KFC's Hot and Spicy Is Neither Hot or Spicy

As an Asian, KFC's hot and spicy's spicyness is virtually tasteless. Why is Westerners definition of spicy so low?

  • So, back in the day, the old world and Asia, only knew of black pepper (native to Indian Subcontinent), nutmeg & cloves (native to Spice Islands, SE Asia), amongst other spices.

Chilli didn't enter the scene until the 14-1500s, brought by the Portuguese and Spanish explorers from Central/South America.

If you're in Sydney, venture to Punchbowl, Yagoona and Lakemba. I find the KFC Hot N Spicy there is less crispier and more hotter, because they don't cover it in too much flour.

And if you're a woman venturing those areas then please wear a headscarf or carry some pepper spray.

        Bigot…

There are Anglo-Australians and people who have been living there for 50+ years. You'll be fine without a scarf.

Hmm I guess it's worth the risk to get bashed if the Hot & Spicy is good.

  • There's plenty of western spicy cuisines - just not at lowest-common-denominator KFC and the like.

Usually those who prefer KFC must prefer their food bland anyway. KFC knows that and takes it into account even for its "hot 'n' spicy".

Give us a break, soy bean. Your latte is calling you on King St

I agree KFC is a load of sh!t

  • Hot n' Spicy when fresh is pretty good. Though I normally like to add some wasabi mayo on it for extra kick. Burning bum defs a minus though.

  • Schrodinger's Chicken.

Dude it's KFC. Fast food. Not known for its quality. My experience is you're lucky if the chips are salted, and they don't completely screw up an order as simple as one of their family deals. (Always check before you drive away!) The "hot and spicy" still tastes better than original to me.

  • Never had it before and decided to give it a whirl considering how spicy this thread has become.

I really enjoyed it, there is definitely some zing in there and felt it warm up my lips. Not super spicy but you can taste it for sure. Could probably be a tiny bit spicier and I would be happier.

    I had it today.

Definitely not as spicy as it was when it first came out (15+ years ago). I would call it mild to my Western pallet. Very weak, really just crunchy. Almost no spice. I can see why anyone from any culture would be disappointed. They should just call it 'extra crunchy' or something.

Used to be very hot (too hot actually for me) or at least medium.

  • Not all Westerners :) you're probably referring to Anglos; I had Greek two nights ago and they had chili flakes which were spicy AF. But made the souvlaki so good!!

    • Greece = hot climate

      Theory holds true

the age old question, why is KFC hot and spicy not hot nor spicy

  • I'm Asian. If you say it's not hot, prove to me, eat when it's just out lol. Obviously will burn your mouth literal meaning.
Spicy I agree it's not spicy enough but it is enough already to make many people go number 2 with a hot feeling in there. I guess it is perfect to serve the wider public. You can always add chilly sauce

    I find mayonnaise very spicy

I'd never had it before so i got a hot n spicy box meal last friday but i'm not sure if i got a regular piece or a h&s piece. The skin seemed to be different than normal but there wasnt the slightest hint of anything hot or spicy, and i'm a complete pu$$y with that stuff.

I might have to try again to be sure.

Bought a 3 piece box in hot n spicy, got 2 drumsticks and a wing
Also go 6 pieces of wicked wings.

Couldn't tell the difference between hot n spicy and wicked wings as they were the same size and tasted the same.

    • 2 drumsticks and a wing. That would of sucked. Should of requested 2 thighs and a rib.

Another angle to it is : Once the Westerners start getting old and diseased and start losing their sense of smell, they can slowly switch over to Asian food and still taste some flavor. I know of some one who got cancer and would only eat Indian food. I wonder what Asian elders do when they start losing their sense of smell (which is how humans can taste anything).

…You've made me remember that my mum now gets me to taste food before she marinates food because she's slowly losing her sense of taste due old age.

As for Asian elders, you know they're old when everything tastes too much (salty, spicy etc). It's always helpful to ask for water before you taste their food :P

      • +1

yeah me mums gettting older and always asks me to taste

    As an Asian…nah, (profanity) that.

As someone who likes spice as a taste they like, KFC Hot and Spicy is a little hit and miss.

I usually don't get it because ILY Original Recipe and the price tag isn't worth it. If I ever had any, I'd pick it sometimes as a Go Bucket option.

  • That’s why in Asia you can add chilli sauce from the tap when eating KFC chicken love it….

This thread is giving me flashbacks to when I was a much younger man, living in a fully catered college at uni. Whilst it was very anglo-centric (probably 70%+) we had always had a sizeable contingent of students from all across SE and East Asia.

When I first got there I was amused by these students always bringing to the communal dining hall a bottle of Sriracha (the only chilli sauce readily available in the supermarket in that town apparently) and dousing our fine Western fare in the stuff. It wasn't until I started getting to know them and sampling their home cuisines that I realised how bland Western food was to their palate. That ruined me and I've loved spicy food ever since.

And now I'm craving a vindaloo!

  • Australia the nanny state caters to the lowest common denominator. Hence we get bland cheese and non spicy food.
I love my spicy tom yum goon at my local Thai place. Truly spicy

    Try Belle's https://belleshotchicken.com/

    Or of course Gami

I'm a white Aussie, but I love my food hot and spicy and I agree, KFC is definitely neither of those things.

    • +2

Belles was awesome when it was new in Sydney, then they toned everything down.

The top 2 level of hotness are just gimmicky, I doubt 10% of the population can be tolerate the top 2 level satisfactorily

When H&S came out yonks ago, I doubt 10% of the population back then could tolerate it,

      • Belle's in Melbourne is still damn good. Surely the Belle's in Sydney is ok? In Melbourne their "hot" chicken is spicier than H&S ever was and is really damn good.

        • Belle's is a massive rip off. A belle's combo is like $17 to $22 for 3 pieces of chicken and pretty tasty chips. At KFC, I can get like 12 pieces of chicken and 8 wicked wings for that money.

          • @Orico: I thought that too until I bought it. The chicken pieces are actually pretty big. It doesn't sound like a lot but I think it's worth the money. It's like spending $20+ for a meal at Nando's, expensive but worth it IMO.

Granted this is my experience in Melbourne, not sure if Sydney is the same.

            • +1

              @Ghost47:

The chicken pieces are actually pretty big

              Chicken is chicken lol

              • @Orico: Your BF must be very happy with the fact that you have no concept of size. If you have a GF then …. no idea.

              • @Orico: And you can have small chickens and large chickens.. E.g. Costco chickens are pretty large. Either way I recall thinking "would $17 for 3 pieces of chicken and a side but nothing else? What a rip" until I actually had it and realised it was a decent sized meal (and I usually do eat a lot).

In the end it's about quality not quantity, like Nando's.

Did you try it when it first came out in Australia?

I found it a huge kick back then
Went so well with the cooler elements of the zinger

Now the chips have more spice

Did kfc have to give up some of the 11 in reparations to the colonel's original employees or something?

  • Why is Westerners definition of spicy so low?

Same reason why so many food chains get away with dishes that have zero flavour—not even salt. A great example IMO is Muffin Break's immense popularity.

  • the actual range of component ingredient variety plays a huge part in perceived spicyness. For me it's the complex mix that's most appealing about hot food… so was quite surprised to find when overseas that after reassuring local staff (as a traveller) that i was fine with an extra++hot order, that all that meant was heaps more birds-eye chillis were thrown in.

  • I don’t think KFC defines western tastes on spicy….. Creole cooking is something you can look up.

You have heard of habaneros and ghost peppers used in American cooking right?

Might want to do some research there little fella, not very informed at all

    • +1

You have heard of habaneros and ghost peppers used in American cooking right?

That comes from the Mexican influence and ghost peppers is from India.

WEstern cooking doesn't use that. In America, it's borrowed from other cuisines.

  • I take it back, the h&S i had today was delicious and quite spicy. Even got a huge piece from the 4.95 deal.

  • I am ashamed and proud to say I have probably eaten Hot & Spicy 7-8 times since it came out and every time it hasn't been as good as it used to be years ago, yet every time I go back for more. Need to learn to make my own.
