Is There a Recruitment Blacklist in Melbourne?

I live in Melbourne and have applied for jobs since Oct 2018 and haven't heard from even a single company. had applied for 20+ jobs. I finally landed a job due to a person I knew from Sydney and I ended up working for a company remotely. In my 2018 gig I had resigned a job without telling the recruiter. I am not sure if this is valid. Am I becoming paranoia?

20 job applications since Oct 2018? Rookie numbers

    • +6

yeah try 200 then we have something to talk here

Each company has their own blacklist. The blacklists aren't shared.

I'd say paranoia… I've spoken to a recruiter once and they harassed me to leave my current job every 4-6 months..

  • +6

    Yeahnah.
Maybe with that agency, otherwise if you have a small industry where everyone knows everyone that may be the issue. If its a big agency like Hays that has large portions of the market it may be very detrimental.

But yeah 20+ applications is nothing in this day and age, I was pushing 20+ a week for 2 months before i got my first job out of uni

  • +9

The issue is the number of your job applications, if I lost my job I'd feel like my efforts have started at about 100 applications.

    • thanks. I know what you mean. But we don't get those many jobs per month

      • +5

What does that mean. I think you should try harder at applying.

I got a job in a month of applying, but I put in about 40 QUALITY applications.

20 in 2 years? Sounds lazy mate if I am honest. Insanely lazy. Not sure what thay says about your work ethic. Perhaps you need to reflect and work on improving that.

I applaud OP as he isn't abusing govt unemployed benefits with tough job quotas people have to look for .

20+ job applications since Oct 2018?

Even 20+ job applications a month isn't too many nowadays.

Either you are too picky or aren't really interested in finding a job.

Wouldn't hurt to get a tin foil hat - just in case.

    • Not so loud, cant hear the government stealth helicopters coming

    • lol I get your point.

  • +1

    Yes there is a blacklist.

    • where and how is it maintained?

      • +7

        The Australian Secret Intelligence Services

        https://www.asis.gov.au/

      • It's maintained either by software or recruiters themselves.

if you think recruiters have time to read every resume.. guess again.

if your name consistently comes up in algorithm and your resume read poor the first time - recruiters are probably not going to read it the second time - at least not for some time.

      • Depends on what service or recruitment database the employers use. For our industry, we have our own group.

You really think Recruiters could organise something like a blacklist???? They can hardly organise themselves!

    • it's a small world. maybe they talk

      • +2

They couldn’t care less about your resume - you’re one in a thousand I’m afraid. If there was a blacklist it would be internal and for existing employees that have done something wrong - sharing any of that confidential information is against the law and something highly unlikely to happen.

    • Good niche opportunity for an app - blacklistr

    • Within the recruitment firm, yes they do have.
If you are suggesting an industry-based blacklist — they would not want to be a part of that database-sharing, as it would leave their candidates open for poaching by other agencies; There is no real ethics against this, and pushing candidates deemed 'unreliable or undesirable' to their business clients would not be a barrier, they will just push those candidates to less desirable workplaces, and make a commission either way.

I did 20 applications in 1 month whilst holding a full time job.

100% it's your resume. You won't know unless either someone tells you what's wrong or you figure it out after 50+ in a month or two.

    • Another possibility for me. Will send my resume for rewview. Also my resume is kinda loaded might look fake as well who knows

  • 20 applications over 2 years.

Sounds like you are applying for rather specialist positions, if thats all you are interested in with applications.

Based on that have you tried contacting the companies and asking in a nice way, what they found was lacking in your application.

No harm is asking in a nice way.

Probably get better insight than we can guess here

    • It’s been a while but as you said there is no harm thanks

  • 20? You mean per week right?

  • +1

"You'll never work in this town again!"

  • +1

You should be applying for AT LEAST 20 jobs per week.

I will put this down as a "user issue" and file it away

  • How many pages is your resume? I heard it's best to stick to 1-2 pages unless you have over 10 years of experience.

How readable is your resume by machines? How does it score on a site like Resume Worded? There are HR systems that scan all resumes received and spit out the top 10-20 possible candidates according to requirements set by HR. Are you sending a tailored version of your resume for each job application to reach the top of that list?

    • Yes I am tailoring my resume for each job and its 3 pages long. Try to use keywords as well.

  • You are legally allowed to see your file on any agency database. They all have a privacy officer, all will send you a full copy of their database file.

    Try it.

I know you can be blacklisted within an agency across all branches in Australia. I’ve tested this quite a number of times, applying for the same role with this particular agency and their competitors in various states, the competitor will at least talk to me if not progressing my application but this firm will not even acknowledge my application let alone talk to me.
