Penfolds in general are overpriced compared to other brands (even within Treasury Estates). Cullen's Diana Madeleine is much nicer Cab Sav in my opinion, and less than half the price.

    • Any recommendations for Shiraz

      • At what price point?

I always recommend trying out a different wineries, given how subjective wine is. Also, look for discounts at Coles etc for smaller brands, preferably originally priced around $50. Part of the fun is exploring new wines and making your own judgements!

If you're looking to drop some money on Shiraz, I'd take a look at the Vasse Felix Tom Cullity. The Rockford Basket Press is always a winner too. Then onto Giaconda, Torbreck, Standish (2018 was a great year for them) and Yarra Yering to start, you can get crazily good wine for $100.

We're spoiled for choice in Australia with the Barossa, Yarra and Margaret River though. Wines outside of these regions can be great value too (I was buying tonnes of Giacondas Warner that was meant to be for export for less than $50 a bottle early in lockdown, sadly all gone). But Tintara and Mr Riggs from McLaren Vale are good drops for the price at around $50. Clonakilla are making amazing stuff out of Canberra. Best's are always good, so is Brokenwood from Hunter.

None of this is particularly expert advice though, just listing off well known brands that I've drank and liked that are well known for a reason, they're really good. I also just have friends that are sommeliers that love Beechworth (thus calling out Giaconda, and we drink tonnes of Savaterre together). Whenever stuff opens up again it's worth doing some wine tastings at a Dan Murphy's and hit up a few events.

Hard part is picking your style and learning what needs a decant (although young Australian shiraz is pretty much everything), if you want something a little more elegant then can go with the Geelong region or Mornington, better for pinot but make good shiraz too.

      • I recently had a 2008 McNicol from Mitchell Wines (it was the current release last year) - $50. A little hard to find - it isn't stocked at Dan's - but if you search around, it's worth the hunt.

And the Diana is Langton's classified exceptional too, where the bin isn't

    • Penfolds is popular because it has cache and long history of quality. Taste is very subjective even amongst critics. Why put down the brand? If the deal is a deal, let people decide themselves if they want to buy it.

    • Have you tried the 169 in 2020?

At this price it is very tempting, but I'm saving my fancy wine budget for a case of 2015 Penfolds Grange.

    • Not sure if you're joking. Have you had Grange before? Really diminished returns at that inflated price point, and a case to boot.. could get you a tonne of very decent stuff

  • Bought three cases for Christmas punch.

Is that punch coming from the wife for buying 3 cases?
