  • I got one of these thinking I’d only need the Now subscription (for 2nd TV) but after the 10 day trial it’s blocked me from using Foxtel on the Now box and requires me to add Multiroom to my package.

    • +2

Doesn't change much, but you only need to add 'multiscreen' ($15pm vs $25). I called up Foxtel and asked if they could add it as I have been a long time customer and with Covid and everyone being at home, having 2 screens would be great. They obliged. Give em a call, be polite, and see what you can get.

      • +1

I’ll do that, cheers mate 👍🏼

  • Anyone know if this would work with steam link (and connect a ps4 controller to)

May be a weird question as its not the primary functiin, but looking for a reasonably priced streaming+steamlink box

    • Just…buy a steam link and connect it to one of the spare ports on the tv?

      • That was discontinied quite a while ago, that also doesnt cover the streaming portion.
More trying to compare this to the vodafone tv and work out which will be the best all rounder from steam link and streaming (and if either will even be able to download the steamlink app%connect controller via BT)

        • +2

I have the original Steamlink as well as a VTV and even though the specs of the Steamlink are worse than the VTV, it’s hands down a much better experience with the Steamlink.

Even better if you have a Nvidia GPU as you can use Moonlight on the Steamlink which is even better. There was far too much lag on the VTV to make it playable, even with the claimed lag not showing to be too much worse than the Steamlink.

  • Vodafone TV got usb port. I can either use it to connect Bluetooth keyboard or usb devices.

    • +1

Interesting comparison. USB port on the VTV is much more limited now, since the device can no longer read from NTFS/ExFAT formatted drives. That rules out any file over 4GB which hurts for watching those high quality linux distros. Much less of a strength than it was at launch. Yeah you can still use USB keyboard/mouse/gamepad, but you can get bluetooth versions pretty cheap these days. Are there many other devices you'd actually expect to use on something like this?

As for the bluetooth keyboard… why would you need to use a USB port for a bluetooth keyboard? Both the VTV, Foxtel Now have bluetooth. Do you mean something more like the Logitech keyboards (unifying receiver)? Hell, even the XB1 controller has native bluetooth and will connect without issues.

      • I have 4 LCD tvs in my house which are not smart TVs. They have neither Bluetooth or can view 4k. So people with older TV would find Vodafone Tv still very useful.. :)

        • I agree… but bluetooth devices would connect to either VTV or Foxtel Now. Both devices have that functionality. I'm not sure why you're mentioning 4k? Both devices have 4k output if required.

          • @ashanrath: Sorry what I meant I dont have a movies greater than 4gb. Most of them are sub 3.5gb big and I'm very happy with that.. Anyway let's now talk about VTV here. That is a different deal… hehe

      • Is there a workaround for the USB issue? I tried a couple of USBs to sideload Amazon prime but couldn't get the USB to read after formatting multiple times.

        • Just use FAT32… I have no issues side loading stuff from USB sticks :)

        • FAT32 is your best bet. I've had no issues with that. Alternatively, use a file manager to load up a network share and get it that way.

    • Am I missing something here, everything I’ve read says the Foxtel Now Box has a USB port too?

      • +1

It definitely does… I just checked mine then

  • Doesnt work with foxtel go right?

    • Foxtel go is the freebie foxtel for your telephone that comes with a normal foxtel subscription.

It is also what we use with Kodi if we can't be arsed paying for multiroom.

Foxtel Now is Foxtel over internet as a standalone.

  • Excuse my ignorance, but what is the difference between Foxtel Now and Foxtel Go - I thought one was replacing the other? Why do we need this box when you can just use foxtel app? Is this just for non smart tvs?

    • +1

Foxtel Go is included with a regular Foxtel subscription. Foxtel Now is a standalone subscription that doesn't come with an IQ box or anything.

    • +2

Foxtel Go is streaming for your phone when you have a Foxtel satellite service (also casting is only available if you have multiroom/boxes on your satellite service).

Foxtel Now is a standalone service which will work on a phone AND TV directly.

      • +1

..but uses the foxtel GO app (foxtel now)

    • What duyfken has said is correct. I might add that if you have multiroom in your foxtel subscription you can also login to the Foxtel Now app on 2017+ LG TV's. Not sure about other TV brands.

      • Interesting. Does that then "block" the 2nd room's set top box from working, while you are logged in like that?

        • +1

Sorry, I think I've confused 'multiscreen' with 'multiroom'. I only had multiscreen access due to covid, which foxtel have taken away now.

But when I check foxtel it says "Multiroom iQ lets you watch Foxtel in another room on a second iQ4 or iQ3 box. If you subscribe to Multiroom iQ, you’ll also receive access to Multiscreen."

So it shouldn't block the 2nd set top box from working and will function independently.

  • Does this box work without foxtel subsription? Just wantt a box for chromecast, youtube and netflix

    • Yes, but voda tv seems allot better, I find that my one just doesn’t work as a cast sometimes, and I always have to login to my Foxtel account. I got mine for $10 on gumtree tho so not complaining

    • You'll need an account to set up but you don't need a subscription to use it.

      • It can set up without an account, just press the app button, then you can download apps from google play store

    • you dont need a foxtel account to setup

    • +1

This box works fine, but you'll get a signin screen on startup every time, and the Home button will take you to the FoxtelNow signin screen.

To solve this, I just installed HomeButton mapper, Startup manager, and set them both to Sideload Launcher (all from the PlayStore).
Now it all just goes straight to Sideload app, but you could also set it to go to Netflix or any other app you have installed.

      P.S.
      - I haven't been able to install any other Launchers so far — if anyone has please add details below ?
      - Also, any suggestions on how to disable the FoxtelNow signin / launcher ?

  • Can you use a trial account for foxtel now to set up and then continue to use Netflix, Stan etc once the subscription is up?

    • Yes

    • you dont need a foxtel account to setup

  • can I record tv to usb on these?

  • +1

Would be wary buying one of these - going to be obsolete soon and it’s confusing with the Foxtel mumbo jumbo of products

I bought one thinking would work with existing Foxtel Cable but no and ended up with a brick as required another account and pay money to access content.

Intention was just to use this on a tv in another room instead of Foxtel multi room.

Instead just used Foxtel Go - app only for existing Foxtel Cable customers. Up until June 30th allowed you to cast to Tv thanks to Foxtel generosity around Covid19.

Now for that you have to pay $15 a month (multiscreen) for functionality that just should be included Ffs.

And then they added Binge… $10 a month for basically all of the above….

Your mileage may vary and depends on what you want this for but if you just want a basic streaming box with a remote would get a Vodafone one or an amazon fire stick. Just wish google would release a chrome cast with a remote…

    • I believe Google are releasing a Chromecast like that but I may be wrong.

Out of curiosity, what makes the VTV superior?

      • Just agreeing with OP (more around price). Have a Mibox as well for streaming - these are good as well but more pricey - round $100

  • +1

I have 2 of these which I bought to use with Plex. To use them you must give them credit card details to get an account from what I remember - and removing your credit card details from the account is a painful procedure as it can't be done by yourself…Once you have logged in common TV based media players (such as kodi) are locked down on the play store - to make things worse the Foxtel firmware with added bloatware is very clunky at best. I'd avoid these at all costs - I threw them to one side and bought a couple of Vodafone TV boxes…never looked back…..

    • +1

I’d only get this if you’re gonna get a Foxtel Now sub. It boots in to Foxtel Now every time.

  • +3

$49 is a good deal for this device but $72 for a VTV is money better spent.

  • JBHIFI refused to price match with Kogan just few weeks ago. Then I bought it from Kogan instead. It is really good!
But I notice I could only pair BT devices by disconneting the device first. There is no option to go back "device settings" unless siging up a foxtel account.

  • I've got a lot of subscriptions - Netflix, Stan, Prime, Kayo and then broadband. Is it a wise idea to get the Foxtel NBN + Netflix + Channels package for $149 dollars per month? Is anyone else having a difficult time with so many subscriptions? Thanks.

    • Depends what the alternative is. Aussie Broadband is $79/month for 50/20 unlimited data. You can get Foxtel Now for $25/month.

If Foxtel has the content that you watch on Stan and Prime then you could ditch those. How much is Sports on Foxtel?

Is your Amazon Prime sub free with your Amazon Prime free postage sub?

      • Yeah. Prime is free with the postage subscription. I think that's another 65 dollars per year. I think the 149 is inclusive of sports. On the flip side, kayo is 25 dollars pm.

        • +1

I know sports on Foxtel Now is $29/month. Go figure.

        • I have Foxtel Basic and get Kayo from Telstra for $15pm. Have Chromecasts on every TV, so cheaper than the sports pack, and no need to pay extra for Multi-room. I think the Foxtel Basic is worth it for the IQ4 (and Walking Dead!).

  • JB hi-fi states that it works with Netflix, Stan, YouTube, etc? Is this like a major updated version?

    • That’s pretty standard for this version.

  • Can't install Amazon Prime on here? (on the box)

  • Does Kayo work on this Foxtel Now box?
Kayo said no, others mentioned side loaded or something etc
Anyone actually use Kayo on this box?

Kayo Sports has been a very overrated service, very buggy and barely compatible with countless devices.

    • Kayo Sports has been perfect on my Apple TV. It has never missed a beat. People usually experience bugs when they side-load apps made for other devices.

Overrated? I don't think so. It's a great service with live, on-demand, minis & highlights of all the sports Foxtel carries.

  • Hey guys!

With those that have this, the foxtel now box website hasnt been updated in ages, so it still doesnt state Netflix on the site…

Just wondering if netflix works well and casts on chromecast 4k. also main one is Amazon prime, cant find anywhere if amazon prime can be downloaded or casted?

OR should i spend a bit more money and get either Vodafone tv or mi box s?

    Cheers!

    • +1

VTV is the direct competitor with a built in tuner. It's the better choice for apps overall, although it doesn't have Amazon Prime Video (needs to be side loaded). Mi Box S has Amazon Prime Video but lacks ethernet and a tuner.

      • Can you side load apps such as Amazon Prime onto Foxtel now box?

    • Netflix works perfectly on this box at 4K and Chromecast too.
Only downside is the Foxtel start screen, but this can be bypassed quite easily (see previous post).

  • Bought a Vodafone TV for $20 more. Better value imo

  • Given its android based, has anyone tried installing a vpn on it? Does it work?
