the fish also in a lockdown inside aquarium :(

Better than running wild like moronic people.

  • Something fishy about this?

… bad jokes aside I have been wanting a tank one day but wanted to ask experts if any are self cleaning? I remember being young and having to take fish out with a scooper and keep them in water while we cleaned the tank, has this evolved? I see youtube videos of huge tanks in houses and think no way they are being cleaned.

you should clean tanks while the fish are still in them. just do water changes, scrub algae etc. if you get fish that eat algae, you just need to do water changes and the occasional substrate clean.

lots of easy to follow online resources if its something you are interested in

A well maintained aquarium can be surprisingly low maintenance.
Larger tanks are easier to keep under control than small ones, because you are more likely to catch any issues before they get out of control.
I’ve found the key is not to overstock in terms of plants, fish or feeding… and it is worth spending more at the start on a bigger filter. Or a second filter!
I have a 400 litre tank that takes about 20mins of maintenance every 10 days or so. It has around 150 small fish, hundreds of shrimp and low maintenance plants. To keep the water crystal clear I’m running two large external canister filters. The biggest task is scrubbing algae from the glass!

here is a pic of how it looks at the moment

          Nice! Looks great mate!

          That looks awesome!

@FreshPrinceofKP: Thanks guys. It’s been going now for 8+ years, started off with pressurised CO2 and fancy plants, but with kids taking up more time and energy over the years, I have shifted to a priority for lower maintenance while still looking interesting enough for the family to enjoy.

Here is a pic I took just now - I realised the earlier one was from just before a major algae clean ;)

            new photo

            • @picogary: Ah looks incredible though. I am hoping to get into some aquascaping to some degree with this new tank :)

              • @SueyJitSu: Go for it! This seems like a decent starting point, and you'll probably find local aquariums not too far from home who specialise in planted tanks, where you can get additional advice along the way.
If you are going for heavier planting, you will find that the lights and filter on this tank will need upgrading at some point.
Start small though (as in, don't try to achieve too much early on) and you can easily have a great looking setup without going crazy. Choose some nice rocks or wood, make appropriate plant selections for your projected maintenance routine and a few fish to match and there will be lots of fun to be had.

                • @picogary: Thanks for the tips man.
I'll definitely take it step at a time 🙂

        • Nice job…my Africans would love that tank. :)

I have only been getting into this since lockdowns, since more time at home and it entertains the kids a little bit.

Yeah I think there is always a need for some manual maintenance for an aquarium. No matter what type you have.
How often you have to clean depends on the type of fish you have and how good your tank is filtered etc. Goldfish being the most popular starter fish, but I believe they can also be the grubbiest.
From what I have read so far, the bigger the better actually. Because changes in the water will not effect the fish so quickly in a larger tank, compared to a smaller one. Hence why I am upgrading.
Another factor is the type of filtration you use. Most tanks come with some filter media (Wool, Carbon etc), but they usually are not the best quality. Again, from what I read, you're better off getting higher quality filter media (like Marinepure for bio media, and Polyfilter for mechanical and chemical media).

Either way, no matter the type of tank or filtration used … manual cleaning of sorts is always needed. Water changes (never %100 change), and using a gravel cleaner are always necessary I believe.

      • I agree with much of this…
Water changes in particular can be around 20-30% of tank volume every 7-10 days, and if you have decent filtration and a population of shrimp, you’ll never need to clean the gravel! The only catch with shrimp is you’re limited to keeping smaller fish, otherwise the shrimp become an easy (and expensive) meal ;)

I've been rocking a couple tanks now.

The 500+L requires a 20-30% water change and filter clean every 6 weeks. Otherwise it's fully self sustaining with corydoroas and Congos breeding every fortnight.

The 150L Axolotl tank is completely self-sustaining. No heater, no water changes, no filter cleaning. It's been going on 2+ years now and we even have cherry shrimp breeding in it…

          • @TogTogTogTog: that sounds great!
There's a real satisfaction when the tank just keeps on going with minimal intervention, and it's always nice when the breeding kicks in.

  • Looks like similar capacity to my 620T bit in wider form. Good tanks overall love the curved glass.

  • Could you explain how you got it for $319?

    • $319 is for the 76L tank and cabinet which has the sale price of $419.
Just add to cart and go to the checkout. If you create a member account (it's free), then a discount code applies at the checkout automatically and should add a $100 discount.

      • Thanks for that. I was just about to jump on it with a store quite far away thinking it was a great deal but actually the standard price everywhere else… :/

I don't think that comes with the cabinet as well though?

          • @SueyJitSu: Very good point, that makes it worth it. Ordered, thanks!

            • @Hybroid: Hehe - you're welcome :)
It was my reasoning to pull the trigger too. Free cabinet! Wooo! Haha

            • @Hybroid: Or get on Gumtree and buy a used tank for like $50-100 and get like a 200L+.

              • +1

@TogTogTogTog: No thanks. There's a particular joy in setting up something brand new from scratch.

Also, you won't get anything decent or complete for that price point. Even double that, many of those tanks will require extensive cleaning process and potentially silicone resealing to avoid leaks etc. Not to mention any nasties that might remain. Not worth the hassle for me.

                • @Hybroid: I disagree. If anything being on Ozbargain you'd think people would prefer a bargain over paying more for something brand new.

Cleaning a tank isn't rocket science, it really isn't that hard to wash em down. Hell multiple stores round Canberra have been caught reselling used tanks as new.

Taking a quick look round the ACT I see 4-5 tanks that are 200L+ and under $100. Granted you'd need to buy a filter, heater and light, but like you said 'there's a particular joy in setting up something'.

                  • @TogTogTogTog: To each their own mate. Getting a bargain on a brand new unit is still a bargain.

                    • @Hybroid: Buying a poorly reviewed overpriced tank 'on-sale' isn't a bargain, but each their own.

                      • @TogTogTogTog: Where does one find reviews for fish tanks?
I had a poke around but couldn't find any for the lifestyle 127.
Would be good to know where to get that kind of info for the future :)

                        • @SueyJitSu: Just picked mine up, it's pretty decent for the price. Definitely not premium quality but you get what you pay for. Happy with it though so thanks again for posting.

                          • @Hybroid: Hehe picked mine up today too. In fact I've just finished putting the cabinet together 😅
                            No wuckas 🙂

    • i wish we can choose not to get the base and pay maybe $50 less

  • guys, what about noise? silent pumps are too expensive? thinking about one in the bedroom but worried about noise

    • +1

Reviews say not good for a bedroom. But most pumps in a enclosed cabinet shouldn't make enough noise to notice.

      • you hear the water trickling from pump outlet not the pump, and if you top up water to pump outlet you don’t even hear that ….

        • Wut? Pumps use electricity to drive an impeller which creates noise. The water leaving the outlet is more a user choice, would you like the water to fall/trickle into your tank, mount your outlet above the water, if you don't then below. Regardless the actual mechanics of the pump will still create noise…

          • @TogTogTogTog: Btw, this helped me a LOT.
You can silence nearly every pump of some doust grease on the impeller shaft. No more vibrations :p

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: Interesting, I might try it next clean. Personally I have no noise issues with my filter and it does about 2800-3000L/hr. Trying to figure out a way to dampen my air pump though those things… blow lol. Any good suggestions for an ultra-quiet air pump with decent output?

              • +1

@TogTogTogTog: Tetra whisper by a long shot. Still humms though, maybe wrap it in bubble wrap or something insulating. (just dont block intakes)
