Would You Repair LCD Screen of TV?

I found someone selling their Samsung uhd tv
That was $2195 for $250 because their kid threw a milk bottle at the tv and the lcd screen is now ruined

Would it be a good idea to buy it at that price and get the screen fixed? Seller mentioned that if you press the spot where it was hit, the screen works perfectly again….

Don’t know if this would be too expensive to fix or a good opportunity to score a “65 inch tv for a small fixing price

What would the true ozbargainer do?

Would you repair LCD screen of tv?

No. This is not the same as replacing a broken laptop or a phone screen. You will most definitely have to get this repaired by Samsung or at one of their authorized service centers as DIYing is not possible due to not having access to replacement panels in the open market. The quote from Samsung is guaranteed to be the same or pretty close to the market value of a brand new TV of the same model or similar.
Don't you think the seller wouldn't have checked the repair costs before trying to sell it at 10% of it's value.

The screen would have to be replaced. Since this is the bulk of the cost of the machine, it's not really a goer unless you permanantlly press the screen while you watch tv so it looks ok.

  • You’ll have to transport it to the repair centre or pay for this. What a hassle.

What would the true ozbargainer do?

Move on to something else. No bargain to be had here.

  • Get the model number off the set and go to your local repairer and ask for an estimate to replace the screen. Usually cheaper to buy a new set.

Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.

  • You could use bits of it.
You could use bits of it like the frame to make a fishtank.

    But as a TV?

    I don't see it.

Don't think the fish would have much of a turning radius….

    • You must have seen people turning old CRT TVs into fish tanks but we are talking mm thick LED LCD panels here.

      • I thought the Frame could be flush with the wall in front of a recessed in the wall tank, backlit
        of course…
I guess being in Melbourne people aren't getting out to Bunnings much to workshop things…

Some people recess their fishtanks into partition walls and put something like a TV bezel on one side and a picture frame on the other. It’s classy or something…

        • Maybe a Fishtank screensaver is the go.
Or the Fireside log thing, given the cold.
