Hmmm… may use it in a Synology NAS. Synology's website compatibility Chart says it’s ok.

    • Same here. But does this require the pin mod like the other 12Tb Reds?

      • +2

Do you need to pin mod in Synology? I didn't in my QNAP…

        • Not sure…..
Saw this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/551895 and some comments suggested a mod maybe required for using it in a NAS; thats a red drive.

So I'm assuming with this black drive you can just disassemble and put into the NAS straightaway.

          • +2

@tomvghs: You may need pin mods for Desktop PC's, but not the Synology range that features on ozbargain regularly (918+ etc)

            • @hypie: Yep okay.
              I have 918+. Perfect thanks.

  • So tempting… but I don't need this…

    • +10

Don't get it. When you do need one youll be able to get a similar-sized SSD or new console.

      • +2

It's not just for the Xbox, that's branding nonsense. It's a regular 12tb drive so you can either use it as an external USB drive hooked to your PC or take it out of the enclosure (void warranty if you break clips)

  • slapping that upvote button for NAS

  • +18

    I don't need this….

Sometimes I swear I would save more money if I just stayed off Ozbargain

    • +9

Don't buy it. Save your $$$ for something else unless you need it. Maybe a new-gen console or just save it for something you will get more out of.

    • +2

      100% would save money.

    • +1

      yep.
      you don't need this
now go buy something else you probably dont need

  • +1

Would this be a good drive to shuck and use as a gaming/mass media drive in a PC?

    • +1

      Yes

    • +3

Good for games but not as good as a ssd, overkill for media.

  • Very good deal

  • -1

2 coming my way, 1 for backup of the first!

  • If you just need a 12TB drive. Save yourself $100 and get the WD 12TB off Amazon.

    • +9

That’s an inferior drive. It might not be what people need

    • +1

Depends if you want it to store media (other deal) or if you want it to store games (this one), this drive is way faster.

  • How doss this pit against the barracuda pro?

    • +1

Two different beasts - Barracuda pro aimed more at your desktop/prosumer fields. - good for holding games, data etc.

The Ultrastar DC is a Datacentre drive designed for high write workloads. Personally I'd go the Seagate deal that's been posted on here before due to it being a faster drive and I doubt I'd touch the sides of it's working life. But if you're going to use this in a NAS situation the Ultrastar might be a better choice for you.

    • HC DC520 is meant for data centers, barracuda pro is for desktop.

  • thought it had an esata connection for a minute.

  • 395 for prime now

    • Same. With that sweet sweet Cashrewards cashback it's even better!

  • +1

Can’t decide I need this or save $85 to get an inferior drive, can we actually sell the 3 month game pass?

  • Why do you need a dedicated HDD for Xbox can't you plug any USB HDD into it?

    • +3

It's just branded for Xbox, you can use any drive but obviously this is a fast drive, and quite large.

  • Does it need to be plugged into AC? Or can the xbox power it?

    • +2

Based on the photos and type of drive it is, it needs its own power adapter (included).

  • Great deal! Very tempted to purchase but I have no need for one. I currently have the 4TB for my computer and it runs great. Hope someone finds a use for this.

  • Going in circles wondering if I should grab this…

Great price for this, but along with prices of SSD's and even SD cards getting a lot cheaper (even compared to pre-covid prices) is this a sign we should see some decent reductions in price later this year?

    • It is $1428 for an 8TB 870 QVO. So even if it drops by 10%, are you still happy to pay up $1285 for an 8TB SSD? https://www.pccasegear.com/products/50719/samsung-870-qvo-2-…

      • I meant for storage in general, SSD prices for the same capacity are still high but we're seeing some good prices all around for storage at the moment.

    • SSD is expensive?

  • +1

This is an ideal steams library disk. Which is what i would purchase it for myself.

  • Does this mean I can use this for my PS4 as an external? It looks like a normal usb3 to usbA cable to connect

    • Yes, it's an ordinary USB3 hard drive enclosure. Can use it on any device that works with USB.

      • I don’t think the ps4 takes any higher than 8TB - might wanna check

  • Also available at NewEgg for $376.20 if anyone misses out. $417.20 delivered or $420.08 express.

    • Newegg charges $41 shipping to Aust.
Edit NVM, saw the above :-)

    • +1

Newegg increased their price to $498 + posting as soon as the Amazon deal ended. Coincidence, no? LOL.

  • Just checked the spec sheet, can anyone elaborate the difference? The workload for this ultrastar HC520 is more than 2 times (2.5m hrs) than that of the $310 WD120EMFZ posted earlier yesterday. 550TB/year vs 180TB/year seems like worth the extra, not to mention the higher speed (250MB/s vs 210MB/s SW).

  • its $395.79 delivered if you have prime… at least thats why i'm seeing…

    • Non-prime users have to pay for delivery I guess?

      • +1

yeah, just usually its mentioned in the post…

      • +1

You pay $7 for 1 month Prime which is cheaper than the postage they generally charge.

Don't get me wrong, I love a big HDD but who is buying a 12 TB for their Xbox? I have over 100 games installed myself on just the native XB1X drive with a USB-powered 4 TB WD portable.

They are close to capacity, but no-one should legitimately NEED 100 games installed at any one time, you simply aren't going to browse that many. Not just baby-sized indie games either, big downloads like RDR II, Assassin's Creed Odyssey and 2 of the CoD games.

Plus this thing is external powered, so you'll need to find ANOTHER powerpoint. I have no speed issues whatsoever with the 4 TB portable, you literally can't tell which drive a game is on.

I get it, if you are still on dial-up you want to pre-load your games, but anyone with NBN should gobble up game downloads easily.

As a NAS drive, I must have been lucky but I bought 4 x 12 TB 7200 rpm Iron Wolfs in Jun 2019 for $147 each. I haven't been tracking prices closely but storage appears to have increased greatly due to COVID, and I wouldn't be in any hurry to buy new NAS storage unless I was desperate. I basically bought a 48TB Synology 8-bay NAS for $2K last year, and WD are trying to sell one 12 TB drive for $400, external tray or otherwise.

    • +2

      4 x 12 TB 7200 rpm Iron Wolfs in Jun 2019 for $147 each

      where/how?

      • +1

I'm interested in that myself :)

      • +2

Maybe 2nd hand, there is no way that was for brand new disks.

        • +1

I know right! There was no deal posted on ozb, so it can't be real!

      • dahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

      • Amazon in June 2019. Not second-hand, brand new, I opened them myself.

What's with the down-votes on this place? I'm not some stirrer, just honest information, it's like people get all cut on a DISCOUNTS website when someone got a good price for something.

Anyway my point stands, for an XB1, who is buying a 12 TB drive? NAS fine.

  • +3

Thanks op canceled the other wd 12tb and got this one instead.

    • Did the same.

    • This one is worth the extra $

    • Me too, will try to sell to 3 month pass lol

  • +1

    Just ordered one,

This ships from the US, so will it come with US wall socket power adaptor or AU?

Can I replace the US power adaptor for an AU one?

    • +1

You can contact WD support, and if you ask nicely they will send you one out.

      • Ok thank you I will ask them

    • Sometimes the adaptor comes with different sockets you can switch over, hopefully this one does.

    • Can confirm, comes with US adaptor.

  • +1

shucks! had to get one since there is nothing much to spend during COVID Lockdown !

  • Item still available for lesser price. Placed order for $369.31 including delivery with amazon prime.

    • +1

damnit! got a screenshot of your ordered price?

  • They just discounted for $30 more lol, cancelled and put another order!

  • Its unavailable now

  • Arrived today! That was quick!

    • why the neg, hater?

    • Mine is not even shipped yet.

  • Mine cane in today but came with a US power adaptor :(

Anyone know where I can buy an AU power adapter that will work with it from?

Tried contacting WD support but your just on hold for ages.

  • back in stock @431.11 AUD

  • Anyone actually using this with their Xbox? When the Xbox is in "Instant On" mode the drive keeps spinning on and off every minute or even less!?

Even on "Power Saving" mode the light on the drive stays on…

  • how do i buy wd's heatsink separately?

  • Mine arrived today, no mention of 3-month membership of Xbox game pass ultimate anywhere on the box
Does yours have this written on the box?

    • +2

should be a small card in the box with redemption code. It says redeem by date on product packaging but can't see any date? Timeless??

  • Got the power supplies from wd direct today for the d10s, also comes with international plugs that are interchangeable.

    Shenzhen Branded - Model ADS-40RJ-12

    • Got mine today, I'd got the drive working prior to this with a US>AU adapter for the original supplied plug and it seemed much quieter with this than the replacement unit. Original power supply was 12v .9A New one is 12v 3A. Fans are a lot louder with the new unit!

From my limited understanding of electrickery the extra power should not be a problem, if the volts were up it would explain louder fans, (ie they would be over clocked!) but amps should not AFAIK?
      Anyone else??

      • Just tested again old vs new. Noise is now the same regardless of which power supply in use.

No idea why it was initially so quiet. Temperature hasn't changed and it definitely wasn't my imagination.

I was wondering why people were complaining about the noise as it was basically silent. Now I know!

  • +1

Well done! Have you got their contact info, phone or email or webform?
It's good of WD to do that, it would seem to be more amazons issue to me.

  • +1

Register the product, then contact their support, then provide the drive serial number, you will have to go through their process.

  • When does the 3-month membership of Xbox game expire?

    • +1

It sais the offer must be redeemed by the date shown on the sticker on the front of the package. However the package has no such sticker on both of mine.
