Thoughts on Whether It Is Worth Waiting for Samsung 980 EVO Plus?

I am thinking about buying the Samsung 970 EVO Plus for a new PC build, as they've come down in price a bit. But I understand that the 980 series is being released soon? Is it worth waiting? I definitely won't buy the PRO model because I'm on a budget. But apparently the EVO Plus is due to come out shortly afterward?

You know the 980 plus is gonna cost an arm and a leg, so I don't think so.

Budget is not a word i'd expect to see when your talking about something like this so im going to say no since your on a budget.

We've reached the point of diminishing returns on NAND flash storage in consumer use for ages now. If you're just using an SSD as a general boot drive where you store applications, games and other general things, it literally doesn't matter. The 970 EVO Plus is far, far faster than 99% of users would ever need.

If you're not building yet, then yeah, I'd just wait and see because why not. But if you're building now, I wouldn't delay just for the sake of the 980 SSDs.

    • I agree. The only thing stopping you from going faster is your own belief you should have spent top dollar.

  • Not worth it, will take a couple of years for prices to come down.

  • Thanks everybody. I am going to stick with the 970.

I didn’t even get the 970 due to diminishing returns, got a cheap A2000 instead.

  • Its a bragging WRITE thing (Pun intended). Your motherboard must have support for PCI-e 4 to support the 980 Pros full potential. If you have a board with Pci-e 3, You will get equivalent R/W speeds as the 970 Evo Plus.

    • I do have a new MSI x570 Tomahawk motherboard but still, I think I will stick with the 970 EVO Plus due to cost and what people have said about the additional speed being unnecessary.

Nice! My current Windows Drive is the intel 660P 2TB. I got to admit it is SUPER fast, no complaints. The 970 Evo Plus KILLS my Nvme in speed tests. So just know, you definitely have nothing to worry about.

But OP if you do decide to go with the 970, please act quick and make sure you purchase it by 31st July to claim your cash back from Samsung.

      • The additional speed might make a difference in the next crop of games with level loading etc. now that the consoles are going to have super fast SSDs.
I'm waiting on the 980 Pro, but that is for the write speeds for a particular project, so I hope they are out soon.

  • if you have to ask you don't need it
