I have this TV for the bedroom, looks great and powers on instantly. Android OS is a little slow compared to the Sony in my living room but not too bad.

Mine didn't come with Prime and I wasn't able to download it, though you can update the firmware on it with the file in this Dropbox which adds Prime (and makes the TV a little faster):
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/49la0fvggr2zcjz/V8-R851T02-LF1V237…

Note searching for an update doesn't find new firmware updates, only software, so you need to install via USB. To do this you power off at the wall, insert USB, and turn the power on while holding the physical power button (under the TV in the middle).

    • I have the same tv. prime situation is so disappointing. Good to see there’s a solution even though it involves some work. Grr

Yeah I had always been casting from my phone, but I find that a little annoying. Theres ways to sideload apps though I didn't want to do that. I was reading on OzBargain about someone who purchased this TV recently and it came with Prime preinstalled, this led to me do more research and eventually figure out that you could manually update the firmware.

    • My TV updated itself the other morning when turning it on, glad to have prime on there so I dont need the Telstra box any more

    • We originally bought this model back in March, and returned it within a week as we weren't happy with the picture quality. We upgraded to the 55P8S, which is a much better TV, although admittedly it did cost an extra $400.

Interestingly enough, the 55P8S has had an update today and now has Prime directly installed as an app on the TV. I'm assuming that the issue was across multiple TCL models, so it could be resolved for the 50P8M too. Worth checking.

Also had issues with the Disney app not running on TCL. In the end we have up and cancelled Disney as casting is too jerky.

      • Just checked and mine has a new update too.

I had a similar issue with Disney+. Before updating the firmware I could load the app but whenever I tried to play a movie it just loaded indefinitely. Once I updated the firmware it worked perfectly. Not sure what the issue was originally but works now.

        • Cool - that's good to know. Thanks.

    • Thank you for this file, my TV updated recently and it still wasn't that build.

Where did it come from? I also have a 32" TCL in the bedroom which is insanely slow between hard resets so I wonder if something similar is available.

      • Someone on the Whirlpool forums got it directly from TCL I believe.

If your 32 is the P8M is might work, I think I read someone used the same firmware for their 75. Though I've only tried it on my 50 so do so at your own risk.

    • I have 43P8M which I assume has the same Android TV OS. I can find PrimeVideo at Google Play Store, download and use without problems. Same thing that I do find it is very slow, especially booting apps for the first time.

  • Hmmm should I impulse buy this now or continue waiting till Apr 2021….

      What happens in april 21?

        What happens in april 21?

        Covid 20 probably. :(

    • +4

Do you know what impulse buying is? if you have even been planning on getting a new TV that's planning to buy in the next year not an impulse buy at all.

      • +1

you tell em Bundy! What the true OzBargain spirit is

  • Still waiting for a good bargain for the 55" though!

    • -2

      This is the old model

  • Is this any good for gaming with PS4 pro? I have a Bravia 4K HDR from 2017 but want to have another one for the bedroom.

  • -3

oh they missed having this priced at this amount in June on the 9th would of got it just for the memes, oh well i guess there is always next year, no point buying a new tv for next gen consoles when the games are not even out to see what devs favor more higher frame rates or better resolution

lol downvoted for what it was a 420 69 joke and just stating the obvious for people thinking of upgrading TV's for those next gen consoles

  • This or the Kogan 50" XU9220?

    • While I haven't used the Kogan, I do have this exact TCL. I have no issues with it and would absolutely buy it again without hesitating. While TCL are generally a cheapish brand (compared to LG, Sony, etc), they are a large brand that manufactures their own products. I believe Kogan on the other hand rebrand products with their own branding from various factories. This isn't to say Kogan is bad at all, but I would much rather prefer a larger company that specialises and manufactures their own electronics. Mine has been flawless and I have no issues recommending this TV for a sub-$500 Android TV. Also see my above comment at the top if this doesn't come with Prime installed (or have it in the Google Play store).

Have this and it's a good deal and really good value imo for this price bracket, though I don't think there are many stores that have stock (if any, called a couple weeks ago and the system said was sold out nationally) so fyi it will likely be delivery on top.

  • Android OS is slow on this thing. Google assistant used to work when I first set it up now I can't turn it on with Google assistant, have to use the remote but my google hub can turn it off though.
Also, my old tv used to turn on and off when turning on the Xbox [HDMI CEC ] this one doesn't although it's turned on on setting.
Soundbar also only turns on 80% of the time with HDMI ARC other times I need to use the remote.
But overall it's a okay tv and I paid $590 last month.
For $420, I would buy it.
I downloaded Prime with no issues with the Play store.

  • Bloody bargain

  • How would this compare the Kogan's equivalent? My daughter is looking for a TV as just moved out of home. https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-50-smart-hdr-4k-uhd-led-t…

    • The new TCL models have good reviews.

Thanks, ordered 1 for my son living room tv, been checking on Eko, Linsar brands but price still too high.
    50”
    HDR
    Android
    $433 delivered.

I know HDR for this price range is nothing but at least it compatible with my plex collections.

Even if this is equal to kogan, you save yourself shipping time and warranty.

    • +1

TCL is a decent brand comparing to Eko, Linsar, Kogan

  • How would this compare to a Hisense p7

    • +1

      $250 cheaper

    • $250 less pixels

  • Ive got a 7 yr old Soniq, im guess this is a lot better right?

  • +1

This or the FFalcon 50UF1 for similar price? Looks like this is better deal with less latency lag (6ms vs 9.5) and quad core android vs dual core linux

    • Falcon is jbhifi homebrand. TCL at least have a reputation

      • FFalcon is made by TCL.

  • I brought 75P8MR in late April. If you worry about Disney+ and Prime, it is no longer an issue - just update firmware to the lastest one. Detailed info can be found on whirlpool:

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/9j584n83

The only issue I have is HDR - sometimes pictures are too bright so unwatchable. The only solution is to change mode to "PC" mode

    Quite happy with others

Been trying to get this TV, cheers op.

  • OOS

    • Yeah added to cart, paid via a gift card then the screen went blank. Timing is everything, stuck with a gift card now!

      • I was about to buy a gift card, so decided to refresh the page one last time to check it was still on stock, showed OOS! Ok no need to bother anymore.

Damn. I paid $460 for this TV at HVN a month or two ago. Happy with the TV - upgraded from a 2013 32" Samsung. No comparison. Much faster. Would buy again, especially at this price. It's a solid, good-value-for-money unit. No complaint from me.

  • Is it gone?……https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/tcl-50p8m-50-4k-uhd-smart-led-tv

  • Got one of these back in Nov19 with the $380 GG deal. Was a bit slow in accessing features and pic quality was not the best.
Made a warranty claim to TCL thru GG and the response was quick and helpful. Applied the firmware update mentioned above and it transformed the TV. Very impressed with it now.

  • F it got ozbargained

    • I'm still going to walk into a store tomorrow and see what's around.
Less Ozbargain competition up here so I may get lucky.

    What a joke gone already

I bought this TV back in Dec 19 (pre zombie days) when Ebay used to have their 20% sales with Bing Lee. Got it for $436.

Generally very happy with the quality of the picture. Unsure if it is 100Hz, I do not think so though.

Thanks for the tips for the firmware updates, I will give them a go.

If these are back in stock, they are not a bad TV for the price.

  • It took me 3+ months to get an order for this from The Good Guys….. there’s limited stock available on this one

    Best of luck finding one

  • Mine has already been shipped.
