I was going to say the same.. Too smooth? As opposed to the really hard ones that make you hack and cough, feel like your throat is on fire, etc?
There are probably 1 or 2 others between 'too smooth' and the Isopropyl you speak of.
The black standard is my fav, very traditional flavour
The gold is just…its not true vodka
It sounds like you overheard someone say something bad about this gold vodka once, and said the black was better, but really it was just cheaper and they were trying to save face. And now you've taken the learnings from that conversation to an online forum called ozbargain.

@[Deactivated]: I agree the grey/black bottle (to me) tastes better, maybe its the lower amount of alcohol content
