Can I do "everything" on Mobile Data alone (& Save $$ by rely'g on CIRCLES.LIFE's 100GB Quota), ie, W/O co$tly -unlimited- NBN?

'Too busy to "need" Unlimited NBN…

So, to save $69/mon on Internet access, I'm considering dumping my "unlimited" NBN50 a/c, in favor of my "back-up" $38/mon Circles.Life (w/ 100gb/mon quota).

B4 I take that leap…

Is there anything I can ONLY do on NBN, ie, that I -wouldn't- be able to do on (Optus, if it matters) Mobile Data?

Thanks

PS Are there any cheap ($$ per-mon) NBN plans, w/ NBN50 speed, but w/ ~100GB / month Quota (eg, "Summer Cottage" plans, for those who want cheap -OR- part-of-year (OR even part of month OR pay-by-day) Internet service, w/ NBN50 speed, but cost closer to Circles.Life's?

Or… Are there any "Seniors plans" out there?

  • i think NBN is pretty exxy.
I don't think there is any real reason to stick with NBN (unless you need a land line ?)
If you only using 100gb/mth and need NBN 50 speeds not going to be cheap.
Even 12mbps plans with 100gb/mth are not gonna be cheaper than $30/mth.

Just comes down to data usage/month
    $38/mth is cheap

The main thing with mobile data is that you just need to make sure you get good mobile reception where you plan to use it!

    • Good reception AND Low cell-tower usage, by others, ie, when I need speed, maybe. ;~)

But… are there any Functional restrictions / limits with having -ONLY- Mobile Data?

      • Nah.
Did it for 12 months. (Switched from 1 prepaid sim to another)

Prior to my data usage going up due to the work from home situation, I had completely left nbn and was using Optus 4G has my internet.

The only issue I ever had was due to issues being on a CGNAT IP, which meant I didn't have a IP address for remote access.

I was also getting speeds of 230Mbps down and 53Mbps up, which is way faster than nbn.

    • There used to be services for folk with Dynamically-Assigned IP addr's (in the ADSL-era).

      Some were Free to use…

      Would that solve it, today?

      • +2

Nope, the IP address is not a dynamically assigned IP.

CGNAT IP is when a person shares the same IP with hundreds of others, whereas dynamic IPs are assigned to one person at a time.

Nope carrier grade NAT is done by the provider.

You could test things for one month before cancelling NBN?

    • +1

      Ditto.
I reconnected NBN for my work from home period.
On a heavily discounted Superloop plan, I was only paying $50/month and cancelled it once we returned to the office.
Will claim 100% tax deduction on the costs as it was 100% work related expense.
Our household has been on 200Gb plan with Optus 4G for 18 months now. No regrets we only use about 150Gb/month anyway.
It's cheaper and faster than our shitty FttN NBN could ever be.
Looking forward to completing this contract and upgrading to the B818 modem (or hopefully even 5G) for even faster speeds.

The one downside that I can think of is that you're behind CG-NAT so you can't run a server from home.
But many/most NBN ISPs also run CG-NAT by default.

      • Web, FTP, or both…?

        • Any server that you hope to be accessible reliably from the open internet.

$69 unlimited data is the minimum cost for NBN50 without any discounts for 6 months and 100GB of data costs more than some unlimited plans.

Launtel charge by the day on the NBN. Pause or change your plan at anytime and is month to month no contract.

    • Yes, I've seen that…

MyRepublic used to let you change speed [Once per Month?], cost-free.

(Of course, you paid more for higher-speed periods / months…)

      • Launtel charge $2.08/day NBN50.

Seniors plans on the NBN are not what your after. The speeds are NBN12 and NBN25.

I've tried that in the past and the biggest issue is the choice of modem. I went with a Huawei mobile modem at first and the experience is shit. Changed over to a B525 and that improved the experience. Ended up back on NBN because WFH chewed up the 100GB fairly quickly.

I use 4G as my only internet without any issues. Netflix, gaming, browsing, it's all good. No need for NBN.

    And it's easier to
    read now that you
    don't type like this anymore.

Online gaming can be a problem with carrier grade NAT.

        We don't Game.

How well does VoIP (MyNetFone, Skype, Zello, Zoom, etc.) work?

        Or… HD YouTube, etc.?

        Any1…?

        • -1

          Works fine:
MyNetFone (I remember seeing some forum posts saying it didn't work for some people though)
          Skype
          Zoom
          HD YouTube
          etc.

          • @triviums: Don't know why I got down voted so I conducted multiple tests to see why I am wrong. I still don't know why I am wrong.

            Service Test 1 Test 2 Test 3
MyNetFone Called mobile number: working Called local number: working Called 1800/1300 number: working
Skype Conference call with 1 person: working Conference call with 8 people: working Conference call with 7 people: working

  • I've done the same. Cancelled NBN and signed up for the 100GB Circles. Life plan for $28 per month. So far it works very well.
