Probably not "CERTIFIED" or "PROPER" or "STERILE"

At least it avoids the $200 fine

    • +11

Yeah, not sure it'll avoid the medical bills for corona tho πŸ˜‚βœŒοΈπŸ™

But you have to understand what these masks do. They only partially protect you. Most of what they do is reduce the amount of droplets coming from your mouth and nose, and reduce the velocity of your breath.

Any infectious droplets are kept close to you and not into another person.

Masks protect other people from you, not you from other people. You are in effect saying "I am a responsible person; your health matters to me".

Only if we all wear them is everybody safe.

        • I know that much, been trying to preach it around here for a while. Reasons I said it probably won't.
I'm sure there's some element of protection to it, even if miniature.
Reducing airflow restricting airflow from certain directions and also not particularly letting every drop thrown at you land on your tongue.

          Still, doesn't beat a good N99 \ FFP3 mask πŸ™

Yes there is. It reduces the incidence of infection (but not to zero), and also the severity (because of reduced viral load.

N95? But yes, completely agree. But that's for a completely different threat level and not warranted for casual use. Those things are scarce enough in Australia that we should save them for those who most need them - healthcare and emergency services workers, first.

Masks protect other people from you

So it's like "third party insurance" ???

        • -1

Since masks became mandatory the number of cases has increased. That means masks are helping spread the virus.

That was a joke, but I'm sure people will neg it!

          • @[Deactivated]: Don't think you can blame the masks, they are making a difference everywhere else in the world.

            • @mlakmlak: I said it was a joke

          • @[Deactivated]: See one neg.

      • Says they are "3 layer", that's all is recommended.

      • as in the gov money you get for getting corona?

Delivery: Estimated between Mon. 10 Aug. and Wed. 26 Aug. This is a strong range.

    • +1

I think some sellers just extend their estimate to avoid any backlash due to delays.

If it's shipped locally like it says , I doubt it'll take a month 😳

      • I ordered mine a week ago (23/07) from the same ebay seller and still no update from tracking given. Doesn't seem to be local stock. I live in Sydney so the shipping should have been quick.

I love the fake ISO9001 standard certificate on the advert, full of grammar and spelling errors! :P

  • Do these protect against kusu gas?

    • Maybe farts if you press it really tightly against your face 🀨

      • username checks out :P

        • haha

      • +1

Maybe farts if you press it really tightly against your face

There's a study that shows that while the gas from a fart makes it through two layers of cotton, the bacteria from a fart does not (as shown by growth on a petri dish culture medium).

        • well technically the underwear and pants already do that job , right? o0o

  • +1

Seems way too cheaper. Guessing it's either not really 3 layer or it's actually coming from China (hence the BS shipping estimate).

    • +1

If it didn't arrive from AUS just bully them into giving you half the money back and report them to eBay.

I too doubt the 3 ply, tho it can literally be 3 ply of anything , so like…toilet paper layers? Lol

      • I too doubt the 3 ply, tho it can literally be 3 ply of anything , so like…toilet paper layers? Lol

Not worth the effort. Would rather just support a legitimate seller.

      • Masks are really cheap in China, it can be sold oversea at less than 10 cents (exclude shipping cost) on alibaba but they are probably not BFE >98%.
Most people can't tell the difference between a 3-ply polypropylene and a 3-ply polypropylene certified BFE >98%.

Real melt blown polypropylene (the white layer in the middle) turn into a transparent liquid after you burn/melt it.

    Price increased to $24.20 now.

    • Yep - was $20 on the 26th according to the purchase history.

Saw someone buy 26 earlier on this morning!

    • Updated :( sosad

  • +3

Can see the local store buying 10 of these and then rebundling them into packs of 5 to sell for $10 each.

    • +2

Omg what a great idea. πŸ‘€πŸ‘€

I hope they're really fragile and bad and it ends up being the worst decision ever because their reputation is mutilated πŸ˜‚βœŒοΈ

    • +1

It's just an expression of a shipping method, not express. They're expressing it pretty clearly. 😎

    • If you have used Fastway couriers before you would know this estimate is not far off the mark for their version of 'express'.

Don’t ozbargain on your health 😷

    • Hey, why would you have an open heart surgery in a hospital, if your local junkie offers it for 95% off? that's just silly.

      • Because ozbargain? You don't really get this site do you :)

Y'know what even, i'll go further than that - you have no idea what's the quality of this - you didn't purchase it, just randomly spouting words.

Probably made in wuhan too so already infected. :( or made of paper

The ISO 9001 β€œcertificate” on their ebay description says the masks are β€˜daily masks (non-medical)’. Don’t cheap out on not getting a deadly virus.

    • Define a medical mask?

Like stated in a comment early on this thread, these masks aren't made to protect you - no version of this mask will protect you - if you want protection you're looking for a fitted respiratory mask with proper filtering.

      • Not 100% correct.

1)Masks should be able to protect you:
The reason masks are recommended is to protect others (in case you have covid-19). As to whether you will be protected depends on expsore to people with Covid-19.
In the community, most spread tends to occur from contact (i.e. spreading/picking up virus from surfaces).
But if you exposed to a lot of people with covid (i.e if community rates got really high like in the US or if you work in a hospital with covid patients) then this type of mask if proper should protect you

        2)There is a "standard" for medical masks/masks?
If you read recommendations for mask. 3 layer masks are recommended as this absorbs droplets and allows you to breathe the best. This works both ways stops droplets going into your respiratory system or getting out.

        • This mask is not a filtering mask, any variation of a non-fitted mask is not PPE AND will not protect you from the virus.
If what you said was true- why would we care about the PPE shortage? N95? N99? Irrelevant.
          What you're saying isn't true.

The virus doesn't survive very well on surfaces - most of the infections are airborne and droplets from people / enclosed spaces that doesn't have good air circulation.

This mask is "PROPER" in that case, 3 layers - it still won't protect you.

          Just stop

          • @The Milk Man: Read about droplet and airbone precautions…

            Read about reasons for handwashing…

          • @The Milk Man: That is completely incorrect.
Surgical masks are definitely appropriate for droplet as data scientist has stated.

            • @maverickjohn: What? Thats not what I said at all.

              • @The Milk Man: β€œ This mask is not a filtering mask, any variation of a non-fitted mask is not PPE AND will not protect you from the virus. ”

Surgical masks are PPE when it comes to droplets and since covid is droplet unless aerosolised it will protect you from the virus.
When a person with Covid is having an aersolising procedure such as nebuliser or is intubated or is on non invasive ventilation it becomes airborne and only then surgical masks are not sufficient. This is when you need a p2/n95.
However more importantly it’s always contact precautions so the most likely way to contract it is by direct contact with the environment or person with covid. Hence why handwashing/ alcohol hand rub is so essential.

    • +1

Do medical masks stop you from getting the virus?

      • +1

invest in a mouth-mask - have someone sneeze into your eyeball - VirusDefeatus

      • -1

        Yes..
that's why health care workers use them

        • No. They use N95 masks to stop getting sick themselves. Surgical masks are about not giving illnesses to patients.

  • FWIW just wanted to say 'go firetruck yourself' to the greedy sod/s who bought 26, 15 and 10 packs of them. Everyone else acted decently and you acted like complete douches.

    • par for course here these days….lot of profiteering going on
