  • Is this the 2020 model?

    • 2019 model most shops no longer have this model

  • Are TCL panels actually any good?

I've heard TCL supplies the Australian market with inferior panels compared to the US and EU models.

    • Probably $ubpar Samsung panels?

    • Apparently they've come a decent way, but tcl for me in the past have been a nightmare for connected devices and video lag.
      I wouldn't touch them.

    • +1

I've got one of their older top tier 65X4US and it's brilliant ($2k ish). A few software niggles but the panel itself has been brilliant. I then bought a cheapie 43" for upstairs (it was $300 odd) and it is surprisingly good for the price, slugging hardware which is to be expected, but the panel is good. I'm holding out for the new TCL mini-LED's now.

  • Was looking for a 4k tv for the bedroom, would this be good enough for a ps4?

    • I'm on mine right now. struggles with the pro on 4k output

      • Do you mean input lag?

        • +1

I mean screen will black out . Flicks on and off sporadically whilst playing 4k cod.

          • @sasangeleus: Thanks, I will pass this one then

          • +1

@sasangeleus: Do you have the 55P8M TV? I'm also playing COD on it but haven't experienced any black out or flickering… That sucks!

    8k or not, I still couldn't pay $3k for a TLC.

  • +2

At least when 4k came out there were 4k blu rays on the horizon, there is ZERO 8k content.

    • Doesn't "on the horizon" mean not out yet, like zero content?

      • Coming soon I believe.

        • I believe "coming soon" is the same as indefinite which is the same as "not out yet".

  • +2

I have the 50" version of this as a bedroom TV. The backlight doesn't seem to turn off fully when the tv is switched off. There's a light grey tinge to it when in a dark room. It doesn't bother me but in case toure really sensitive to it I would give this model a miss.

Based on the comments I guess I'll keep my $400 4K Polaroid TV I bought 3 years ago.

  • Can anyone suggest how to side load android app on this TV?

    • Xiaomi Mi Box S?

    • Really wanna install an app on the TV for the convinence in instead of using external box, but thanks for the suggestion.

    • This TV comes with Android TV and Android apps.

  • +3

This is a good price for an 8k model. Bit pointless as there’s not a lot of 8k content.

I think spending the money on an OLED or better quality 4K panel makes more sense.

    • I agree. You're definitely paying a premium for a feature that isn't relevant right now, and when it does become relevant, the tech will improve and be less expensive.

My experience with TCL has been great and I think it's the best bang for your buck (most of the time). Unfortunately, we didn't get the R series like the US did a couple of years ago, and those set a new benchmark for 4k price/performance.

    • It's only max 450 nits, that's terrible for a $3k TV!

The Sony X9500H, which is the same price, has brightness >1000 nits.
Real actual HDR, which I would take over 8K rubbish any day.

      • yeh true, or wait for a q8 65" deal for around $1500, its not far away

  • I just want to know how close people are sitting to their 65 inch screens to realistically make use of their 8k resolution…

    • About as close as you would to a computer monitor. You are looking at the pixel density of a 16" 1080p monitor, or a 4K 32" monitor. Good luck trying to pick up the pixels from 10 feet or however far away your favourite couch or chair is. I think the 4K OLED makes a lot more sense.

  • 55" is now out of stock. I was close to buying. Can anyone recommend a decent, similarly priced 55" 4K TV?

    • +1

      Just said 3 available now.

      • Thanks, I must have missed them again. I've set it to watch so hopefully they keep adding them.

  • I have the kogan, hisense and recently TCL.

Best picture out of the 3 is hisense.

Kogan just a piece of crap both picture and app, picture is ok and app is slow.

Hisense, only complaint is the plex app, always transcoding.

TCL is best on both area, picture is good and app also responsive and plex direct play work perfect. It also show HDR10 notification when 4k hdr content detected.

TCL would be best for bedroom with a sound bar.

    • Except there are different models between those makes. There are TCLs that would wipe the floor with Hisense and vice versa … Kogan, unfortunately, keeps churning out crap

  • +1

I have the 55" TCL for which I paid a bit more than this and find it to be very good value for money. However it struggled with high res content from a HTPC and an Nvidia Shield. A premium certified HDMI cable sorted this out.

    Recommended.

  • TCL have come a long way in the past few years. I have a 4k HDR Android model from a few years ago and I love it. It has 400 clear motion rate (200Hz native refresh rate) which still out does most of the more recent models. The Quantom Dot tech with HDR looks amazing.
