Thank you OP. This is much a better deal than costco where it is currently available for $1299.

I am also after this under $1000 or barista express under $600. So please let me know if you see a deal like that.

    • will do mate..

      • I'm also looking. Will let you guys know too.

  • Just found this model selling for $1195 at thegoodguys commercial site.

Barista express from factory seconds cost me $399. Was quite a few eBay deals around the $500 over Jan and Feb.

    • +1

Where can you purchase factory seconds?

      • +1

Gotta do some googling mate. I found a Breville factory second store very close to me

        • In Victoria? I thought they have all closed down.

  • +3

Surely you're just paying extra for the gimmicky lcd screen and presents here? The double shot and auto steam buttons on my Bambino Plus are all I need.

    • +1

I have the bambino and love it for its simplicity and quality output. Saying that, from my research prior to buying, this machine does a good job for those who have zero interest in learning anything coffee related and just want it to pump out a good quality coffee based on which style they want at that particular time.

I did buy a couple of things which have made the bambino even better if you haven’t already - a non pressurised basket and distributor / palm tamp really improves my quality consistency

      • I think you right to a certain point but you still have to learn about tamping and dial in the grind (although maybe not as much with a pressurised basket). What difference has the non-pressurised basket made?

I also have the distributor and it's amazing. I've got the palm tamp on order 😁

        • So much less mess and waste with dist and tamp.

I went from Nespresso so the initial jump in quality was huge. When I first got non-pressurised basket I didn’t notice too much but once I started using exactly 18g, and the dist / tamp I got to take advantage of it. I took the machine on holiday and since I left grinder at home and using pre ground coffee (same beans as usually use) I went with pressurised on the presumption it will be safer to get consistency but the coffee is noticeably not as good

          • @Wombatstew: I'm fairly new to home coffee and have the Bambino Plus + Smart Grinder Pro as well. What dist and tamp would you recommend? Am I able to get 18g exactly from my grinder? How big of a difference does the pressurised/non-pressurised basket make?

Also, how do I get the machine to stay put when I attach/remove the basket? Cheers

        • I'm also an upgrader from Nespresso Lattisima One to Bambino + Smart Grinder

Coffee is better, milk frothing (which wasn't bad in the Latissima One) is better.

I'm using the double cup presurised basket for now, Aldi medium roast at grind setting of 15 and 17 seconds of grind time ~ 17g of coffee.

I'll probably upgrade to the non-presurrise basket once my Matow Distributor and Tamp from Amazon gets delivered.

Also bought a dosing funnel (which has arrived) which was a great buy! No more coffee grinds dropping out of the basket/portafilter!

  • I got the barista touch black truffle from hn $950 they matched Costco price

    • but Costco is at $1299 ? how did they do $950 for you ?

      • Was a previous special… hopefully there's a sale again soon

      • Was 950 instore $1299 online

        • in the Costco store ? in Victoria ? when ?

          • @gadgetseeker: Costco in vic was a catalogue special about 5 weeks ago
Hn sell the black truffle $1499 I got them to Mach Costco so I could get the $150 redemption

  • Dual boiler?

    • +1

      don't think so

    • No not a dual boiler but really don't need it. To warm the water it takes around 3seconds. Its super impressive. I bought this about 5 months ago and it's really really good.

      • Barista Express takes ~15-20s to warm up, after that it's quicker to change steam-hot water or extraction.

Is this the only Express' disadvantage compared to Touch? Or can Touch eg. steam milk on its own?

        • +1

I think has an auto steamer for milk so you don't need to worry about getting that right.

        • +1

You can set the touch to steam to milk according to a certain temp. So if you want your milk to be 50 degrees it stops at 50. You can also set the frothiness and it will auto that as well. You can still do a manual froth as well if you want super extra froth or what ever reason you might have.

        • +1

Keep in mind, your really want to leave the metal to warm up for about a minute before use anyway, the basket takes a while to heat up no matter which machine you get

  • I got this for $999 a few months back and its worth every cent. I'm a big coffee drinker and saving loads of cash by doing my own and its a very consistent taste.

  • following! looking for the Barista Express as well! someone pls find a good deal :/

You can thank Italians for all this coffee culture

Now all you need do is be like them and use what they use every morning:

    https://thisismold.com/object/tool/the-history-of-the-moka-d…

Simple, quick, cheap, and easy, Bialetti for the win!

    • +2

      Does it make espresso?

    • +1 for you.
      Can't beat this one!
Do you use it with a coffee grinder?

      • -2

Indeed, its the proper full monty experience

You can buy the roasted beans and grind it yourself [mix and match even] or buy it already ground in a "brick", refer:

        https://shop.coles.com.au/a/richmond-south/everything/search…

You are better off going to a proper coffee importer, they have miles more choices and better deals, some will even brew you up a cup, try-b4u-buy

If you want to go MAXIMUM Italy, buy Italian roasted coffee-beans, AND [wait for it] imported Italian water [non sparkling] and that is 99.94% same as Italy

So much tweaking to be done, amount of coffee, how hard you press it down, how much heat, how long you let it boil, ALL in the name of making your perfect cup!

ENJOY, not expensive and great fun, and u get to drink it all :-)

        • +1

I can't take anyone seriously who suggests buying pre-ground beans.

        • FYI, Italians order espresso…. lol. And no one who likes coffee buys grounds. And serious, Vittoria…..good coffee….. ouch

  • +1

    Just an FYI

This machine rated 73% in the latest Choice test.

    74% - Bambino
    77% - Barista Pro BES878
    79% - Infuser BES840
    81% - Pro 920
    82% - Barista Express BES870 RRP $950

    • Why is it rated so much lower than the base model, must be related to value.

      • +1

Pretty consistently Bambino rates high for taste for anything circa 1k and under and it's got a great steamer that is easy to use.

        https://www.techgearlab.com/reviews/kitchen/espresso-machine…

        I prefer my grinder seperate

        • It's the same as the express etc, just only a single unit. I value bench space, and the grinder is actually pretty good on the express. I got the express for $399 so really can't complain haha. I was going to get the bambino and a grinder, but then have two power points, two machines, two things to clean, and more expensive.

          • @onlinepred: The Bambino has the auto frother.

            • @C0mbat: Yes, bought the Mahal for a reason haha, otherwise just buy full auto

  • +1

@Willyroo - I had the Barista Express and its nice but I wanted semi auto for when I don't want to stand and froth the milk myself.. I would recommend the Touch above the express.

@Stickmoo - I almost bought the La Specialista and the biggest reason is the tamping. I like how they do it and a lot less of a mess. I went with the Breville because reviews say the frothing is better and the water boiler is almost instant on the Breville. I'm not sure if you can do manual frothing with the La Specialista..

    • Did you get the barista touch or the oracle touch?

    • +1

Ended up getting the Bambino Plus for $326.
Simple and less stuff to go wrong with it. If the grinder has issues I don't have to take the whole unit out of service.

I'll spend the rest on a good grinder

      • Where did you buy the Bambino Plus for $326 ? I didn't realise it has a automatic milk frother … that's really reasonable price for a machine like that.

        • TGG commercial had it at that price. If you can get a hold of a 30 day quote I'm pretty sure they'll still honour it.

Otherwise it's still only $353 and plenty in stock in stores now. So still a really good price

          • @stickymoo: Unfortunately I don't have their commercial membership so not sure how I could get that price

  • Barista Touch… Oracle is double the price. Would have liked it but that's a lot of cash that I couldn't justify just yet…

    • Yeah. I’m having the same dilemma at the moment trying to choose. So your happy with the barista touch? How long does it take to warm up from off to ready to make coffee.

      • Yea very happy with it. I use it at least 5 times a day. The auto frother is nice especially when making multiple cups. Then the super nice part is the auto purge after each cup.

To warm it up it takes a few sec. And when frothing after you did the shot of expresso its instant. There is really no time you spend in waiting on the machine.

I turn it on, grind the beans and tamp it. Then i put it in llace and by this time its at least 30sec that passed so then its already warm and ready

  • Just bought this from The Good Guys for $1,079, in case you feel like haggling it down

    • That a good deal. I’m struggling to find anyone with stock. Do you have a receipt?

  • I got mine for 1199 a few months back.. seems they go to this price often..

    • I ended up picking one up today. Going to set it up in the morning and have a go at dialing it in. Wish me luck.
