number). You send it through and they generate it for you. A healthy google check to make sure the particular provider isn't dodgy is worthwhile.

@futureminime: Yep did that but didn't find one I'd trust at a reasonable price.

  • Does it work with a woolworth sim since they use the telstra network?

    • Friend bought this phone in Feb for $99. Has been paying thru the nose since so I looked at options for him.

Searched the net and consensus was that some phones will accept a different sim, others - esp some Nokias - won't so we tried with an ALDI sim (also Tls). No dice unfortunately - the phone asked for the unlock code.

Try with Boost, it should work. I have used Boost sim on Telstra locked phone and it worked.

        • I'd think it would work with Belong too but I havnt tested. I got 80gb on sign up for the $40 Belong sim (you need to follow the instructions on ozbargain to get that), got $20 referal credit, and pay $10 each month going forward. All data banks. Signed up during covid with the non existent call service.all went fine.

@grasstown: It does not work. Bought one, tried it, failed. Officeworks were nice enough to take the phone back and refund.

Yo that's an absolute steal, had one of these for a bit and while it had a couple issues, for 65 bones this is fantastic. Two of my three closest Safeways have stock and I'm almost tempted to grab one as a backup phone tbh.

    • Don't forget it's locked to Telstra.

      • +8

I'm on Boost, which worked fine in the one I had that was also locked.

        • Was just going to suggest that!

I'm with Belong and it didn't work, and Belong is a direct subsidiary of Telstra. Don't count on it.

          • @jcon: Belong only uses the wholesale network like Aldi

      • Would love to kbow if LetsBeMates works on it. Think they running off the Telstra network. And for $10 a month that is a steal for a sim lol (ok its $20 but yoy get $10 off your internet)

Does anyone knows if 10% discount will be applied (Woolworths Insurance Customer) if this is purchased with groceries. As per T&C on their website, I can't see why not.

Excludes any vouchers or offers or Delivery Saver items, bag fee and crate service fee, internet cafes, purchases of liquor, smoking/tobacco products and accessories, newspapers, Woolworths Services, Gift Cards (including iTunes), mobile recharge, Woolworths Mobile, travel cards and tickets, Carpet Care and lottery products

    • If you end up giving it a try please post to update. Thanks

I picked up a Samsung J2 Pro 2018 from woolies today for $9 on clearance. Not posting it as a deal since there's probably not many around, but for $9 it's pretty good! B28, amoled display, expandable storage, and I got it unlocked (was telstra locked) for 6usd.

    • Which unlock service did you use frog? Plenty of shonks out there apparently.

Took a bit of a gamble buying some Samkey credits off ebay, but to be safer you could get the samkey credits from fone fun shop who are featured on ozb sometimes (but I think it's like $15 or so for the 3 credits required). Happy to share the ebay seller I used though if you like.

        • Thx but looking to unlock a Nokia 2.2

          • @[Deactivated]: Ah! Yep, I can't help with that one, the service I used only for Samsungs (as you likely guessed).

            • @frogduck: Hi, which ebay user did you use to get the Telstra Samsung J2 Pro 2018 unlocked for USD6 please. I also bought one for $9 and now wish to get it unlocked from Telstra so I can use my ALDI SIM card.

              • @KJS123456: Hi, I bought from stai30. If you allow your personal messaging here I can send you a link to them if you can't find it.

    • Thanks,I found that seller on ebay

Appears to be similar in features to the Alcatel U3 which you can get as an unlocked version for approx. $45 on ebay: https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=alcatel+u3…

Not sure if you are joking or not, but similar how?

      2Gb Ram, 16Gb storage vs 1Gb Ram, 8Gb storage
      5.7"HD display vs 4" Screen
      13MP camera vs 5MP
3 yrs guaranteed updates vs limited updates
      Face detection vs none
      etc…
