ALDI “High Tech Digital Kitchen Thermometer” Crofton AT1512

I wasn't planning on writing a review so didn't take pics but there is currently little info available on this thermometer so thought I would make a few notes just in case anyone is interested.

The Crofton AT1512 is a touchscreen wired probe style thermometer that costs $10 and looks very similar to the Pro Smoke touchscreen thermometer available from Barbecues Galore.

It has a backlit touchscreen, a 1m woven steel wire and a number of preset meats/temps for Beef, Veal, Lamb, Pork, “Hamb” (it's actually spelt that way on the thermometer, perhaps ham bone or not?), Chicken, Turkey and Fish. Each temp setting is user adjustable but it seemed to reset to the default temps if the mode button was accidentally touched while in use.

Pros -

  • Cost $9.99
  • Uses and includes AAA batteries
  • Touchscreen is reasonably responsive
  • Aldi has a good return policy

Cons -

  • Not suitable for closed-door oven use (according to multiple warnings)
  • Averages 20 seconds to measure boiling water
  • Magnets are weak, fall off the fridge weak
  • The LCD viewing angle is very limited
  • Backlight turns off too quickly
  • Hamb…

I wasn't happy with the performance of the unit I purchased therefore I returned it. It's possible any issues I had were just with that particular one but I opted for a refund.
I would like something a little more advanced and will look into getting an Inkbird in a few weeks.

  • I picked up one of these hoping to use it in my smoker. Obviously can't due to no closed door use. Quality feels bad. Not happy with it but couldn't be bothered going in for a refund.

  • what's wrong with closed oven use? of course no one put the main unit inside oven, don't think any thermometer can withstand that temperature. I used for closed oven yesterday, worked fine, seems nothing wrong.

In terms of accuracy the reading is a bout 2 degree lower than my inkbird one. For $10 you can't complain too much. The problem with this and the inkbird are the lack of strap to hold the main unit in place so they're prone to fall off somewhere when you're too busy with the probe stucking in the meat. Aldi sold a non touch version last year that has the strap but unfortunately mine died after only a few month. Hopefully this one last longer

    • It says on the cable and in the book that it's not suitable for closed-door use and that the oven door should be left open. I'm guessing they just don't want people trying to return it after 6 or so months with a broken cable.

      • +1

my oven door doesn't close flushed and it has rubber insulation around edge so there's more chance the cable will be broken by accidentally closing it on the weber. I'll take the risk and report back in 6 months.

  • I also bought this and can concur with the review. The unit looks to be of really bad quality. Reading the LCD is a pain. Was hoping that I could simply stick it into my oil during deep-frying but it only seems to support preset temperatures for beef/chicken/hamb/etc and will beep when the optimal temperature for said proteins has been reached.

And yeah, the magnets are so weak that it slides down the fridge door with any door movement.

If you hold down the M button for a couple of seconds you can manually adjust the temp higher by pressing M again or pressing the middle button for lower temps. However bumping the M button after a few mins on the one I had cancelled the new temp so you need to be careful. There might be a way to lock it however with the other issue I didn’t bother wasting any extra time on it.

      • Ah thanks for that. Again, same here.. I couldn't stand the other shortcomings so I ordered another thermometer yesterday.
