            @abc: 8x40 is lighter with higher magnification and 7x50 supposedly give better image quality but bulkier

            @abc: 8 is the magnification (8x) which is 1x greater than 7x. 40mm is the diameter of the lens at the large end. 50mm lets in more light than 40mm; you also get a view that is wider. 7x50 will show you a larger scene and will be more effective in low light, but at slightly less magnification than 8x40. The 7x50 will also be physically larger.
