Sticky Rubber/Plastic Umbrella Handle

Noticed that all the umbrella handles have an unpleasant sticky feeling to it. Some are plastic whilst others are a plastic rubber handle. Anyone have any home diy remedies to make them as close to new feeling again?

    Wear gloves?

Get your butler to carry the umbrella?

Perhaps a child could assist with the carriage?

    • Yeah, I guess, have a bit of time and wanted a longer-term solution rather than buying a new one. A quick google says to clean with soap and water and strip the thin plastic coating with isopropyl. Just wondering if anyone had any life hack type of ideas they've used in a similar situation.

      • and strip the thin plastic coating with isopropyl

Surprisingly the isopropyl works, if you can afford any at the current going rate of $1,000 a litre.

You don't need to strip the rubber coating, just rub the IPA in until it stops being sticky.

  • Eucalyptus oil or methylated spirits

  • Duct tape

    • Duck feathers?

rubber tends to de-vulcanize over time, explained by MrMobile here in a video which explains why a lot of older things that are coated in a soft touch rubber becomes gooey to the touch as they age. A few of my powerbanks, computer mice, phone and bluetooth speakers have suffered the same fate.

Some isopropyl alcohol will clean it up, and you can probably use some grip tape (not the skateboard kind, rather the ones used for tennis racquets and hockey sticks) to fix up your umbrella handles.

+1, thanks for the tip re isopro alco.
Bloody logitech mice suffering the same fate.
Funny it mostly happen to stuff that haven't been used for a while, daily use items are OK. Human sweat must have preservative properties.

Yes, that's right - you've tried all the umbrellas on the market.
    Wooden handle umbrella
    If you're a knob
    If you're a boxer

  • Wrap in rope/ twine

  • Haven't tried it on an umbrella handle, but I find that Orange Power gets the stickiness off most surfaces

Small amount of bicarbonate soda and water to make a paste, then rubbing it on the item. You'll feel the residue come off. Clean up with damp cloth. Cheap!

Haven't had it fail me yet, have done remote controls, usb sticks, mice, handles and umbrellas.

  • A tad late but recently experienced the sticky film coating on an umbrella handle. The umbrella was an expensive one & in perfect condition otherwise. I soaked handle in a bucket of hot water & vanish laundry powder. IT CLEANED IT UP IN MINUTES & IS LIKE NEW!!
