Look at the exclusives and see what tickle your fancy.

But but.. we have no idea what you’ll like.
Fine, I’ll make the decision for you. Buy an iPad and play Candy Crush.

Don't even bother with online games you'll get mauled by sweaty players

Go for PS4, better exclusives games with immersive story's.

Anyways do your own research too and browse metacritic and read reviews and watch youtube videos, the rest is up to you mate.

        • If he was going to do any of those things why would he have started this thread?

Only had to read the title and I knew the popcorn is on you.

On the one hand, the current/last-gen games are pretty decent on the PS4. They're well optimised, the exclusives are great, and the PS+ is an okay option. Knowing Sony's history, they will drop game production for the PS4 rather quickly (by June 2022). I don't think it's worth upgrading to the PS4 Pro anymore, unless the cost is negligible.

Don't buy an Xbox One X, it is discontinued, and will not officially support PS5/XSX (next-gen) games as far as we're told. Plus it's generally more expensive than the PS4 Pro/PS4/Xbox One S options.

However, the Xbox One S is going to be sold/continued for next-gen by Microsoft as the new low-end. So it will officially support PS5/Xbox Series X games. Plus it's got backwards compatibility with the 360 and original Xbox. Also it is the cheapest option to buy from last-gen. It can support 4K-HDR videos and BluRay, so a good TV Box alternative too.

You can also have the option of using something like the Nvidia Shield TV. One of the best TV Boxes, and it is somewhat competent at playing Android App/Games (sideload) and do some emulation too. I think this is the weakest option in this comment.

Last option is to use a HTPC. Example, use a Dell OptiPlex SFF (+ dGPU) and Windows10 Pro. It's more clunky. But it will do EVERYTHING. And the graphics are better than say Xbox One X. The forwards and backwards compatibility is best. But it requires effort on your part. And online matches can get annoying after a while, as cheaters become prominent.

        • +3

Why would the One X not support next gen when the One S will? Just because it's discontinued from production doesn't mean it stops existing. The Hardware of the X will be easier to downscale next gen games to than the S as well

          • @Ninternet: I was thinking the same thing, but here's why:

            USD $200 - Xbox One S (Digital)
            USD $300 - Xbox Series S (Digital)
            USD $500 - Xbox Series X (Disc)
…that's the new lineup from MS

            Xbox Series X: all next-gen games 4K/RayTracing/60fps
            Xbox Series S: all next-gen games 1440p/RayT/60fps
            Xbox One S: most next-gen games 1080p/No RT/30fps

They want people to move towards a subscription model for the lower-end hardware. However, even the XBS isn't guaranteed to get all next-gen titles, just most. But that's better than Sony's position on the matter, where they see it as a "clean slate" whereas MS sees things as a "transition".

I think the Xbox One X will end up getting most of the Xbox One S titles supported as well, but not guaranteed. And it might play them at the same fidelity as the XBS, so it might not upscale at all. The reason for this is because MS is trying to bury that console, they've apparently stopped manufacturing quite a while ago (well sales were never great for it), and they're pulling support. Instead of the Xbox One X they want people to use a Xbox Series S, where graphically they're kinda close, but in terms of core-components there's a huge difference (CPU, RAM, SSD). So yeah, people you've been warned : )

            • @Kangal: I doubt Xbox series X is actually going to deliver much in terms of games with Ray tracing

        • +1

All current Xbox models will be backwards supported, including the X1X, which is the most powerful by far.
Also, the backwards compatibility is achieved by software on Xbox (meaning you can continue to play the game and there is no input lag, etc.).
With the PlayStation 4 generation, Sony placed a big bet on streaming services to pick up some of the slack in terms of backwards compatibility.

PlayStation Now allows for players to stream selected games from PS2, PS3 and PS4. Originally a streaming-only feature, PlayStation Now does offer some PS4 games as downloads, but those with poor internet speeds need not apply and even those with great connections will find that input lag can cause issues in more reaction-based games.

Then there's Smart Delivery. You can research that.

For my money, I'd be getting a PC as it is always going to outpower a console, is upgradeable, has proper virtual reality (amazing) and has a far larger library of better priced games, but initial cost is higher.

If I do get a console next gen, I think it'll be xbox as it's shaping up to be the better console IMHO and just look at how the Xbox One went from it's beginnings to now. It became a great console even though it started behind the competition by a mile.

          • +1

@imurgod: To be fair, Sony is correct that it is better to focus on the future than the past. Hence no backwards compatibility.

Besides, Sony developed each console using custom architecture, then made the software stack according to that setup. So it's a little difficult to implement backwards compatibility, only to get no money return. Microsoft on the other hand have been pushing DirectX always. Even if the whole Xbox business bankrupts and fails, they do not care, because it means the industry is hooked on DirectX. And for that reason, it's actually very easy to run all Xbox games on new hardware. Sony may go this route in the future (x86 platform). But Game Streaming isn't a good solution, at least not until we get proper gigabit internet (with fast latency).

But I'm not sure backwards compatibility is the best argument for a console. You're talking Quantity, whilst there's a case to be made for Quality. It seems people are far more concerned with quality (hence walled ecosystems and exclusive titles). As for most game content that would be on Windows Platform (millions of retro games, flash games, indie titles, and later AAA-titles). Plus on Windows you can emulate most previous consoles, and also emulate/run Android Apps too. But if you want the latest and greatest, that seems to be on PlayStation these days (or iOS for mobile). Eventually they will trickle down to the PC either via a port, or emulation (eg Uncharted 2 is now playable on PC via emulation).

I feel like instead of getting an Xbox, for those quantity or legacy game support, a Gaming PC is better option. But you can't really compare it to a PS4/PS5 as that's competing in a different category/quality.

PS: Yes, I haven't forgotten about Nintendo.

            • -1

@Kangal: Fair points, although I disagree re quality. Xbox seems to be better positioned for future as well.

Still, both lack proper vr and I would still argue that pc has better quality and quantity than both consoles both in games and hardware and for me at least, being a sim racer, vr and compatabliity with high end sim racing hardware is paramount (niche, I know). Xbox is compatibile but sony has had issues and is silent on future compatabliity.

Lastly, it's becoming clear that console games are becoming more and more just rinse and repeat with the new and interesting IP being on all platforms anyway and far better on pc.

Console wars are counter productive anyway. Everything would be x-plat if console wars weren't a thing.

If you look at next gen consoles, they really haven't evolved much. Certainly not enough to warrant an upgrade.

              • @imurgod: To be honest, consoles will always take the backseat compared to PCs. But just because something is first doesn't mean it's the best. Just look at the iPhone, it wasn't the first in many ways, but the way it implemented things made it the best (from the first model to the latest).

I think the new gen will make significant inroads. The CPUs and API can keep up, not to mention the SSD. The GPU isn't too shabby either. What is restrictive now is the RAM amount. Well, that's the graphics/hardware part of it. Graphics isn't everything, just compare some "fun" game on the weak Nintendo Switch hardware and compare it to a "bland" game on the decently powerful Xbox One X. There are other details such as after-sales, ecosystem, controllers, accessories, etc etc.

  • +25

If money is no issue just wait few more months and make your decision when the next gen Xbox X and PS5 are out.

    • -1

OP, just wait for the PS6.

      • +6

Why bother? The PS7 is only a few years away!

Only downside, it will be a $2000 down payment and the deed to your house.

        But it's the PS7!
        Spider-Man exclusive already announced.
Play as the humble spider that started it all.

        • +1

OP said they are a noob. The most noobish thing they could do is call around asking to pre order a PS8.

    • +5

Why when the PS4/xbox will be cheaper and have a massive catalogue.

It's barely worth getting the new console in the first 2 years.

      • +1

Prev gen games will be backwards compatible (and probably optimized) on new hardware

    • +7

If money is no issue get a PC.

      • +10

If money is an issue, you'd still also get a PC.

        • Correct answer

    • +2

Or in a few months you could roam the streets looking for thrown out consoles. I got a Nintendo 64, PS1 and Gameboy off the streets around a decade ago lol.

    • +3

Should I play the PS1 to 4 first though? Or will I be able to understand it if I start with the PS5?

      • +1

Generally it's considered okay to skip the PS3 but the lore sort of rebooted on PS4 to cover most of the content you missed on PS3 anyway. PS5 should be a direct sequel to PS4 so you should be okay

  • +2

    All of them

  • +50

Get the same console as your friends so you can play together.

    • +2

What if he wants to get a console because he doesn't have any friends?

    • And you can exchange games with them.

    • Easily the best advice

  • +6

PS4 seems like it has the better choices in terms of exclusives for sure.

Not sure why you'd buy an Xbox at this stage.

    • +31

There's actually a few reasons why you'd buy an Xbox at this stage and considering OP's gaming experience.

If games don't end up tickling their fancy, the Xbox One S is a much better media player than the PS4. It plays CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays and 4K Blu-Rays as well as support for 4K Netflix and Prime video along with all your other standard media apps like Stan, Spotify, YouTube, etc.

Taking into account OP is entirely new to gaming, the One S has a much broader range of older titles that will still be new to them.

PlayStation always wins when it comes to current gen exclusives, but there are still a lot of positives for Xbox in this situation.

Also if gaming does in fact become a new hobby, theoretically all of the games will work on Series X with some free next gen upgrades in some cases as well.

      • +3

        CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays and 4K Blu-Rays

Does it play HD-DVD's as well?

        • +1

With the add-on HD-DVD player, YES!

        • +1

Bought a hddvd player and a week later the collective announced they'd no longer support it.

    • +35

"Not sure why you'd buy an Xbox at this stage."

      Game Pass.

      • +12

If you're new to gaming, get a Xbox One S / Digital and Game Pass.Great way to sample a quality library of games.

      • +8

OP if you're not familiar, Xbox Game Pass is kind of like Netflix for games. You pay a relatively small monthly fee, and then you can download and play as many of the included games as you want. It doesn't have every game (just like Netflix doesn't have every movie and TV show) but you'll almost certainly be able to find a bunch you might like from across a range of genres.

Per other comments here, a cheap Xbox plus a Game Pass subscription could be a very good way to dive right in.

    • +3

someone new to gaming would actually probably be better off with an Xbox and gamepass. Though it depends on what sort of games you like and just as importantly what your friends have. The OP hasn't provided any useful information to give a good recommendation one way or the other, would say it is 99% likely purely a troll post.

    • Then get the ps5 later and play them all backwards compatible up scaled to 4K with better loading times.

  • +2

For me if you want to play all your older xbox games, then Xbox, but if you want to play the newer games then PS4, largely as they have more exclusives, I don't really know any exclusives on xbox that I wanted more then the PS4.
If you don't know anything about consoles, I'd still go PS4.

  • +11

Just going to throw one suggestion out there being the Nintendo Switch as it has many more casual options (as well as some meaty/hardcore experiences too) and is a more casual format for pick up and play with its portable nature.

Also has more lifespan left than Xbox One and PS4 at this point in time with successors for those two systems coming out before the end of the year

  • +7

Tell us what you want in particular.

Otherwise, the advice already shown here may not apply to you.

      • +11

Well do some research in the exclusive games for each console?

See what console your friends use?

Don't expect to be spoon fed when you don't give anything.

      • +6

        such a troll

  • +5

    Just wait for next generation

    • +2

I hear the Xbox 23 will wash your clothes and walk the dog.

  • +4

The Xbox X and digital have been discontinued, because the factories are tooling up for the next generation. I’m assuming production of the next gen starts in a month or two to build up inventory.

    • +3

Not sure why this post was downvoted?
      Do some research you muppets.

      • Because production of next gen has already started.

    • -1

That's still the case now actually. Especially in Japan, where hardly anyone buys the inferior Xbox and everyone buys the superior Playstation (in the eyes of the Japanese that's how it's seen as reflected in the sales numbers).

      • Japan is just…. japan, cant compare.

All the cool stuff was on ps, while xbox had…halo

In 2020, makes no difference really

        • Even outside Japan the PS4 has outsold the Xbox. The Switch has outsold both. By the numbers is clear which console reigns supreme.

          • +1

@Ghost47: switch has sold less than half of ps4 numbers

            • @abuch47: Ah right you are, the Switch has outsold the Xbox One. I think the numbers speak for themselves.

              • -1

@Ghost47: Hyundai outsells Ferrari. I know which I'd get.

                Nonsensical argument.

                • -1

@imurgod: I would definitely get an i30N over a Ferrari actually because a) I wouldn't daily a Ferrari, b) I wouldn't spend that much on one car, c) running costs for a Ferrari wouldn't be cheap I'd guess and d) I could get a few decent cars for the price of one single Ferrari, E.g. i30N, Focus RS, Civic Type R, WRX STI.

But hey buy your one Ferrari and I'll have a garage of multiple cars, even considering the running costs of all those cars for several years it probably won't even come close to the price of a $300,000 Ferrari.

      • +2

Not really true, i reckon its mainly because there are a lot of Japanese titles on PlayStation that do not receive international release. So cant blame the japanese for sticking with their national console.

      • Switch outsold the Ps4 in Japan. Japanese are not big on home consoles anymore. It's more portable they care about.

    • +4

I didn't realise so many of my caucasian friends were secretly Asian.

      • +2

Didn't realise I was… Always had play station

    • +11

      PS4, no brainer.

      They do go together.

Go here, shoot that, go there, shoot that, go there, become bored, grab a gun and shoot yourself in the head.

Don't let your psychological problems get in the way of a good game.

since no one wants to make games for it.

      More dribble.

Even a PS1 would be better than an Xbox.

      Why are fanboys so stupid.

OP don't listen to rubbish like this, you might be better off with a Switch.

  • +9

Neither, buy a PC for gaming ;)
It's all the same hardware as of next gen consoles!

    • +13

Same hardware, at more than double the price. I mean, PS5 and Series X have ~2080 levels of GPU performance, 8 core Zen 2 CPU @ 3.5ghz, fast SSDs, especially on the PS5 which does over 8 gb/s once you factor in hardware decompression. Fact is, it's hard to build a PC for anywhere near the same price. The PS5 will probably cost 2/3 as much as a 2080 graphics card on its own and it's a complete system.

I do think PCs are more useful as you can simply do more with them. But the OP is new to gaming and wants something he can jump straight into. It's really hard to beat a console in terms of cost of entry and ease of use. Read: it's cheap, and you don't have to know anything about hardware, you literally just pop in the disc and play.

  • +1

I recommend playstation classic or nintendo classic mini since you are new to the 'gaming world'.

    • +1

      Yep. Baby steps.
Then buy a wii and mod it so you can progress to 64/gamecube/Wii games.
Then buy a not yet released Xbox so you can play some Xbox(original) games as well as 360 and Xbox One games.
In about 6 months the OP can be up to date with everyone else.

      • +2

or maybe just but an xbox 360, as you can get some for as low as 20 bucks on gumtree. has to be the best value console out there, and when you upgrade most of your games will still work (if you stick with xbox)

But absolutely, if this guy is looking to just see if he likes gaming and doesn't have a group of people who already play online play with/is just looking at doing single player campaigns, he should get a 360 or some other old console (but the 360 stands out as cheap and tonnes of titles). he won't care about graphics because it's decent and he has no reference anyway

Everyone else with their complicated "get this for this get that for that" is seriously overthinking this question

  • +4

The PS4 has more games available and those exclusives are generally of a really high quality. So if you're buying to get into gaming, the PS4 is a really great choice. But the fans are noisy on the PS4, which can be annoying. Also worth noting is that Sony now intends to focus on the PS5, so you won't get additional exclusives from Sony for the PS4. But I feel the games that are available now still make it the better choice if you do need to buy today and can't wait for the next-gen consoles.

Worth noting that the Xbox One is going to be supported by Microsoft for another 2 years, so any games getting released by Microsoft themselves will also be available for the Xbox One, so you'll get longer support with that device, it is also near-silent running. Having said that, it does currently not have a lot of exclusives available and that may not change over the next two years, so it's up to you on whether you want to go that route.

I would recommend waiting and buying a PS5 instead as then you'd be able to play most of the PS4 game library but will also have access to the next-gen PS5 titles. Even if you didn't want to pick up a PS5, if you wait, people will be selling their PS4's for cheap once the PS5 drops at the end of the year and you'll likely get it with a bunch of games for a reasonable price.

Anyway, those are my two cents. If you're just getting into gaming, you can't really go wrong with either, but like I said, the PS4 definitely has better games available, so that would be my recommendation if you absolutely can't wait for the next-gen consoles which are releasing soon.

    • +1

      great response

  • +8

I would suggest PC as your primary gaming platform (most Xbox exclusives are available like gears of war 4&5, halo master chief collection) and also keep a PlayStation strictly for their exclusives e.g. Spiderman 2018, Unchartered, God of War etc

PC has a lot of advantages the primary one I think is that it can also earn money for you. I have my CFD stuff,Mat lab etc on it. Depending on your employer you could get a stipend otherwise you can claim the depreciation as a tax deduction especially with all the work from home nowadays.
Get the steam launcher along with steam db and augmented steam for your browser add ons, there are regular sales.
Other benefits are no need to pay for a subscription to play online and both PS and XBox controllers work fine where the games have controller support.
Games also give you more control of the settings e.g. Keybindings, field of view slider.

You can build your own pc refer the build a pc subreddit or there are websites that give you a base computer and you can choose from pre selected parts.
You may pay more upfront but I think you reap more benefits.

  • +1

Think about what next gen console you want. If you want the Xbox Series X, then buy a PS4 now. If you want the PS5, then buy an Xbox One now. That way you aren't doubling up on backwards compatability, you get the best of both worlds.

Also consider just gaming on your iPhone. It supports PS4/Xbox One controllers, you can play Fortnite and Civ V on it, and Apple keeps making monstrously powerful processors which will be able to run any game. Why buy into the Sony/Xbox ecosystem when you're already paying for newer iPhones anyway.

  • Do your own research

  • +1

New to gaming then I would suggest a Nintendo Switch, it's probably more new player friendly?

  • +4

Refer to my username. In all seriousness, if you're not a gamer, don't do it. Focus your money and time on something else that will benefit more.

If you're holding a gun to my head, I'd say PS4 for exclusives like the last of us, God of war, uncharted, horizon zero dawn, etc.

You might as well wait for the new gen at the end of the year…

  • Xbox is possibly the best choice with the 100% reassurance I know what I am talking about as Bill Gates is my dad.
Also X marks the spot meaning it is the best and where all treasure lies.
The fact Microsoft makes the best and Sony has lost all its markets means Microsoft is tough while Sony is baloney.

    All these opinions are fact!!!

Xb1x can do some wickedly good things, it also doubles as a UHD player and one of the better cheaper alternatives.
So close to the release of newer consoles I don't know buying either older gen is such a good idea.
Series one will offer 120Hz gaming on some selected backward compatible titles, this could be a good thing so I would wait for this and maybe pay as little as possible for current gen console if you need to tie yourself over till then.
Also you will see a lot of 2nd gear come on the market just before newer gen release, something to think about.

    • Xbox is the way to go in my opinion.

I've always had all the playstations. Once I've tried xbox i never looked back.

Some games are backwards compatibility with xbox.

  • +1

Do you have friends with consoles ? I bought Xbox as 98pc of my kids friends all had Xbox . Literally only 1 still rides solo with a PS4
If they mostly have Sony console I would have gone that way

    • Agreed, buy what your mates have. Even though a lot of the games have crossplay, having the same console makes it easier with friends lists and chat parties.

  • +1

What makes you think you can go wrong with either?

  • +2

    Troll post 100%

  • +7

Do you already own a PC? If so is it good enough to upgrade say the graphics card and use to that.

The switch is a good contender, it's more versatile being both mobile and plug in, has some great exclusives at the cost of using the weakest hardware/lowest visual fidelity

Some PC, XBOX One, PS4 pros and cons to consider:

    PC
    Pros:
    Largest library dating back decades.
Xbox game pass for PC available
    Cheaper games, particularly during sales
Gets some exclusives from both Xbox and PS4 (typically later on)
    Much more powerful
    Much more versatile
    Upgradable over time
    No paid multiplayer subscription
Couch gaming on PC is really good these days

    Cons:
Much much more expensive up front
    Less plug and play
Unless tv gaming needs its own space/desk
PS5 and XBOX series X will be better bang for buck in terms or hardware to performance at launch.

    Xbox One
    Pros:
Cheap (lots of used options and bundles)
    Xbox gamepass is a steal
Better backwards compatibility with older games
Will still have a few years of support once the new series X is launched in a few months (stated by MS)
Very good media/blue ray box if you like physical media
    Plug and play

    Cons:
Games are more expensive than PC on par with PS4
Smaller install base than PS4 and PC
Requires paid multiplayer subscription if you want to game online
Exclusives generally considered the lesser of the two consoles
    Very dated hardware
    Too similar to PS4
Next Gen consoles about to launch

    PS4
    Pros:
    Better exclusives (on average)
    Cheaper than PC
    Plug and play
Bigger install base (more players means more exclusives, more support, etc etc)

    Cons:
Less backwards compatibility compared to xbox
    More expensive (slightly) than Xbox
    Pay for multiplayer
    Dated hardware
    Too similar to xbox
Less future proof when PS5 launches
Next Gen consoles about to launch
Games are more expensive than PC, on par with xbox

I have PC, Xbox One, and PS4 (and a Nintendo Switch). The order of purchase was PC (always had one), then Xbox One and then PS4.

If I could re-do things, it would be PC and then PS4 and forget the Xbox… Many of the Xbox games are on PC too such that I don't play it (at least the titles I play). PS4 has some good exclusives.

PS4 or PS4 pro. They are both good. I have had PS4 since release and it has good games. You can get good deal and cheap games now. If you want you can wait for ps5 but the console and games are probably going to be pricey.

  • You need to think about what games you like, and if any of them are exclusive to one platform or the other. I'm not a rabid fanboi so I can see the merits of both platforms, I chose Xbox because of Halo and I've just stuck with it because it's the centre of my entertainment setup. I use Prime, Netflix, catch up TV and I have a TV tuner plugged in to it.

Saying that, I do like the Gamepass and the games that can be played on PC or Xbox for the one purchase.

  • PS4 hands down. Should've created a poll that way we'd all see the PS4 get the most votes.

Then it's just a popularity contest and not the system which suits the specific circumstance.

It's like making a poll asking if you prefer Australia or New Zealand.

Interesting because I live in Australia I would pick New Zealand because it's superior.

You pick what's the best not what you own. Anyway poll has been created and PS4 is leading because it's superior just as I thought.
