Laptop for Gaming and Video Editing - Budget $1500

Hello everyone,

Hopefully someone will be able to provide some help. I am currently looking for a laptop for gaming, video capture and video editing.Sadly, because of travelling a lot for work, I can not use a desktop. So needs to be a laptop.Hopefully , someone is able to provide some help. Here are the details:

  • My budget is around $1500 (Hopefully, lower , but willing to go to $2000 for an amazing deal).
  • Would prefer a retail store or reputable seller(direct from company). With travelling, if i have any warranty issues it would be easier to just drop into a local Jb Hi Fi than the whole online dilemma, plus why not support a local business ?

Hopefully someone is able to provide some suggestions, Either way , have a great day!

    • Thank you , sadly , not sure what would be recommended. From the comments people seem to argue the ones on sale are not worth it.

Agree, I think it will be hard to find a deal worth it from JB HiFi.

I'd keep an eye out for something like this - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/548714

        • Awesome, Thank you for the help. Will do.

For someone who is not up to date on computers. When it comes to specs what should i be looking for?
A tleast 16gb ram? SSD? I have no idea about processor or video card.

@Stocktake: You'll likely get some expert opinions shortly from others here but I would think that 16GB is a must for your use case. Ryzen processors seem to be the best value for performance over Intel. You will definitely need a dedicated graphics card hence the need for something like AMD Radeon RX 5600M/NVIDIA RTX 20xx/16xx. Most laptops in this range you will get an SSD but make sure it is and not a HDD.

@Stocktake: For your purposes 16GB is ideal. 8GB is too low but 32GB is overkill.
256GB SSD is probably acceptable but 512GB is preferable. You'll probably need a secondary drive if you're installing lots of games/saving lots of videos.
As for the video card, it depends on what you'll be playing. Considering your budget, GTX 1660 Ti or Radeon RX 5600M is probably the best you can do. Maybe the RTX2060

@FireRunner: I would seriously advise against getting this laptop. I purchased one (same model from the linked deal) and it has been nothing but issues - completely unstable and unfortunately I've found many people online with the same issues. In all honesty, outside of the YouTube reviewers, I am yet to find a single person who has said this model has been stable and usable for them.
Most people I've spoken with have ended the case in a refund because it's too risky to hope they will one day sort out the plethora of instabilities and issues, whilst in the meantime having an expensive paperweight instead of a laptop.

            • @FireRunner: Thank you for the help. I will keep an eye out.

Check out the the MSI GS65 Stealth Thin, personal experience I got this for my brother and he loves it. I would spec it up to 16gb RAM and upgrade the SSD capacity. If money allows the processor but depends on budget. Though I'm really digging the processors that AMD are comming out with. All up it ranges from $1300 (lower end) to up to $1700-1800 ish depending on the upgrades. I'm sure if you shop around you could get a good deal.

Another one is the Razor Blade Stealth, for your uses either i'd aim for the 15.6" model instead of the 13.3". More screen real estate works wonders for video editing workflow and gaming. However, if you regularly connect to a decent external screen for work then i'd prob opt for the smaller Razor Blade for portability reasons. Though this one can be a bit pricey, not too sure if it'll be within your max $2k buget but shop around first.

    Hope this helps! Happy Hunting!

  • Unsure if this is allowed but I'm selling the Dell G5 15 SE I bought last month, practically new, on the Classifieds area. Based on the discussion here this laptop has been recommended and seems to be in-line with what you're after. The Ryzen CPU would make a good fit for the tasks you're looking to perform. Take a look if you're interested.
