  • Man the deep blue is a beauty.

    • +2

50m water resistance and Hardex glass help me to kill the deal :).
      Very beautiful though.

      • +6

Water resistance is completely fine and appropriate for a dress watch. This will probably never even see a pool.

I have Hardlex watches that have been worn for years and have 0 scratches, but I do agree Seiko are stingy not giving sapphire at this price

        • I have an SKX with Hardlex, had for a couple of years, I do have one scratch on it. It's not really noticable though, you have to get it on just the right angle

  • can someone please fully explain how automatic movement works? so if it stops working, does it automatically know what time it is when its winded up again?

    • if it stops working, you need to wind it up and re-adjust the time and date. it won't automatically know the time

    • This should give you a good start - How a mechanical watch works

    • You need to wear it every day, or if off arm, "wind it" by moving it back and forwards to keep it would up and "charged"

I have a Orient Automatic, and its painful if i don't wear it everyday as it stops, and i have to reset time, day, and date. This is the closest i have to owning a Seiko, Orient is a sister brand.

BEST watch for mine at a very fair price is Citizen with the Eco [solar powered] stays charged even after 6 months, more time on the more expensive models

Starbuy has lots of them for sale, he has sold me 4 already..lol

      • You can also "wind it" by turning the crown, not only "moving it back and forth".

        • +2

Not true, my orient doesn't allow you to crown wind, and thats not exactly uncommon.

      • thanks for that. That seems abit too much of a hustle for me ahaha. Ill probably stick to either quartz or solar

        • I don't see the problem. If you like the look of this watch just wear it (almost) every day. You'll be smart, stylish and sophisticated. What's more to like! :)

          • @MiniMoo: Cant really wear it everyday as i do uni online now ahaha :(. This specific watch is too simple for me. I already own a Gshock as my daily wear, so i just need something a bit fancier for the occasional outings lol
my choices are narrowed down to either https://www.starbuy.com.au/seiko-coutura-solar-steel-mens-wa…
            https://www.starbuy.com.au/seiko-sports-5-automatic-blue-dia… or https://www.starbuy.com.au/citizen-eco-drive-steel-chronogra…

@bargainhunter5800: Why not, I wear my watch at home :P

            • +2

@bargainhunter5800: Huh?? what an odd thing to say, the idea is to wear a watch at all times except sleeping. I have multiple automatic watches, it takes less than a minute to adjust the time and get them ticking again. Easy.

The Seiko Presage line is very smart and elegant and IMO it goes with anything. The SRPE19J is perhaps the most versatile. It gets the most wristtime of all my watches at the moment.

              • +1

@nubzy: lol, it's like people are complaining that they have to charge their smart phone at night, its just part of owning an automatic watch.

              • @nubzy: I don’t think it’s an odd thing to say at all. A watch is something I put on when I’m going out. I don’t wear a watch when I’m at home all day any more than I carry my wallet around.

            • +2

              @bargainhunter5800: I agree

What this has done is forced me to wear the Orient everyday, because it is painful to change the day and date if it stops.

I like to wear all my watches in rotation but the Orient is too care intensive

              CITIZEN ECO for the win

  • oh damn, that would be quite a hustle. Does it affect the date too? and can you change the date whenever you want? because thats not the case with some quartz movements

    • +1

According to the manual, "Do not set the date between 9:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m…" so not whenever you want. In any date watches, if you want to quick set the date, change the time first to 6:00 so it can either be pm and am then adjust accordingly.

    • The date will be wrong too. Remember that this is day only for date, so you'll be correcting it most months anyway

    • Yes, if the movement stops, Time and Date and other complications will stop and will need to be re-adjusted.

  • Been on the lookout for a watch to wear with lighter shirts. Couldn't say no to Blue Moon.

Was a bit concerned about Hardlex but I have two other watches I've had for 5+ years that don't have a single scratch so I think I'll be right.

  • Ultra watch noobs.

Can someone please explain the differences between the featured Seiko and this Emporio Armani?

    https://www.kechiq.com.au/product/emporio-armani-watch-ar247…

    Thank you 😅

    • The Seiko is a Mechanical watch whereas the Emporio Armani is Quartz.

The Emporio Armani and many other "Fashion watches" are generally cheaply made and they just stamp their brand on it.

      • so if im right, solar and quartz are better for low maintenance. And whereas for automatic, we basically have to wind it every time before use?

I was interested in the Seiko 5 https://www.starbuy.com.au/seiko-sports-5-automatic-blue-dia… but looks like the automatic movement is too much of a hustle for me

        • Most automatics run for 20+ hours after being fully wound, you can take it off at night and it's still good tomorrow.

        • +2

Automatics don't require winding before every use, assuming you are wearing it daily. "Automatic" means automatically wound (via movement of your wrist during every day activities). You are thinking of "mechanical" where there is no automatic winding mechanism. You power a mechanical by winding the crown.

        • +1

I have the Seiko 5 with a Black Dial, as long as you wear it everyday or every second day it will be fine, it also has a 41 Hour Power Reserve, meaning it can continue to run for up to 41 hours once it is fully wound.

If you are after convenience and just want a watch that tells the time, by all means go with Solar/ Quartz.

Mechanical watches are for those of us who appreciate the mechanical movement inside.

    • +3

The Seiko is a quality entry level watch, where the Emporio Armani is cheap trash with a "fancy" name stamped on it.

Really it's up to you which you prefer, but I'd predict if you end up becoming a bit of a watch enthusiast, the Seiko would still end up on wrist rotations, the Armani wouldn't.

      • +1

out of the three which would be a good base for a starter collection? tia :)

        • +2
          1. Blue moon 2. Mocking bird 3. Light blue
          • +1

@hexad: thanks mate, got the blue moon! Can't wait it looks so sexy haha

            • +2

@ohtaek: Good choice, great looking watch. I really like Mocking Bird, but that's purely because its an uncommon colour and I've already got a few nice dark blue/silver dress watch combos.

Beware though, after your first you'll be eyeing off a new one regularly from here on in.
