How to Get a Good Price When Selling a Phone

Hi guys. I'm interested to know what is a good way to sell a phone and ensure you get a good price? For example if I bought an Oppo Reno 5G for $599 and I wanted to get $500 for it a year later. Will I need to give the buyer the original receipt so they can claim warranty? Thus revealing how much I paid for the phone? Cheers.

For example if I bought an Oppo Reno 5G for $599 and I wanted to get $500 for it a year later.

    Lol seriously?!

    • Just an example. They were selling for $1499 at JB Hi Fi a couple of months ago.

      • Yes, and then were selling for $599 recently. Following that course of devaluing, why would you think it would then only drop $99 in a year?

It's not going to be worth $500 after a year of use

        • Does Australian stock and warranty mean anything?

@BluebirdV: Not once someone has used and abused it for a year.

@spackbace: I agree it's not worth it but people pay ridiculous prices sometimes on gumtree.

@BluebirdV: They do if you're a sucker that takes paypal instead of cash in hand.

I agree it's not worth it but people pay ridiculous prices sometimes on gumtree.

True, but they are usually working offshore on an oil rig or buying the item for a friend who can't pick it up but will send their agent to collect it.

OPPO RENO 5G BLACK UNLOCKED 256GB Used $449.95 on eBay.

  • If you can sell it for $499, what are you waiting for?…. Sell sell sell…. As to how to get it sold for $499… Well… [Cricket.sound]. Find a sucker?.

Keep all the original accessories, boxes. Keep phone in a case and with a screen protector. With a bit of luck you might get something back for it. Also when you do sell it read up on all the other sales disasters. So we don't get another post on how I was scammed selling my phone on Gumtree. I'm not convinced a OPPO would be popular to get enough interest on a used phone. As for receipt. That might help. It's expected that you paid more for it, so the new owner won't care, but they get the possible warranty as long as it doesn't have your name on it as usually warranty isn't transferable.

Oppo churn out heaps of models and has no good second hand warranty experience like an Apple iPhone (ie rock up to Apple store and get it fixed). Be lucky to get $200 in a year.

To be fair, I rate Oppo pretty well. They're better quality than Xiaomi phones, and I they're usually more competitive than Huawei phones. And they're sub-brand OnePlus is a favourite among consumers. However, all three are going to go pretty poorly on the used market.

They aren't your established brands: Apple, Sony, Samsung, LG.
Even the Chinese Motorola (Lenovo) and Nokia (HMD) aren't doing that well on the used market.

Go back in time and buy an iPhone.

Wouldn't you go forward? It would be cheaper and you can also buy an almanac.

How to Get a Good Price When Selling a Phone

By not buying an Oppo for starters…

  • Even if it was an iPhone you're cracked if you think you'll get <20% hit after 12 months of use.

  • iPhone have the highest re-sell value but they never on sale. Even with iPhone your expectation still unrealistic. Lets switch the situation and think as a buyer, would you buy a used Oppo Reno 5g for $500 in 2021 assuming its still in fantastic condition(not even a single scratch) knowing that it was priced at $599 in 2020?

Used phones are like used cars, but used phones esp Andorid devices loose their value pretty fast. As others have said iphones hold their value much better than Android devices. LG especially are notorious for freefalling RRp's.

ANYWAYS an answer for your questions is, keep the original box, if you have the receipt keep it, all accessories (maybe not used headphones… thats just a hygiene no-no) and keep it in a case with screen protector. A pristine device with minimal scuffs and scratches will get you higher values.

Also only ever sell on Ebay if they have offers on like $1 seller evaluation fees or free of seller fees. Their fees + Paypal fees kinda defeats the purpose of listing.

I sell on gumtree/fb marketplace. But be aware that it is a haven for Scammers and dodgy peeps. Just use common sense to weed out those that are genuine and those that are dodgy scammers.

    Hope these tips are helpful.
