I think the writer abstracted the idea of butt, aka rear end, aka rim. A rim has a circumference as it goes around. I think it is a clever metaphor for approximation which can also be extrapolated to mean a summary of. I sumise that this can only mean the writer wants you to read the summary of his problem to the end.

We all know paper grows on trees but trees are disappearing at a rapid rate. It is a vanishing commodity, one which the writer cannot get a hold of.
